is a 13 yr old according to my gym my local gym recently revoked the membership of 13 year old climber and his family members because they felt he had the potential to steal business from their gym. for 3 years, this kid was on their competitive climbing team, paying monthly dues and coaching fees and this summer he earned spots on the USA jr boulder team and the USA difficulty team. he is the only kid from this gym to do this, and he's gotten some publicity for the gym and some sponsors. the coach left, and the gym hired another gym employee to take over coaching duties. however, this kid climbed at a higher level than the coach, and decided to be coached privately by a usa team coach. he brought the new coach to the gym one night, and some of the kids from the gym's team wanted to climb with them and some of the parents were there and wanted opinions from this coach on their kid's potential. it was not recruiting by the coach, and the coach was comped admission to the gym and was not banned. none of the gyms' kids left their climbing team, but the gym manager felt that it could happen and now other kids are being threatened with banning too if they decide to change. a student membership is about $100 cheaper a month than the membership/coaching package. there was no warning at all. the family received a letter informing them while the kid was representing the usa team in mexico city, and the letter did not say why, the family had to call the gym manager who said "she didn't feel his presence in the gym was conducive to the gym's team program". usa climbing got involved and the gym had to change there decision to allow this kid to attend comps there, but now i've heard that this kid is climbing at another gym in another state and doesn't plan to compete anymore since he can't climb with his buds i am afraid to say anything at the gym because there aren't any others in my area and i don't want to get banned too

This was recently discussed on http://www.norope.com Thread link here That thread was eventually locked because of the unsubstantiated mud slinging and partisan viewpoints that were being shown there. I am an aquaintance of the gym manager, the head routesetter, the previous coach, and the climber in question. I am also a volunteer with USA Climbing, being a Regional Coordinator, and a member of their Rules Committee, the Judging Committeee, and the Olympic Committee. As such, I will be watching this thread very carefully. Any personal attacks or blatant untruths will be deleted; none of these people need to be bashed publically on the web by someone with an agenda. I would appreciate the original poster sending me a PM to identify themselves if they feel this is unfair.

I've been involved with indoor climbing gyms professionally and recreationally for almost ten years now. The amount of drama I've witnessed is akin to the entire televised history of Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless and All My Children all rolled into one. And if there's one thing I've learned, it's that there's always two sides to each "episode". If there's two things I've learned, then the second is that the drama unfolding is rarely, if ever, as dramatic as those closest to it make it seem. I'd be intersting in hearing the gym's version of this... if it were any of my business... which it isn't.

It's not that I'm unsympathetic. I've been the victim of injustice myself, and it's so unjust. But every time I see the topic headline, I think to myself: the most radical surfer in oklahoma Good luck to the little climber dude.

Interesting thread - hadn't a clue to these types of issues in the climbing world. I suppose it's the world of Government Contracting that I am more akin to .... but that's not fun ;) especially when you're told to stop climbing the partitions, filing cabinets and the like

Coaches, teams, competition, isn't what its about. I like climbing because there are no coaches and teams, I push myself for me with my friends. The only "coaching" is beta from the older guys not going to the gym and training with a team like a high school sport. If you ask me (i know you're not) that sucks. The beauty of climbing is being able to push yourself by yourself or with others, no coaches to tell you what to do. Sounds a little stupid to make climbing into a business like baseball and basketball. Hopefully thats not where its heading.

Rispo, does the fact that they give Olympic medals for baseball prevent you from getting together with the boys for a friendly game of beerball at the local park? Apples and oranges, my friend. Everyone finds different reasons why climbing appeals* to them, and chooses their own approach. I don't think any of the competition climbers would say that your definition is less worthy than theirs. * The use of the word "appeals" had nothing to do with the previous apples and oranges reference...

who cares? edit: the lack of coaches and orgonized stuff is why i love climbing, this kinda stuff seems to kill the sport i love. also, these are the kindsa things get a bad rep for our sport. Just go out (OUT!) and climb, and have some fun.
