Climbing since Sept 2001. Injuries: Various amounts of missing skin all over legs, ranging up to 2-3 sq in patches. 3rd degree sprained left ankle, falling 15' from blowing a bouldering dyno Dislocated right patella, bouldering 40' off the ground I'm sure there's other more spectacular injuries... - d.

Only injuries that were 'serious' enough to impact my climbing: Chronic tendon problems in both elbows. Reduced left wrist motion range, prone to inflammation and sprain. Ring and middle fingers, left hand, permanently damaged and disfigured and prone to further injury (over-use injuries) Ring finger, right hand, permanent lump just below knuckle. Torn ligaments in palm of right hand (more than a year to fully heal - perhaps the most vexing injury I ever sustained, self inflicted while TRAINING!) Sprained clavicle (bouldering, fell on my ass and sprained my clavicle doing it.... does that mean my head is up my ass???) Rotator cuff issues Badly bruised both heels (VERY painful and lingering too!) Puncture wounds from crampons Broken right leg Broken left ankle Broken left wrist Crushed left calf muscle Various sprained ankles (more than I care to count) Lacerations, cuts, contusions and knocks on the head Frost nip At least half a billion brain cells from high altitude headaches and such Bad sunburn Various aches, pains and bruises Lots of blisters Hyperextended knee If I include ski mountaineering I can also throw in 2 thumb sprains A few more ankle injuries And a few more cuts Nothing too serious, on balance. But clearly this sport is KILLING ME! DMT

Knock wood. Going on 2 years... 3" rope burn inside right elbow during lead climbing test. 20" (total) rope burns inside right knee the next day while practicing leading. Making progress if 7 times as much burn is progress. Minor tendon soreness requiring 4 days of rest. Rub rabbit's foot. Arthritis gets painful after each of 3 treks up Mt. Yonah (about 3 miles with net altitude change about 1000' each way). I guess self-inflicted aches don't count.

7 years of climbing has yielded: flappers a few sprained fingers a bruised heel (no pad, peeled off a boulder from 12 feet and landed on an egg sized rock) I must not climb enough. :P d.

Climbing since 1997 and thankfully nothing serious. A few sprained ankles, some pulled muscles, thousands of minor scratches and cuts (primarily on the hands and lower legs.) Granite takes a bite out of somebody like nothing else, but quartzite edges cut deep!!!

8 years climbing: -currently nursing a second degree ankle sprain (indoor bouldering fall--ARGH!!) -chronic mid-back problems (severely reduced range of motion in T2-T8 vertebrae, probably genetic, probably had it my whole life, climbing hard and often makes it much worse) -one permanently swollen knuckle from unknown climbing injury, occasionally painful I consider myself lucky. For all those with brusied heels from bouldering falls, consider yourselves lucky too. My boyfriend fell about 8 feet, landed toes on pad, heel off. Result was a split in half and shattered heel.

3 years Injuries: - chronic tendonitis - both elbows, - torn rotator cuff - right shoulder, - triangular fibrocartilage tear - right wrist, - torn tendon - right hard/arm (8+ weeks off), - many cuts/scrapes/bruises. I'm also quite adept at blowing off crimps and shredding my knuckles. Good times.

Broke a chunk of rock bouldering that fell on my knee=13 stitches Screw bouldering...the vast majority of folks that I know that have acute (constantly getting ankle sprains) and chronic injuries (elbows, shoulders, and fingers screwed up) boulder all the time. Know you limits, Climb Smart.

In reply to: What can they do for a fractured heel? Depends. In his case, the calcaneous (heel bone) was split partially in half (basically a wedge from the back of his heel bone in) and the bottom section was in many pieces. It was that bottom section that was the real concern. He was lucky, in that he didn't put ANY weight on it from the time it happened, so when he saw the surgeon a week later, the pieces of the bottom section had stayed in their normal places, so he got away without surgery. He was instructed not to put any weight on it for about three months, then was in a walking boot for another couple of months. Had he been unlucky, he would have needed surgery to put the bottom section back together.

Climbing for 4 or 5 years. Tendonitis in both elbows, Bruised right heel, A few flappers, and big scratch down to the bone, with rocks having to be cleaned out of the bone on my left elbow (not really sure what kind of break it is called, but the rock ground down some of the bone as I fell). Not too bad for 4 or 5 years really.

I haven't been climbing too long, but thus far I've suffered: -bruised and skinned knees -a bruised shoulder due to whacking self on a plastic hold while swinging freely on a rappel in a gym -sore tendons in hands and wrists (learned not to hold on so tightly, that helped) -scuffed up knuckles I hope to eventually graduate to greater injuries, but that's it for now.

Mostly cronic type conditions rather than injuries; some primarily related to climbing and some just to a recreation oriented lifestyle. Interesting that none of the serious injuries are from falls while climbing. In 25 years: Mostly Climbing Related Dislocated right shoulder (other activities the first few times then climbing - required surgery) Shoulder tendinitis in left shoulder (aggrevated by climbing - required surgery) Tendinitis on the inside of both elbows (One required surgery) Tendinitis on the outside of right elbow Various sprains and tweaks of most all joints plus my back Numerous abrasions, cuts, and bruses Ganglian cyst in finger (eventually went away) Bunions from tight climbing shoes (one required surgery) Pulled hamstring (yea - I actually did this climbing, and more than once) Others from outdoor activities but not directly climbing related Chondramelatia in both knees, especially the left Occasional hip irritations Arch problems in feet Sprained ankle(s) (Left one required surgery) Chip in small bone in wrist Sprained back (several times) On the flip side, I feel that my active lifestyle is healthy and an overall benefit to my well being. Without the challenge of climbing and other forms of outdoor recreatin that keep me active I would likely be developing more serious and potentially life threatenting conditions.
