Hey, I'm no doctor but I may have something similar to your ailment. I have broken, (and rebroken, and rebroken.......) my right index finger more times than I wish to remember. My middle knuckle is now a couple mm's bigger than any other knuckle... It has gotten bigger with age. I also have pain in it for time to time... I can only give you the same advice that I have been practicing.... Suck it up. It hurts for awhile. No drugs help me.... (Well maybe alcohol.) I hope I've helped.

is the size changing? (like is it bigger after climbing?) doest it have soft or hard feel? if it feels semi soft or soft most likely it would be a ganglion cyst.

My first, middle and ring fingers on both hands have HUGE, #10 stopper sized middle joints (makes thin cracks a little scary). I also cannot close either hand enough to tightly hold onto anything smaller in diameter than a pencil. The doc sez it's osteoarthritis. My wedding ring is the size of a hoola-hoop and rattles around on my finger after I get it over the knuckle. (My wife still pisses and moans about the difference in the amount of gold between our rings) The knuckles also get bigger when I'm climbing a lot and deflate a little (with increased mobility) after a couple of weeks of rest. My granddad had it, my dad has it and I'm not stopping climbing for it. I figure I can let my daughter open the stuck jars when I turn 50.

Try a google search for Haberdon's Node (could be off on the spelling) yes, a type of arthritus. I have one on each pinky. They grow and shrink; often they are quite painful and restrict full ROM. I can still pull down though.

Heberden's node is the correct swelling. This is if the swelling is on the end joint in the hand. It is called something else if it is the middle joint. Usually Heberden's nodes just stick out in one direction and is a bone spur caused by osteoarthritis. If the whole joint is swollen then it is probably something else. Use google.

On my middle and ring finers between the 2 joints i have a hard arch shaped lump.... a buddy has the same thing - I just figured it was from the excessive amount of climbing we've been doing.... I'm not worried... though I'd like to know if it is the effect of climbing 3-4 times a week consistently for almost 3 years?

It's probably Heberden's Node, a burn spur from osteoarthritis: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=20167
