Is rock climbing in the gym just practice for getting out on the real rock? Or do some of you only climb in the Gym? If you only climb in the gym do you feel like your misssing out at all because your not outside? Which is better, the gym or the real deal???

i can just give you my opinion...

gym climbing is only training for real rock for me. you can train better in a controlled enviroment.

but NOTHING comes close to climbing real rock. the experience is just so much better it cant be explained by words. you need to experience it yourself.

I climb mostly in a gym.. cause thats all thats available.. Im not allowed to climb on real rock by myself and there arent too many serious climbers in my area..I am not saying Im SERIOUS...: ) But I have gone a couple of times on Natural rock.. and it DEFINITELY beats the gym...except for when its raining.. hehe

Real rock is definately better! The gym serves its purpose for training and hooking up with other climbers. I find that I personally can climb harder and better on real rock.

You're trying to compare apples and oranges. Both are a type of fruit, but that's pretty much where the similarity ends. Climbing inside is fun, and dry, and very good for a workout or to improve ones strength. However, there has no comparison to climbing outside, as an orange has no comparison to an apple.

However, in this case one can choose which is superior: IMHO, that would be real rock.

I hadn't had an opportunity to climb on real rock until recently and I agree with what others are saying - there's no comparison! If you are new to climbing you definitely need to go to the gym to work on your strength and try out new things, not to mention to meet other climbers. Get onto real rock as soon as you can and you'll see more of what you need to work on at the gym for sure.

real rock is the way to go but there are some people that io have me th when i have been at the gym that prefer to climb indoors (i have know idea why) but thay are not real climbers, real climbers go on real rock. so you can't call your self a climber if you only have been on rock a couple of times,

Some people may be perfectly happy to stay inside without ever touching real rock. It really is personal preference. I myself like the outdoors better, but I can't always get outside. So, the gym is the next best thing.

If all you can do is climb in a gym then that is cool. The Gym and Rock both have their merits. I will say this, without Real Rock we would not have "the Gym"...

I you can't go out to the real thing due to weather, time, access then you go climb in the gym. I feel those are good reasons....I don't have time to go to the real thing due to the weather, my job, family and most important my daughter....My wife and daughter come first...

The gym is fun, but real rock beats the poop out of it; if you're gonna do something, do it right. Enough said.

I think most of us would agree that real rock is where it's at......but lets not denounce the importance of the networking that can be done at your local climbing gym. How many partners have you found on a Tuesday night while bouldering at the gym? Your local gym is often the cornerstone of a climbing community. It allows us to stay in contact with other cimbers throughout the off season, meet partners, girl friends (or boy friends)......but most importantly we bond with other climbers. Ledts be honest the climbing in your local gym probably isn't the main reason your there night after night......it's feeling like you're missing something by not attending. So if your asking which is more fun without a dought it's real rock........but gym climbing can be just as important to your outdoor accomplishments.

Gym is for practice. Rock is best. That's my opinion anyway. To each his or her own.

I definitely agree that climbing on real rock is FAR better than climbing in the gym, but climbbermuda makes a great point in that all the people that I have climbed outdoors with I have met at the gym, so it is definitely a good idea to start indoors.

Taino - couldn't agree more...Apples and Oranges! Yeah they're both round and both food but...

Climbergog - Well said for a climber living in Colorado. You have to be careful NOT to trip on a rock when you go outside  !

Well me - When I lived in the Bay Area, the gym definitely served it's purpose(s). FIRST and foremost it was better than a climbing magazine (soft porn  ) to keep me going when the nearest rocks worth driving to were at least two hours away. SSECOND - since I'm not really the "bar-scene" type and I never really likde beaches all that much, where else am I going to see that many attractive, uh, people hanging out in one place wearing skin-tight outfits... AND MOST IMPORTANT, it's a cheap place to get yoga, a sauna and shower and pull on plastic and take falls with no care for $50 or so a month!

Now that I live near the Gunks (within 20 minutes), I haven't stepped foot in a gym since I moved here. Year-round rock and ice! :D

My 2 Cents
-Jason :D

i work at a gym and hate climbing there. sure its great for training but thats about it. if you want to have fun you need to climb outside and feel the exposure.

the bad thing the gym does is have a whole bunch of safty regulations u have to follow and then u end up with a tiny testicular region. like u wont run out in a gym. for a while i was terrified to run out leading outside cuz of the gym. actually the first time i skipped a bolt outside i was pissed at myself for being unsafe... but in actuallity i did the right thing. its just about learning what to do.
