Working here for a year and want to see a lot of rock, I have a week when i first get there in March, what would be the best place to go then to climb? Also, what are good climber's cars to sleep in and do lots of miles?

If you're in the Baltimore area, Rocks State Park is well worth a trip. Top rope or trad on very nice rock (an old indian ceremonial site). Lead Strawberry Jam and have a seat on top of one of the few freestanding pilars on the East Coast.

Cars? I love my Toyota RAV-4. I have the back seats out, and I can fit two mountain bikes inside with all the wheels on. It's kind of like a little college dorm inside. Great gas mileage too.

Thanks for that pixelguru, it all sounds good and there's lots of info on this site. We should be there and climbing in a month or so (We've got 4 new routes to try and finish off before we go including a 700 foot ring bolted arete that will be more exiting to bolt than to finally climb).
I suspect we'll doing a "lot" of driving to try and visit everywhere within cooee of DC.
As a rough guide what do you think the best areas within 4 hours of DC would be in March?

from DC in march go south
1hour- everything in the MD database definitely some cool local stuff
2 hours Old Rag Mtn of Shenedoah**, Harrisonburg VA crags, southern PA crags
3 hours Seneca***, Franklin**
4 hours Coopers Rock **, Gunks NY***
6 hours New River Gorge***

Don't overlook Great Falls VA, just outside the beltway. Routes are short and toproped, but it is close. Good for evenings and odd half days. Think of it as roped bouldering. I have been here several years and still enjoy a day in the Gorge regularly.

Thanks a lot, all the new stuff will be very inspiring. Placing gear willl freak me out at first (I haven't placed much for the last 20 years). Driving on the "correct" side of the road will freak me out.
Just how cold is it over there now and in a month? Should I think about snowboarding too?
How much should a reliable but non-flash car set me back

Hey there. Anybody in Md or nearby up for some climbing this weekend? Or able to tell me where's good for some bouldering, maybe some TR? I'll have a new climber with me, but he's a good belayer!

Hope to be touching down in early March still. More questions:-
When is it worth trying to get out climbing or is it just too cold still.
Found a Seneca Rocks guide at a gym in Melbourne, Australia for $5, looks good.
We will be working in Gaithersberg, should we live there (is it a dead zone) or try and live somewhere more interesting? Is it easy to find a good share house, with climbers perhaps.

Hey the place you are going to live it's ok. You will have Sugarloaf Mountain going north on I-270 Ther's good climbing there and if you go I-270 S you have Caderock/Great falls. :twisted: Plus a smal climbing gym in rock vlille. it's best to go outdores.
