** Nope.

Do you completely entrust your safety to other people?

** Completely? Nope.

How do you determine who is worthy of your trust?

** The proof is in the actions, and it's also a bit of a gut feeling.

Do you know what to check on each time you rope up?

** Yep.

Do you check other peoples anchors before you climb on them?

** Depends. Trad gear, usually. If it's a bolt anchor, and I am familiar with the route, typically not.

Have you considered taking a class?

** I have taken several "classes," just never paid for them. I've been incredibly fortunate to have been taught by people who guide and teach climbing for a living (or did at one point.) These people are friends, and have always been willing to share lessons with me.

Have you found a mentor?

** Yep. Several.

Do you know what to do if someone gets hurt?

** I'm a paramedic. That's my job.

Have you done your homework? (Read books)

** Yep, though there are several books I still want to buy.

1. Almost, but there are some small requirements
2. If you climb, at some you have to.
3. I sleep with them.
4. I have some basic checks I do on me and my partner.
5. Not when I have to jumar up to see the anchor but otherwise ….Yes for the most part.
6. For what?
7. Mentor? No. Good Friends who have taught me much…Yes.
8. Run? Yes I am CPR/1st aid and Dan o2 up to date qualified. And have spent a mere two climbing days this year solely dedicated to rescue.
9. Always reading.
Good Q’s You never know when we’ll be tested for real.

I assume that you did this out of boredom, so I will answer your questions out of my own quest for simple amusement.

1. That depends on the type of climbing, but definitely not my mom.
2. Everyone but doctors.
3. Russian Roulette (Whoever will play to earn my trust, has earned it).
4. Yes. (Vagisil - check, Beanie - check, Spraylight is green - check, Annoying dog - check, etc.)
5. Isn't that kinda rude? Do ask your girlfriend or wife, could you drop your drawers so I can check to make sure you're good and clean tonight?
6. Those who can't do, teach. :wink: But I've considered teaching.
7. Tori Allen is always booked.
8. Don't take the blame.
9. Yup.

Just about. Depends on what kind of climbing, though.

Depends on the person. For a known partner, absolutely. For an unknown, I wouldn't want to put myself in a situation where I have to trust them, but I don't know if I can.

Past performance. Reputation. Obviously, sometimes I climb with someone I don't know, and in those cases I don't get into difficult, committing, unfamiliar climbing right off the bat. People are generally honest about their experience and abilities, for the most part. Ask, then keep an eye on them if you need to, or teach them if you feel it's worth your while. If they know more than you do, then take advantage of it and learn.

Also, I never rely on the assumption that my partner's abilities are greater to keep me safe.

You mean the technical details? Harness, knot, belay device, shoelaces, fly?

If I'm the guinea pig, yes, probably. If they've tested it for me, no, probably not, unless I feel some reason to suspect it.

Yes. A first-aid course would probably be highest on my list. For other technical matters, I've learned a lot by myself so far, and although it's quite rewarding that way, I have to say it's much more time consuming. I've considered taking a class as a way to break into new territory and get "up to speed" on things that I'm not very familiar with.

Kiss it better? Honestly though, spending more time on self-rescue and first aid training and practice would do us all some good. I always feel it's a shame to waste a sunny day on it, but that's not the point, is it?
