I live in Los Angeles. I want to get into climbing and rapelling, but I am not sure where and how to start. I have some experience in the Army. I would like to know a few places that I could go to and the type of equipment to get. I was also hoping to find some people to give me a some pointers on techniques.

Also, there is nothing more important than getting good instruction so that you are really safe. if you plan on climbing outdoors, find a partner and take a rock climbing 101 course and a top roping course.

Just have a look around the beginners forum. You'll find here all the informations you need. The best thing is still just start and practice. I started with a friend which was allready climbing for about 2 years. And he thought me everything about safety etc. And now I'm trying to improve my technique skills.
Hope you enjoy it and ROCK ON!!

Technique I belive will come with time. You can only get so much technique from reading I assume that you just have to see what works best for you Hell use your teeth if it helps you climb better. As far as gear goes I will give you the advice that was given to me don't go out and spend to much money untill you know your going to like it because it can get expencive.

I'm pretty new to all this myself, but you came to a great spot for answers. Like everyone else has said, walk your way through the forums, and be safe.

As far as my little tid bit of information, I started out bouldering. It's a great way to learn different holds, moves and so on with out putting yourself in as much danger for a bad fall or something. It's also a great way to start working on the parts of the body that really get hammered on when climbing.

Last but not least - Enjoy the ride, it's a wild one!

I have to agree with mtngeo. I spent time in the Army and went through Airborne and Ranger school. The Army's goal is to get you down as quick as possible and their methods are not the most safety conscious.

In the sport climbing community safety and enjoying yourself are the main focuses. To start I'd take an intro class at a local gym or have an experienced climber that you may know give you an intro. See how you feel about it before you go out and buy all sorts of equipment and gear. IMHO, when you're starting off you should not focus too much on technique...your primary focus should be to develop a comfort level and to get used to the way climbing feels.

Have fun.

Isn’t climbing it self-scary? That’s one of the reasons I do it. So rapping is scary? Then I want to do it even more YES YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING. And just don’t get too comfortable; don’t let go of the rope. Gloves help me and tie a knot in the end to be double triple safe. BUT DON’T BE SCARED TO DO IT JUST KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING BEFORE DOING IT OFF OF THE SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN WITH SHARP ROCKS AT THE BOTTOM AND TRIPPLE CHECK YOUR GEAR AND YOURSELF BEFORE YOU TAKE THE PLUNGE.

zoerc,

I am also getting back into climbing and just went through a great intro class in Santa Monica. The gym is called Rockreation, the instructors knew their stuff and made the class fun. They also offer more advanced classes, give them a call: 310-207-7199 or check them out on the web at: www.rockreation.com
