Anyone got one of these ATC's with the v notches cut into them? I find that I have to lift my rope out of the v notch, or else it locks, (my rope's a 10.5 MM diameter), which at indoor walls earns me a slagging off by the staff for my belay technique (cos I have to lift my arm up to do it). . I've heard people say they are more suited to half ropes. Anyone find any similar problems, or got any advice on using them, cos at the moment I've gone back to my Black Diamond ATC, but I'd like to use my simond properly

Thanks I have been advised to rotate it so I can use the side without the V notches, but obviously if there is anyway I could use the side with the V notches I would prefer to.

I had the cubik but lost it, however I never had the problem you're describing and even tho I have a 10mm rope. it does hold the rope more in high friction mode than the new ATC-XP but certainly not enough to lock up. D

How did you avoid it happening? I found if I lifted my arm up, that would free the rope, but it wasn't good practive as it meant that I was slower when paying out, taking in the ropes, than with a normal ATC.

Also it meant that when lowering people the descent would be jerky and quick with sudden stops rather than slow and more controlled as with a normal ATC.

Your rope has a circumference of 10.5mm? Dude, I'd be more worried about that than your belay device.

what's wrong with 10.5mm???? allan, I don't think I ever experienced what you're talking about. is the device new? after a bit of use it should loosen up. D

For the math dis-inclined out there circumference means the distance around the rope, not how thick it is. 10.5 mm circumference = about 3.2 mm diameter. However, it may also be a clever phallic reference.

oh yeah, but I seriosly doubt anyone is stupid enough to climb on 3.2mm rope, let's not get caught up in the technicalities (btw, 3.2mm rope would not snag on the ATC) D
