Well we have all gotten them once or twice whilst at the gym or at the rock. You know, those comments that make you feel all fuzzy inside, a hohoho! My personal favorite:

"Oh, your brother (me) is the crimp master?"

Spray on my brothers and sisters!

A parent, walking into the gym with a bunch of kids. I was on the roof, locked feet off, in a position that looks awesome but takes no effort.

As she walks past, she says to the kids "Look, he's like spiderman"
In unison "oooOOOOoooooo"

I fell off laughing

"This route sucks. I hate it."

said of a route I set and called a 5.9. Everyone ended up liking it, but no one liked it when they first got on it.

"Wow, you climbed that?"

Said of a 5.11 in the gym. I ruthlessly mastered it (took forever and it's still hard) but I've got it wired now

"That move's impossible" - said to me by a guy who's climbed V13, as I showed him a problem of mine

"f#cking hell" - said by the same guy as I did the move 3 times in a row to show him it wasn't.

I think I need a towel to wipe off all this spray..

i think the best compliment i get is when someone says "Tim, i hate you" because that means i'm challenging them to do things they aren't comfortable with and expanding them as a climber. 8)

I got "Nice fall!" last night. I thought it was funny. What he meant was the fact that I was able to turn a dangerous fall with a heel hook eight feet up the boulder problem, not over a pad, into a half dyno-lunge to dget my sideways self to land on a pad a few feet away, and not get hurt in the process.

Best compliment?

When a guy or gal who climbs harder than me watches me try to do a problem and doesn't really offer either extreme support or too much beta, makes me feel like I am a decent climber worthy of a modicum of respect. Example.

Me, struggling on a difficult (for me) problem.

Guy who climbs harder than me nods, after I get off. We sit there silently for a few minutes. He offers up a simple, "I think they took off some of the footholds from that problem."

Me, nodding and looking at the problem. "Yeah, it seemed a bit sketchy"

Him, looking back at the problem, gives it a try, then sits next to me.

Me, nodding again, "So you switch feet there?"

Him, nodding.

I like the silent type.

Plus, when people don't talk down to me or treat me like the newbie I am, it makes me happy.

K.

"In the years I've lead trad, I've never seen anyone place more solid pieces."

Yay me. Right before he said this, I'd screamed down that I wouldn't be surprised if one of the nuts I placed was going to get fixed. He assumed I was doing a crap job of placing gear.

I think something along the lines of,

"Baby, I'd like to boulder you", but I wasn't that flattered.

Oh, and the ones complimenting my abnormally huge bulging biceps are cool too.

But I think my favorite thing about myself (it's so hard to choose just one, though) is my humble nature.

God, I love being me. :P

j/k

Really, I really enjoy trying to be as fluid as possible when I climb, so compliments on grace are the ones that I appreciate the most.

I like the comments you get while slacklining:

"Are you training for the circus?"

Reply, "Yes I am. You ever hear of Circ de Solei?"

Their reply, dumbfounded, "Are you really trainging for the circus?"

Or there's always the famous, "That looks dangerous. Be careful."

Thats freakin hilarious. I will have to remember that one.

As for compliments, a fairly proficient boulderer (female) once told me the way I climbed a certain problem looked "beautiful".

After a (fairly recent) lead, my second (a much more experienced climber, who in fact taught me to set pro) said to me "you set hexes like an old man" - meaning, I set them like someone who'd been setting pro for years.

Huge compliment.

Otherwise, I love when someone finally sends one of my routes after many attempts, and comes over to shake my hand to thank me for such a good route.
