Falling on suspended lines

I've never slacklined before, but I saw this pic (http://rockclimbing.com/...tPhoto&PhotoID=29042) and it got me thinking - what does it feel like to take a fall on a line like that? Is it much different from falling on lead?

I've never taken a lead fall (we have opposite problems) but falling on a line with your safety line at your feet level is one of the scaryiest things I've done in a long time.

It's not a sudden stop as you bend the line down a lot - or at least thats how it went for me. It gave meaning to the term "big air". Of course I still haven't gotten down mouting from a dangling position so it kind of sucked even with a webbing ladder.

Edit: it still scared the crap out of me and I wasn't all that high up.. It's gotta takes big cajones for the big highlines like that.

If you're refering to the pic, Monkey's mouth, if your refering to mine:

I just set one up between a couple very big oak trees on my parent's land in Mountain Grove. A rather non-spectacular 40 footer length and something like 20-25 feet up just to get my feet wet and I only made it a few steps before bailing. Small beans compared to that pic.

(I had it three layers of lines with each on a different anchor lines made out of 12,000 lb test 2" webbing and everything very redundant -- I got enough of a taste to realize I need to wait before getting more into it).

I'm hoping to try out Clay Frisbee's highline near the top of his complex down town (grain silo building) sometime this summer when we go repelling off it next time - but we'll see may not happen.

So, what's it like taking a fall on the real big lines anyway?

Probably 4 times a week or so. T, TH mornings as part of a class and a few evenings here and there as I have time and homework permits. Their nice people, I like it over there. I hear a lot of bad things about gyms in general but I think they do a very good job.

Sorry to the thread poster for the off topic clutter though.

WOW, three layers for a 40 foot line 25 feet off the deck? Nice, notthins gonna break there.
Fallings not that bad, depends on the person. I have never fully whipped on a real highline, normally you should try and catch the line(s) because its not the best thing for the nylon to have biners running along it real fast, burns it. Some people are more comfy with the exposure. I saw one guy, worked for YOSAR, that went and soloed up some 5.8 climb, starting 700 off the deck, but couldnt take a step on a highline in that same area, 700 feet off the deck. Some tend to have it together better in the head, others it just dosnt really work, or takes alot of time....depends i suppose

This is very important information. Catching the line is proper way to fall. Highliners never try to take a leash fall as it is risky and damages the line.
You will also notice in the photo that Larry is tied directly into two 50Kn rings that were pre-threaded onto the line before it was tensioned. Carabiners have features which increase the possibility of actually cutting the line, while these smooth aluminium rings do not.

I have taken 2 leash falls and found them to be terrifying, catching the line is much less scary. It is, however, much more brutal than any climbing lead-fall.

I'm waiting for areyoumydude (Larry) to tell us about if it hurts when you catch the line.

Yes!!! It hurts. No, it's nothing like a leader fall. It also depends on how you're tied into the line. Swami or harness with legloops? Some people have their teather tied in front and then taped to there side or back, out of the way.

I thought I broke my back one time when falling with a swami, missing the line and landing face up.... causing my back to bend the wrong way.

Also, it hurts when you catch the line too. Most people catch the line with their leg, hooking it while going down. It leaves huge bruises, though.

I think that's why highlines are so great, you either style it.... or get hurt trying.

Cheers, Ammon

Theturtle knows. When you fall on a highline you want to try and catch it. I have fallen multible times on a highline and only once have I taken a leash fall. The leash fall felt like a leader fall with nothing but air, but the force on the line must be way higher than if you grab the line. If you wear a swami belt like Ammon or Dean the fall is going to be damn painfull unless you catch the line. That being said. Catching the line is no joke. You will get scraped, burned, and brused. Ouch!
Peace, Larry

Yeah man. I'd be into the Bridger line. But, I won't be able to walk for a few more weeks. My ankle is still pretty messed up.

I'll call you tomorrow.

Cheers

It is about 90' long and was first done by Jason Lakey. It is not the one in the vid. There is a picture of his send in the new Indian Creek guide book.
