So I have a job with the YA, guys . . . choice of Tuolumne Meadows or the Valley. I've heard pros and cons both ways . . . since you all are going to be there, what's your opinion?

Spent some time in both places-Tuolomne is my choice by far for the summer. Don't have to deal with the crowds and you can still buzz down to the Valley in relatively short order(If the tourists don't get in your way!).

Tuolumne has much more to offer a Trad climber. And has cooler temps, less tourists, and just plain rules. [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2002-04-02 04:21 ]

I'd go with Tuolomne. Fewer Tourons and the Yostapo (rangers) are much friendlier there because of that.

I'm down, I think. I was planning a trip to the Needles around July 4th but maybe I can blow off work for a few more days and make it up to Tuolumne, or rearrange the Needles trip for later in the season. Or both Would be nice to climb Snake Dike w/my girlfriend and try some harder (10ish) stuff in the Valley, or some of the longer alpine routes up in Tuolumne (3rd pillar of Dana, etc.). OTOH I really want to make it to the Needles, but I think my partners (as currently set) are pretty flexible about that. If you roll down to 99 from the south entrance to the park you could probably be in the Needles in 2.5 to 3.5 hours but if you get caught behind an RV you up that estimate to 2.5 to 3.5 days The only thing that bugs me about Tuolumne is that you have to get pretty far into the backcountry before you can stop hearing those f---ing cars whizzing by! Otherwise the Needles would be superfluous.

Yosemite Creek campground is halfway between The Valley and The Meadows... It's a 4 mile drive down a shitty road to the site right next to the river than feeds Yosemite Falls. You cannot hear the cars, it's pretty secluded, and the road keeps out the canned campers. This is where I'll be. rrrADAM

Finalized(ish) the dates, and edited the original post to reflect them. Mark (fiend) will be with me, as he is climbing cross-country with Karen and I starting with The Gunks Gig then spending the better part of the Summer in SoCal at my house. BTW 'jab'... 3rd Pillar Of Dana Mountain is my favorite Grade III so far. It rules, and I'll be doing it again this year. Better to do two double rope raps down and just do the last 5 pitches, as the first two are crap, and the Class 4 descent to the base sucks. rrrADAM

I want to remind everyone who is going to the Yosemite gathering about the ASCA. The ASCA has replaced over 1,127 bad bolts and anchors in The Valley and another 254+ in Tuolumne Meadows. The ASCA is an all volunteer organization that depends on contributions from climbers to continue their effort. rrrAdam has graciously volunteered to host a 'collection jar' in which all of the money donated by you will go to the ASCA as a group contribution from rockclimbing.com. Just browsing through and caught the reference to ASCA....kewel....I occasionally climb with Greg(ASCA) and any donations to the cause is money well spent. I definitely like being on good solid bolts!

Due to a promotion at my "real" job at Bally's (to Personal Trainer) I may be able to have more time off now. So look for me in the Meadows during this time. Anyone from So Cali looking for a ride (4-5 days +/- max for me) please PM me since my car doesn't get the best mpg (even though it is a 1990 Toyota Camry) and I don't like to waste gas if we can carpool. There is plenty of room for 2 with wall gear and food, or 3 with free climbing gear and food. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag "I don't pay to sleep on dirt."
