Father and Son Climbers Die in the Alps

A father and son have died while climbing in the Swiss Alps.
The two Frenchmen, aged 47 and 22, set off on September 17 from the village of Saas-Fee to climb several 13,000 foot peaks, said police in the southern canton of Valais.
They were last in phone contact two days later and were eventually reported missing by the father’s wife. Police did not disclose their identities, but said they came from the eastern Alsace region.
An air rescue service pilot spotted the two bodies lying on a glacier yesterday and they were taken to the nearby resort of Zermatt by helicopter. The exact circumstances of their deaths remain unclear, police said.
At least 66 people have died while climbing in the Swiss Alps since the start of May.

66 people. WOW! Swiss Alps huh?
How many in the Rockies since May? Since it's such a small area, how many in any one state since May? This seems like an unbeliveable number.

thats mostly because people go on a tour poorly prepared and/or equipped. its a sad but true fact that most of the accident could and should have been avoided.
you get people who cant go up a flight of stair without bursting a lung trying to climb a peak wearing converse allstars (if youre luchky and it isnt sandals) with a bad forecast and no raingear. maybe even drunk a drop or two.
its probably because the mountains look so accesible. but prople forget that when youre above treeline (and in some places even below that boundary) theres little to hide you from the elements, that the rock can and do break and that youre some way from nearest help other than your buddys (if you were smart enough to invite some along and they were stuip enough to go with you).
but this sounds like a hones-to-god accident and not darwin at work as usual. symphatys to the family.
