Check out Electric City (in Schenectady) as well. I live in Troy and though E-City is twice as far (about 25 minutes) its soooo much better than AIR that i havent been to AIR in more than 3 years.

E-city is nearly twice as tall for the routes section, and the bouldering area is bigger, and for the final kicker they actually wash their holds occasionally so they dont feel like they are covered in crisco.

Electric City looks pretty sweet (from their website). How many TRs are there? From the pictures online, the main wall doesn't look all that wide.
I used to climb at both AIR and Rocksport, but haven't lived in the area for a number of years now.

8-10 top ropes. The wall is sweet, Enterprize or similiar manufactured wall with features. Andy does a great job with the place. no bullshit, just climb. Routes are set hard and consistant. Place is clean and well lit. Drop a line if you ever want to check it out.

Dude, I gotta comment on AIR: You haven't been there in three years, there's an entire new room devoted to all kinds of incredible routes...and the cave...last night people were there doing a balance walk while my friend and I were leading the ceiling...

Check it out. I go to E City too, and it's cool, but there's a place for both, especially if you like to lead. AIR rocks.

Nah, AIR is really bad. I've lived in the Albany area till I went to college this year. AIR is devoted to kids parties and other crap, in general they care very little about climbers and never take the time to set new routes and improve the climbing. Ive climbed there, have friends who climbed there, and set for competitions there....trust me go to electric city instead.

At e-ctiy they pay much more attention to the quality of climbing, and care more about the actual climbers that go there. Plus there is generally a much better climbing atmosphere.

You know, you make a verygood point. Kids and families really shouldn't climb and they do screw up an otherwise good climbing atmosphere. That's why Electric City never has kid parties...(I was under the impression Andy had regular kid parties).

Thanks for the reminder that we adult gym climbers are special. I'll tell that to my daughter the next time she redlines a 5.8 in the Gunks. She's ten by the way, been climbing at AIR, Electric City, the Wichitas and the Gunks since she was five.

I gotta change my tone. If you climb, you are cool.

I like both gyms, I also like the gym in Rutland VT and in Queensbury. They are all nice and friendly. Larger city gyms can be impersonal and we are fortunate to have four good gyms relatively close by.

AIR is owned by some great people, Dennis and Manny. They are hard men who lead trad, including island caves outside the US. I met Jim years ago when he worked at AIR, and had several wonderful experiences climbing multipitch in NH with him. He's a guide now with EMS in the Gunks. I used to watch Jim lead the ceiling, now I do it myself.

Electric City is equally cool. I first discovered it before it opened up, and Andy is the best. I turned all my friends onto the gym as soon as he opened. Back in the day, I used to marvel at people who could lead the routes there. Now I lead some of them myself.

My point is, rather than say one is better and the other is crap, let's just enjoy what each gym offers, and let people choose for themselves where they want to go. Some people like me might like going to both of them.

I apologise for my tone, because you are probably just another cool climber, trying to have a good time.

Just like the rest of us, young and old, experienced and fresh to the sport.

Climb on!

Jules
