Pretty much the only decent metal ever was Black Sabbath.

If by old metal you mean LEd Zep, Deep Purple, aso, I would say Old. I got the last Linkin Park, and it's annoying to my ears. I wouldn't call King Crimson Metal but Progressive Rock, like Jethro Tull, Pin Floyd, or the less known Caravan and Soft Machine. Anyway, I like King Crimson, and the story of the band is so sad.

I consider old metal to be pre-grunge.

Sabbath and Priest are (gag on this term) classic metal.

I think you have to take it band by band. Judas Priest? Blah. Black Sabbath? Oh, baby. Metallica? Used to be "oh, baby." Now they're "blah."

linkin crap isn't metal...they're refered to pop-crap that takes over my radio.....

slayer, ozzy, black sabbath, JP, iron maiden, mega death, etc etc etc.....

as for the "new" metal that puts some face paint and masks on and jump around stage...meh i said, i don't mind them too much.....(any band when the drummer has a beer keg apart of his drum set can't be a band serious about prefection....striving to make music purest to them, thus sticking to there story...)

some of the GOOD new metal bnds to come out, SOAD is my favorite of the NEWER types of metal to come out....

masks/paint: Mudvayne is pretty cool...mushroomhead ok....slipknot *first albume only is good, the other 2 is pop-metal crap)

and of course, who can possibaly forget my Gods....

I found 'And Justice for All' the last great Metallica album.... after that they started their commercial spiral down even though Black is also quite good.... I was still in high school but it at least led me on other paths where, when I started climbing some of the music I heard was Primus, Soundgarden, Spiderbait and Pantera.....

Old metal, by all means! Led Zeppelin, Metallica (Justice for all)...And yes, can anyone remember the group "Death Angel" ? If I remember correctly, the members were all native americans; not very famous but I liked them back then in high school. I wonder if they're still active.

i agree. soad are really good. and metallica used to be.

i liked metallica until the black album. even that one was showing some serious deterioation. now theyre worse than linkin park.

and why nobody mentioned sepultura. that kinda newer metal.

how about HIM??? /turns around and pukes/

Sometimes I still listen to Queensryche's album 'Operation Mindcrime'. I used to have it on vinyl!

Now I love System of a Down. Does that count?

And what's up with The Darkness? Could they sound any lighter in the loafers?

They could try but it would be tricky.

I used to work out in "The Dungeon" which is Clemson University's weight club. One day we checked out their CD list, from which we could choose a CD to play.

The first 5 were ALL of Metallica's albums.
The next two were Nine Inch Nails.
The next three were Danzig.

Then, to top it all off, the last three were "Metal Mixes."

BECAUSE 10 ALBUMS OF METALLICA, DANZIG, AND n.i.n. JUST ISN'T ENOUGH METAL.

For Pete's sake, how do you people stand this crap. They wouldn't even put in my Def Leppard Vault album because it was "too light."

Jeez.
