hi,
I partially tore a ligament in my ankle last week and I'm out for a few weeks until it heals. I can't even do arms only climbing in case I go over on it when I fall. Anyone any suggestions for keeping my strength up so that I'm not weak as a kitten by the time I get back?

Light weights should do the trick.

Use a hangboard, or climb on low holds at the gym/outside/wherever. Anything that you can do without using your legs at all, but low enough that if you do fall, you can just step the one good foot down instead of both feet. Might look strange doing a campus route that's only four feet off the ground, but will keep your upper body strength in place.

If you belong to a gym that has a weight-assisted pull-up machine, that would work for the strength in your back, shoulders, and arms. It wouldn't help your finger strength much, but you wouldn't have to worry about ever coming down on your ankle because you are basically kneeling on a little platform and just step off when you are done.

buy some rock rings and let them hang near to the ground so you can sit down on the floor and pull up... because you're sitting.. you won't fall on your ankle and it's very safe you... good idea?

Cheers for your help guys! At least my upper body will be strong even if my legs can't support my weight when high-stepping!

I'm gonna second the hangboard and weights. Maybe go and do some light bouldering too...just don't put yourself in a position where you might fall off out of control or land too hard.

swimming was my best friend when I broke my ankle last year. Doesn't do a whole lot to help with climbing, besides toning and maintaining some muscles, but it will help you aerobically obviously. Add a few days a week of a hangboard/free weights workout and you'll be good to go!

If you are only out for a few weeks don't stress a huge loss of strength. If you insist on some strength training hit a regular gym and do some finger rolls, pullups etc. or better yet hit a hangboard if you can. Once back on rock I would keep that ankle wrapped for the extra support so it doesn't get hurt again. I would also restart easy and progress gradually. Good luck.

How about toproping in the gym? If your belayer keeps the rope tight for the first few metres, you won't deck, and climbing "one-legged" will probably only help your arms, fingers and other leg. And, of course, if you fall up on the wall, you won't generally get your feet into anything but air...
