What is the established procedure to verifying your own assent is a first?

There is a great boulder out in the desert near my childhood home that I plan on conquering next weekend. It is in the middle of a large valley of farms. Farmers don't boulder. You can scrabble up the backside but the face presents two or three possible routes. There is no other climbing of any kind within 30 miles in any direction (Logan Canyon being the closed).

I dun think there is an official way of doing it. But here is my very unofficial way in which all routes have been created.

1. Complete it
2. Name it
3. Rate it
4. Your done

Biographie, and all those famous ones people sent were created the same way. Theyre just so popular because of their difficulty. If your the first, then you have dibs on the name. So just spread the word (and include it in the routes section of this website so others can try it out.)

I agree with roclymer about the procedure:

Climb it, Name/rate it

Also there are a few things you can do if you want to be sure of a FA.

First look for chalk or cleaning. Many people have claimed to put up problems that have obviously been cleaned before. Just because a problem doesn't get climbed, doesn't mean it has NEVER been climbed. If you notice that you are climbing on clean (no moss, no choss, no crumbling rock) holds, then you might question the FA. Unless you are on metamorphic or other types of rock that seldom need cleaning.

Secondly, do a little research. Ask the long-time climbers in the area if the problem has been climbed.

Lastly, try not to think of a problem as yourswhen you do send it. This leads to spraying, bashing and fighting. You have simply "pointed out" a new problem.

peace,

tim
