What would you consider yourself in terms of climbing experience? Beginner
Intermediate
Advanced
Expert
I would probably consider myself intermediate because I can climb around 5.9's and been climbing about a year and a half. What about the rest of you?

You left off my favorite category-- idiot. I consider myself to be at the idiot level of climbng, surviving by luck over and over. There is a lot of luck in climbng, if there weren't people would die every week, cause there are a lot of us idiots out there, doing idiotic things on a regular basis, and we don't even know it.

aid never touched it, yet
boulder only when i can't find arope, lol.
And thats all relitive to whom you compare it to? To an old hardman I'm a complete and newbie at everything and shouldn't even say anything.

I would consider you a noob for saying that. You can climb 5.10's for 3 years in a gym and you would still be a noob if that's all you know.

Im not sure there are ever definite levels of climbing. One reason is that the grade of climb is so smooth in the ratings (youre never quite sure if its accurate) and the rating scale is subjective to opinions of climbers. And Id rather rate based on knowledge rather than on difficulty of the climbs. Me? Ill always be a "noob" because Im always learning, always getting the knowledge that improves me. And hey, ill always be worse than someone.

I'd say idiot falls between beginner and intermediate. A true intermediate climber has learned through the school of hard knocks and near misses that they don't know nearly as much as they think they do. They also know that 5.9 is a pretty wicked grade in many parts of the country and being solid on 5.9, or 5.11 for that matter, in the gym in no way prepares you for them. A true beginner climber knows they know nothing and isn't ashamed to admit it. An idiot knows just enough to get themselves in real trouble.
Most climbers cease to be climbers in the idiot stage, either through attrition, or disintrest. Most of us that make it through muddle forever as intermediate climbers. Few have the time to ever manage true "advanced" status. Fewer still are true "experts". The former demands a substantial portion of one's free time for quite a lot of years. The latter demands having little life outside of climbing for a very great number of years. When you meet such people learn all you can from them about climbing, and take everything else they say with a grain of salt.
Personally I've been at this game for 7 years and I feel I am just beginning to scrape the beginning of "intermediate". I've broken some bones climbing and come back, done virtually all forms of rock climbing except big wall, managed family life, work, friends, etc all to climb. I consider myself solid on 5.8 which I am slightly proud of. (and by "solid" I mean I've got better than a 95% chance of climbing any 5.8 under any conditions). I've put up routes, travelled, met a few really cool people.
And I'm still impressed by how bad I am and how little I know. There a lot of kids out there who can climb circles around me, but that's cool, a lot of them freak on 80' runouts. So do I, I should point out. But I know that from experience. At the end of the day I'll buy them a beer and we'll laugh about how scary that shiz was, and be amazed at the real hardmen who get scared on 5.13 and not 5.7.

Thats what I was trying to ask in the first place...I just added what I could climb as well. I just was trying to see what everyone on rc.com would consider themselves. so idiot is inbetween beg. and int. and so I think I'm in that category cause I know I'll always be learning stuff about climbing, I know I don't know everything. How about everyone else?

I am an advanced beginner. I climb 5.10 if i am really really working it. I have done many multipitch and trad climbs and have all the knowledge for rock climbing except big wall. but my skills are only 5.10 so i am an advanced beginner.

hmmm thats really hard to say. there are plenty of older climbers that are way experienced and have everything mastered, but just climb 5.6. then their is the opposite, young guns who crank way hard but dont know much about the sport.
e.g. : there are probably lots of climbers who climb 5.12, but coulnt even tell u who bachar is. does this make them more of an expert then someone who has a treasure chest full of climbing knowledge but doesnt climb that hard?
without that distinction, its impossible to say.

When I die of old age, then I think I can safely say that I have gone past the beginner stage of climbing.
When someone experienced says that I have forgotten more than they have ever learned about climbing, I will possibly feel like I am not a beginner.
I don't mind being a beginner for the next 40+ years of (hopefully) safe climbing. I think always considering myself a beginner will leave me open to absorbing all the knowledge I can, and will help me to keep my ego out of the way of learning.
Well, at least that's what I'm hoping.
So yeah, I'm a beginner. Hopefully, one day I can write a book about it. ;)

I've been climbing for 5 years, I lead trad @ 5.10 I do a little mountaneering and aid climbing. I have a fair bit of training and knowledge from ACMG guides, books and more experianced friends. I also Have rope and cravase rescue training etc.
I would class my self as a skilled beginner. Sadly, most people would lump me into a 'Higher class". What I know now is that I have much More to learn Also the more I think I know the less I'm open to learn and that scares me. Maybe in another 5 years I'll call my self and experianced climber

I am at the advanced level of the beginner category of the intermediate class of climber. I also consider myself an idiot, which I believe lies outside and independent of the other categories. I have been climbing for 12 years now, and I know very little comparatively. But a wise man once said that true intelligence lies in realizing how much we do not know.

5.8 under any conditions. I can think of some nasty weather and exposure (and perhaps a touch of ice) that would make for interesting conditions. I believe this shows the inherent flaw in designating yourself as a 5.something climber. When someone says they are a 5.something climber they really havn't told you anything. 5.8 on a little boulder? over a mat? at their home crag? on some foriegn rock after a 2000 mile drive? High in a mountain range they didnt even know existed a couple months ago?
There are people who have knowledge that can far surpass your own yet climb many grades easier. The hardest part about climbing is finding those who know what you dont and are willing to share that information.

Expert.
Not because I climb 5 billions but because i grew up around climbing. I know it, I love it. Ive seen just about every situation one could find himself in. Although I do come across things that I find new and intresting.
