I needed to replace my old seive tent with something lighter and more versatile and of course affordable. I finally settled on the MSR Trekker Tarp (older version in tan). I immediately set it up in my basement and was very impressed. I can imagine it to be a good addition to a shallow snow cave/trench. Although I have not yet used it much, I have the following comments...
Pros:
Versatile setup - mesh insert alone, tarp alone, or both. Nothing beats watching the sunset under the awning and it offers plenty of gear storage space in the ends.
Adjustable Height - the height of the tarp can be raised or lowered to allow more or less space between the tarp and ground
Weight - the full rig weights around 4 lbs and even less when you leave either part at home.
Cons:
Price - the newer (lighter by 1 lb.) version costs around $280, but I got my older version for $130. But then again, it's still cheaper than most quality tents.
Final Comments:
This is a good choice for those that like to go light with just the tarp or but still want your city-slicker friends to come along by offering the mesh insert.
