I'm just reading this book on ice climbing and these people (Joe Simpson, Simon Yates)'s life-threatening experiences, and their will to go on, and I'd like to know what you more experienced climbers thought about this piece of climbing literature.

I've heard Tom Cruise's production company bought the film rights to Touching the Void. You may see the movie one of these days.

It's an incredable Unbelieveable true story that makes me wish I had the money and experience to climb high in the snow/ice. Travel, climb untouched faces, sleep in some snow holes, NOT break my knee! All this book did to me was seal my fate: to save the money I need for the American Alpine Instute first ascent program!

True story. I thought the book was very well written. It made me think alot about climbing, why people do it, and what makes human beings survive against the odds.
I keep a copy of the book next to my copy of "Freedom of the Hills".

I read this book at the airport on the way to Utah. I got a bit lost in some of the moutaineering jive. There was a glossery in the back which was helpful. Over all it was an quick and fun read. I did burst into laughter once he reached base camp... God if it were not for the fact that he wrote the book I would have thought he would never make it.

It's an excellent book. You should check out his second book This Game of Ghosts. Another great read. Joe Simpson has lots of luck. Good luck getting himself out of the bad luck variety.

I agree, both books are CLASSIC mountaineering literature, and should be in any climbers library. Amazing how one man can escape the GRIM REAPER that many times in his life...

I own both books and like Simpson as an author. Touching the void tells an amazing tale but it was This Game Of Ghosts that really struck a chord with me as he tries to identify his motivations for a ludicrous activity. He also manages to introduce some great and humourous stories throughout the book in a disjointed way.

I agree...Game of Ghosts goes a long way toward a good hard look at what we do and why we do it...I loved the introduction of the "deep play" concept, where risk far outweighs any potential of reward...
