What type of sponsorship deals do pro climbers get, like do they get paid big money to wear a pair of five tens?

Don't know about him, but if he got any $$$ compensation, I would bet it is in no way "big money". All the sponsored climbers I know get free gear only, and some get a bonus from their sponsor/s if they win a major comp in addition to the purse. Climbers don't get rich from climbing.

personally I only get free gear from my sponsors. I don't really give two hoots about money, i just like the free swag. I think the only way to get the $$$ is to win comps, do slide shows, and that sorta thing.

Of course they get money from their sponsors. They get money every time their name is mentioned in mag, every photo that appears, whenever they are used in an ad etc... There are lots of climbers that don't enter comps and still get sponsorship money. Each contract is a little different, depends on the company, depends on the climber.

I grew up as a sponsored surfer living in Hawaii. I never made that much money, but then again, I was never that good. A few of the kids I grew up with, however, made some serious cash... Take for example, Fred Patachia. When we were in High school together, I was a Sr. and he was a Jr. He had a contract with Quicksliver for I think 3 million dollars over 2 years. Not bad for a kid who can barely drive. He's making a lot more now. I always figured that climbers made some pretty good money (at least the "pros") but then again, surfing's a lot more popular than climbing. But it'd sure be nice to get free cams or something...

i can answer for slovenian climbers. most our climbers are normal emplyees, sponzored ones get free gear, good ones can get some funds from the mountaneering organization (wich we are a part of) and some are "employed" by the goverment (as well as most our athletes (team sports excluded)).

In reply to: Climbers don't get rich from climbing. Tori Allen made 6 figures in 2003. at least that's what she says in the Climbing article, but that article was really messed up. so i dunno.

its not really a discussed thing. most sponsored climbers only get gear (and maybe photo or comp insentives). the tops climbers are all getting money somehow. they may not be salaried (x amount in the bank every month, sometimes they have to call and ask for money for whatever they want to do). it is really company dependent though. prana for instance has far more money than most other, "solely" rockclimbing, companies so top athletes for them are far more likely to get money (though I dont know if they do or not).

I know Tori and she did not make 6 figures, maby her daddy did but she did not, she gets a little from sponcers for winning and then gets the cash prize of the comp. but thats it. Most sponcers only give their people gear no cash. Climbing is not a way to get rich or even make enough money to raise a family with. DX
