Laws are different from place to place but way up here in Canada it is illegal. I'm not sure what the penalties are but we simply only builder after dark and keep a sharp eye-out for cops and security. Haven't been caught yet. Check-out www.buildering.net Happy buildering.

Climbing on privat property is illigal, who knows what the pentalty is. They might just slap you on the hands, or get you for trespassing, just do it at night. And...running from cops, well, thats fun, unless you get caught

It's definitely illegal. However, the worst they can nail you with is "tresspassing" or "public recklessness," etc. AW

I'm pretty sure low buildering and traverse work will only get you yelled at, especially cause you can jump right down and have put no one at any risk, but when you start buildering high you get in much more trouble because of the fact that this will A0 cause traffic problems, B) be dangerous to yourself and preumably those below you and C) Its a lot easirer to jump off real quick and say sorry officer from a few feet up than from twenty. Builder away, just don't set up a sport route on any local schools or churches, cause that is likely to get you more than a warning

Unless of course you have somehow procured the permission from the owner(s) of the building - then you're breaking no laws. Do be careful though, as the cops are prone to "find" something to cite you for if they can't find anything else (no offense Jody). Case in point: My brother was caught bridge-jumping in Ohio when we were kids (I got away) and was charged with, of all things, attempted suicide. The judge gave him a pretty stern talking-to, but let him off with a warning not to do it again. Mick

I live in a small town and when someone called the cops on us (we were climbing a local shopping mall at 12:00am) 4 cars showed up just to figure out what the hell we were doing. Then when they figured it out they decided it was better than selling drugs to school kids so they said we could stay. But about 20 minutes later their boss came by and told us we had to leave because it was private property and we might sue the owner. All this just to say, I don't think you should run from the cops. All they will probably do is tell you to leave and they might find it entertaining. phyre

Thanx for all the great advice and cool site...i think i'll risk it...the worst they can do is take away my climbing shoes (i'd rather go to jail before that happens) or my mom could suspend my trips to the local gym...LOL

Might I suggest not to use chalk and to keep a low (discreet) profile? The authorities at Stanford University turned a benign eye on boulderers all over campus for many years until the chalk got out of control and certain locals started doing things like bouldering past open windows during working hours when people were working inside. That prompted an official crackdown on everybody at all times. We were eventually able to get "official" sanction to builder on 2 buildings but a lot of the best buildings are now off limits.
