I am planning on making a couple of trips with friends to the Phoenix area in the next couple of months. My friends are beginners and I was wondering were would be a good place that are either TR or Sport to take beginners in the Phoenix area. Thanks

I would suggest Svens Slab at the McDowell Mtns. in Scottsdale. It is basically the Bunny Hill for all the newbies in the valley. It is easy, well protected, and short. You can get more info about it if you go to the arizona section of the routes data base and search for Svens Slab. Let me know if you need directions.

Definitely the McDowells. most of its bolted around Svens. there is a good range of climbing, 5.5-5.12 i think, and anything from 100ft to 20ft roped bolder.

Hey I will be in Phoenix from August 18-24... If you want to get together and hit some boulder problems I'm all about it. And yes, Don Henley, I can smell the heat coming off the street.

There've been a few warnings about bee hives and wasp nests out near Sven's. We have the Africanized bees out here, so it'll be worth your while to search the site and find that thread. The info as to where the nests were located was quite detailed, so check it out.

I tried going to Sven's a couple of weeks ago on a little scouting trip. This was going to be my first time there. I got stopped, though, by the rough road. My Hyundai Elantra wasn't going to make it all the way there and it was too hot, for me, to do the hike.

Yep, you do have to watch for the bees. but if you stay in the sven slab area you should ok. The hives the I ran across were back near One for the road which is to the far left of the main sven slab climbs. Someone else ran across a hive up on 5.3, I think it is known as "bunny____" dont remember the entire name. it is to the left of dark passage a little ways. You should be able to hear the hives, so if you do be careful.

You guys can hit up Echo Canyon as well for some pretty good bouldering. Not many problems, but some fun ones. I'm not positive, but I think theres some bouldering at Papago Park as well. I used to climb mostly indoors due to the heat.... as jcain found out. In any case, I'm getting home from vacation soon, and I've been able to aquire a fair amount of gear, so now i can start exploring outdoors. If anyone wants to climb, lemme know. I'll be in town Aug 23.

Svens is bolted slab routes, not typical sport routes where you can put in two draws to set up a toprope. If you are looking for more run of the mill sport routes, you might want to check out Atlantis or Upper Devils Canyon out at Queen Creek. Atlantis is in the shade most of the day, and Upper Devils gets late afternoon shade. It's going to pretty hot at any of these places.
