Description:

This route follows the gash just to the right of the East Butress. It is a fun, scrambling route that lies under the towering blocks of the East Butress route. There are several bouldery options along the walls of the route. Upon reaching the notch, if you go directly up to the left, there is some good soloing to be had. Early season this climb is snow and ice with some solid ice on the north face of Whitney above the notch.

5 out of 5 stars Mtneers Route

Spectacular climb, the low amount of snow last season made conditions on the route near perfect.

2 out of 5 stars Absolute shit in Summer

This seems like it would be fun in good snow pack, but when dry, it's just a mess. You basically have the option of scrambling up loose rock and scree or soloing Class 4 and sometimes 5 sections. Either way, it's very exposed and dangerous. A slip is easily fatal in some parts. On the last stretch to the summit, after the notch, it's VERY important to stay left if there is no snow. The right looks safer from below, but those big "sturdy" rocks are actually very loose, and footholds are covered with dust/dirt and very slippery. Also, be very wary of climbers above you. I saw one guy come very close to getting hammered by a 20 pound rock someone above him accidentally kicked loose.
