Hi,

I've eared that it was possible to climb or boulder on the Mont-Royal ... I walked that mountain up last week and couldn't find it

I would like to know where exactly is the spot, as it is really near my house.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

I've been up there many times (biking mostly).
I'd be really pissed if there is rock up there that I haven't seen.

Cheers,
Raymond

I know of one person who swears there's bouldering to be had there, but I've never found it.

Check out this post. One guy is talking about some solid granit slabs....
I doubt there is granit on the mont royal, but hell you can try to reach him...

PS: And please let us (or me at least) know if you do find something.

The only rock climbing on the island of Montreal is at Île-Ste-Hélène. It is mainly bouldering with a few bolts for top rope. You can find the topo at DrTopo.com.

The only ice on the island of Montreal is on Mont-Royal somewhere behind McGill. I have never been there but if your contact the local ACC Section, they can tell you where it is.

Note: It is not granite but an igneous protrusion, like all other climbing spots in the Montreal area (Rigaud, etc).

It's Réservoir McTavish... on the side lines of the empty training field at the corner of McTavish St and Des Pins. Pretty boring spot for Ice if you ask me.

As for slabs on Mt-Royal... hum... other then dynamited rock, on don't see what can be climbed there. Maybe a monument in the cemetery!

Hi,
there is actually one boulder that i've found.
It has a sweet overhang..
it's not a difficult problem but it's a fun thing to do if you can't get out of the city..
The boulder is easy to miss though.. you have to look hard..
Go to park jeanne mance.. walk up the hill about 50 meters.. it's to the left of tam tams. Walk around there and you will eventually see it.. the rock has some grafitti on it (damn kids). often you'll see the chalk marks left on the rock. Sorry i can't give you more precise directions.. but it's there.. i've been there twice this summer.
Another place is by the lookout point on mt royal.. near lac des castors..
there is a wall you can climb.. not very big.. about 15 feet high.. but good holds.. you need a good spotter else if you bail you might roll down the hill.. not good..
good luck in the search.. there isn't much out there..

Before or after the gravel road?

Again, from the gravel road, when going up the mountain, on the left hand side (west) or right hand (east)?

Tks!

Good question.. the boulder is before the gravel road.. it's just off the left of the street leading up the mountain.. maybe 50 feet from it..
It's the same place JF was talking about..

I have a pic of the little boulder.. i'll put it up in a few. mind you.. it's barely a bouldering problem.. more like something to do when bored.

The other place.. i really couldn't tell you.. that day we walked and took so many turns by the time we got there i didn't know my arse from my elbow..

Here is a topo of the parc. Maybe this will help.
http://www.lemontroyal.qc.ca/pdf/carte-e.pdf

There is definately some solid rock by the lookout. You go up on the trail where the stairs are, and walk a bit to the left. It isn't all that exciting, but it's probably better than nothing.

Thanks guys... This is great info. You prove me wrong! I always thought there wasn't anything to climb on Mt-Royal... Still not much there, but something exists!

Hi!

Thanks for all the great info you guys provided.

I contacted JF 4 days ago, I haven't got a reply from him yet :? It doesn't matter really, because discolegsyndrome told us it was the same spot... Anyway...

I will go to the boulder next week with my friend, and we will probably walk to the top of the mountain using the little tracks in the wood, and I will check for other cool spots; if I find some, be sure that I will post them on the thread

BTW, I was subscribed to the CEPSUM climbing gym, and everytime I went there, you can see through the window besides the registration office, there is a football field. Behind this football field, there is a 10meters crag, I don't know if it is safe or climbable... Somebody knows what I'm talking about ?

I finally found the boulder; It was really well hidden, and it was to the right of the statue in the tam-tam area, if you are facing the west side ...

I also hiked up a bit in the mountain, and i found a LOT of 20 foots cliffs / boulder ... I was really shocked ... There is definitely something to do there, but the cliffs are to steep and if you fall off the boulder, you take a nice roll down the cliff ...

Still, if some people could clean the area, take off the rocks that are moving, and build a little path that lends to the boulders, that could be great!

Um, no, that would not be great. There's incredible erosion happening on the mountain right now, with all the mountain bikers destroying the woods and the city not doing anything to help counter the erosion.
The last thing the mountain needs is more trails.

Hey guys,

You can do a traverse across the road from the lookout. The climbing is nice, the setting ugly: gazillions of cars nipping at your heels...

Enjoy!

Has anyone ever tried climbing on the blastouts?

They looked kind of sweet, but I was up there at 3am and they were only lit by the moonlight.

Is everything really loose, or could you place gear?

P.S. You can get ontop of the cross. It's a shitty, manufactured 5.0, but the setting is pretty sweet! The gates surrounding the cross are chained together, and if you climb up to the top, you can push them apart enough to squeeze though. After that, a ladder goes all the way up with landings every 15 feet.
