Does anyone have any advice on how to wrap my rope? I use a technique my old partner showed me where i sit indian style and wrap it around my knees. Afterwards, i make a loop with the last few feet, wrap around one side of the whole wrap torwards the top of the loop, and then pull the loop down to tighten. Sounds good so far, but it seems to knot like hell when i try to unwind. i don't like knots!

Learn the butterfly coil. You can look it up in almost all books, including Mountaineering The Freedom of the Hills.

Never coil your rope. It puts twists in the rope that will cause it to kink up. If you are trad climbing, butterfly it, or if you are sport climbing, stack it in a rope bag. -Jay

Well you could try this method. Get an old rim that's the sam size as your car's. Jack up your car and pull one of the drive wheels off (rear for rear wheel drive front for front wheel) Put that old rim on where you just took off the tire. Now tie your rope to that rim. Get in the car, put it in gear and floor it. Bammo! you've got yourself a nice tight tire coil! To uncoil just shout rock and toss that rim over the side of the cliff. Seriously. Jay's right. The butterfly coil is where it's at. Grab both ends and alternately drape bights of rope over your neck. It's fast and doesn't induce too many kinks. Throwing it in a rope bag works really well too.

use the buddy system...have on guy hold one end of the rope and put their hands on their waist and pull their elbows back. Use their elbows as a spool and you can wind around and make sure the rope doesn't twist while you're at it. When you're done winding, tie it off and you're good to go. Looks like I did learn something useful in the Air Force.

Take one end in your right hand and with your left hand, grab the rope near your right hand and slide it along the rope while you loop the rope behind your neck and bring your left hand down to your left side while continuing to slide it along the rope. Now drop the rope in your right hand and grab the rope just below your left hand and bring the rope behind your head and down to your right side again. Repeat. This is a type of butterfly method. Very easy and easy to do while standing on a ledge. Traddad

LKearn the butterfly coil. The mountainers coil, waht you are doing now, put a 1/2 twist in the rope for every coil... you probably spent an hour uncoiling your rope from the manufacturer, getting all of the twist out, why would you put them back in?

Well if you are TRing than the butterfly coil works wonders. Start with the two ends together, and you end up with the middle of the rope right there. After you set up your anchor clip the middle of the rope in and you set. If you are sport climbing get yourself a rope bag. Reduces time and is usualy quicker coiling your rope as well. Good Luck - Rock Freek -

i think that the easiest thing to do is get a rope bag. i have the BD slacker and i think that it is the best investment to make. the price is approx $40. it protects you rope from dirts on the ground and i can flake the rope into it in about 5 min. once in to rope bag you zipe it up and there are compression straps to make it smaller. i have been climbing since '94 i cant believe that it took me 8 years to get one. also, once open it acts as a tarp to protect your rope from the evil debris on the ground. http://www.bdel.com/rockclimbing/ropes-etc_superslacker.html
