All, I was edging, on a 5.8 face climb, on the inside of my left foot, on a small (for me) hold. I felt something right around my ankle give way with a tell-tale "pop". I knew I had blown out muscle or worse. I compensate climbed easier stuff for the rest of the night. It is still sore in a verticle line behind (above and below) my ankle. Will climbing more injure me worse? what am I doing wrong if anything? yes, I was hydrated and stretched out plenty. Does anyone have any good specific facts or advice? Thanks, Biggy

Yo, I agree with above post... And from your post it's not very clear whether or not you hurt your ankle, pulled a muscle, stretched a tendon, etc... Whatever it is, RICE... Rest Ice Compression (wrap with tensor bandage) Elevation peace, nik

hey, i play rugby all the time so i know the good old pop noise. the key to getting back to regular life is RICE R-rest I-ice C-compression E-elevation. use all these things and it should get better in a week or so. Ibuprofen is great if you have swelling, plus it helps to numb some of the pain. Good luck with that ankle. Nicki

In reply to: It is still sore in a verticle line behind (above and below) my ankle. Will climbing more injure me worse? If you had a sore wrist would you go play baseball? Do you think it would make your wrist better or worse?

You have to ask?! Drink hard - you'll never know your ankle hurts after enough liquor in your system! Seriously... get your A#$ to a DOCTOR and use your common sense!!

In reply to: All, I felt something right around my ankle give way with a tell-tale "pop". I knew I had blown out muscle or worse. It is still sore in a verticle line behind (above and below) my ankle. You have done some serious damage and should head for the emergency room right away. As anyone with even a remote familiarity with medicine and/or nursery rhymes should know, the "pop" you heard was your "weasel". You were correct in diagnosing this as a "blown out muscle". Those of us who are more well endowed (you are obviously one) find that this muscle does indeed hang "right around [our] ankles". Also I would like to commend you for your command of the english language, not many people know that a "verticle" is a hinge or joint, and would have used "vertical" (as in Vertical Limit, 5 star movie if I have ever seen one... almost as good as Cliffhanger, but I digress) as in a line at right angles to the horizon. Anyway, definately see doctor, he will probably say "no more monkeys jumping on the bed", but thats fine. Just as long as the monkey doesn't chase the weasel around and around the mullberry bush you should be in good shape.

tough room....... Fortunately, I am looking for advice and not approval...LOL.... Seriously, yes I would play baseball on a hurt wrist, I'd bat with one arm, favor it, whatever.......I ran on a broken toe......and I go to work when I am sick....I think vomiting, and headaches are a healthy catharsis....aboriginal americans hunted buffalo with broken legs, and in dying throes.........you know it.... Why should anyone try to "command" the english language in a rock climbing forum? have you read any of the great books lately? Let's talk about it.....why is there a spell check button here? how many americans own a tie clip, cufflinks, a thesaurus, hand blown or cut chalices? people wear ballcaps to the opera......and flip flops to graduation......omit pronouns when they speak.......refuse to shave for family dinners....... my ankle is healing......i climbed through it...ran a few miles yesterday after canoeing and hiking.......... my broken toe is healing too..... laughing out loud.... forgive my obtuseness

This is North America, ppl are known for the cockiness, and the love of annoying others. Some ppl just like to spell bad, and dont' want to use spell check, ppl like me. So all i gotta say is you asked for it

I realize that I'm a fool for climbing on a hurt leg, I just wondered if anyone had some massage techniques, or some special stretching or a similar story. The "english language" response was to the relativity of what is "proper" english......I mean let's face it, very few people speak or write it very well, me included........ that story about the boulderer who snapped his leg....brrrrrrrrrrrrr.....that was chilly!! wild tale....... so...if you know any more wisdom outside of the MD's office....do tell..... Thanks

Three months ago I snapped my ankle hitting the wall from a lead fall. Did A hefty amount of damage to the temdons , ligaments etc. Break has healed fine but the rest is taking forever. My climbing is getting back to standard but you will just have to be patient. I have gone on the theory that when the pain switches from nice muscle burn and stiffness to sharp " cant put full weight on heel" that my body is saying "stop it you tosser!" What has worked for me (frustrating as it is) was plenty of rest then a slow rebuild of the muscles in the gymn, then out to the climbing. Even now though I do as the ankle says when it says it, dont fancy spending another three months watching crap day time television and miss all the nice summer climbing. Call me a wuss but I suggest you adopt the same approach. :D

Well, I'm glad you know your a fool. Anytime I get injured I think about the long term effects. Taking a week off could mean a year less of pain when your older, especially when your talking about your ankle. I sprained my ankle a year ago pretty severly and I was up and going after a couple days. However, I still get re-occurances a year later with it. Having said that, you will find that if you rotate your ankle around for a couple minutes prior to climbing will help warm up the joint. Do some simple exercises and make sure that you are warm before you start climbing. Then of course, go through a normal warm-up routine. If your still having to go through RICE, you probably shouldn't be climbing. So, any swelling, etc should not be present. Good Luck

when i broke my ankle, i was straight back on the climbing. (after 6 month lay off). it still hurts from time to time, guess i should have warmed it up more rather than heading straight back in. if you want my advice lad, take it easy. the rock will always be there.

It is impossible to know the exact nature of the injury from the sound it made. Diagnosis requires an x-ray. I made the mistake of not seeing a doctor for 5 months after twisting my ankle. When I ankle began to fuse up and get stiff I finally went only to find out that I had broken my ankle and it had healed improperly. I have rehabilitated it so that I can use it without any problems noW, but if I stop using it it fuses up again. I continually need to use my ankle to keep it from going bad all because I refused to see a doctor and blew off the idea that I had been badly injured. GO SEE A DOCTOR :o :P gt
