I'm planning a 5 day all-bouldering road trip for sometime in early May and I need some help. The only thing I know for sure is that I am starting in Maryland, at some point I want to spend a day at Horse Pens 40, and I have to be back at work 5 days later. My first thought is to do Rumbling Bald, Horse Pens 40, and finish off at Cooper's Rock but I am far from convinced that is the best way to go. So if you guys were after the ultimate southeastern boulders and had limited time where would you go?

I would just drive straight to HP40 and stay there for the five days! Coopers is OK... if your a local just going out for the day. The only problem is that it is starting to get warm in the south and the friction on the slopers will be less than adequate. We just take a lantern out and boulder at night when it gets cold.

yeah, man, if you've only got five days why spend such a HUGE amount of it driving all over the palce??? Pick one destination and go enjoy it. Otherwise, you're going to spend so much time in a car, and then you'll be stiff and won't boulder so hot. You'll put a lot of pressure on yourself to perform in a short window of time, which never works. Three areas in five days that are not really near each other sounds like a bad combo.

Go to Boone, NC and use that as a base of ops and hit G-mom, Blowing Rock, etc. Enough there to keep you busy for 5 days with no problem.

I'd second the Boone recommendation for this time of year. Tons of stuff there! Although night bouldering at HP40 does sound totally awesome!

May could get a little warm down in Alabama. Aside from the tons of boulders in the Boone area, Stone Mountain and Rumbling Bald are relatively close. Boone is significantly closer.

I don't mind the heat so that isn't much of a consideration but I am concerned about my hands. I have climbed at Horse Pens before and that sandstone turned my palms into tender meat pops after a full weekend of climbing. I'm just not sure I could climb five days in a row on rock like that. What is the rock at Boone like? Could you climb on it for five days straight? Am I just a pansy?

I would spend the entire time iat HP40, like someone in a previous reply stated, to much time driving. Boone may still be a bit chilly and possibily WET, which it is allot!!! Rocktown may be alright too, but the best bang for your buck is hp40!!

You should go to Boone the bouldering there is GREAT! Grandmother, Lost Cove, and 221 are all good.

If you've never been to horse pens you must go. A S.E. bouldering trip isn't complete without a trip to the pens. You should also definately go to Rocktown. Go to drtopo.com and get a guide. Rocktown is only about an hour or so away from horse pens, though your fingertips will most likely be destroyed after a couple of days at HP.

Leaving from Maryland... Go to Rumbling Bald, then HP40, then Rock Town, then finish up with Boone, NC. Only 5 days will mean you will have to climb all day, then drive to the next place though. You need more time.

Rocktown is a good time.. one, be careful if you're taking a loaded car up the "gravel road" though. Not terrible, and definitely do-able. But, needs to be done very slowly in a normal car. If you have a SUV, no worries. But, I would have to agree with the million other responses on this.. just go to HP40 and let your tips bleed. There's no way you'll be able to climb 5 days straight. Although, two on.. one rest day, and then another two might be possible.
