Ascent Notes for: Cables Route - 5.4 Average Rating : 4.50/5

Really fun route, super easy and a quicker way to the top than the Keyole route. We had a bit of an adventure though on our ascent, but still faster... Half the route was covered in snow so we went up the side to a ledge, set up an anchor and then traversed across the snow in hiking boots. We also climbed the route in boots too with no problem.

This was a great first Alpine Technical climb for my brothers and I. We avoided Snow and Ice by climbing a crack system to the left of the actual cable route, but I would rate it a 5.4 also. We decended the Keyhole route to check it out since we have never climbed Longs Peak before.

Simul-Free solo with Bob. Opted for this route when we reached Chasm view too late and too tired for a likely success on the Diamond.

End of November can be a pretty brutal season for this route. There were a few sections of snow when we climbed, thin ice every now and then; the temperature got to around -5F with no sun on the route - it's a _north_ face. We only got to the top by around 4pm. The descent through Keyhole was not as trivial as the descriptions promised: huge exposure at the beginning and the rock covered by a thin layer of fresh snow. Overnight the wind got so bad that it broke poles in two 4-season tents on the Boulder field.
