Description

This is a auto locking belay device similar to the grigri but with more safety features. From Website Eddy is the perfect belaying device for sport climbing for either novice or the experienced climber. The Eddy doesn't need much explanation and in simplicity is safety. Easy to thread, the rope follows logically the rope flow. A controlled descent with an emergency break system eliminates the "panic pull" syndrome which can lead to serious accidents. The Eddy provides maximum safety whether top roping or lead climbing with easy paying out of rope to the leader. Can be used for single ropes with diameters from 9 to 11 mm.

Great to borrow... 4 out of 5 stars

...tough to buy. This device works great. The only problem with it is the price. Now that the Gri Gri 2 is here, however, that price is a big hurdle to jump over.

Bought the Edelrid Eddy after a long watch, catch all the lead and top roped sport climbing with the Beal 10.2 mm Flyer & Beal 10.5 mm Top gun. It even catch the lead rope soloing with my Beal 10.2 mm Flyer. Use GriGri for a long time and have the Cinch also, but like the Eddy most. Didn't have any feeding problem with all those devices, it just a matter of method & practice. Test it with the Beal 9 mm Verdon and Singing Rock 8.3 mm Accord and lock without hesitation, although it rate for 9 mm to 11 mm ropes. The downside is it weight, but it is a minor issue for the sport climb. Besides, it need a HMS biner, all the D not fit very well, mine is DMM Belay Master.

Edelrid Eddy 1 out of 5 stars

I am a fairly experienced climber, of a few years, who regularly climbs upper 5.10 sport routes, and 5.8+ YNP rated trad climbs. I climb with sub 10mm ropes, and decided that the Eddy was hopefully better than the Grigri for this size of rope. In a sport setting, while watching my climbing partner, fall, the Eddy failed to engage the internal locking cam until far too late. I made the mistake of thinking it was predominantly rope-stretch that caused his close-call. On a recent trip to Yosemite, my climbing partner took a 15 foot+ whipper, and again, the Eddy did not engage until far-too close to the belay point, where I was. I noticed my fingers were burned after reviewing what had happened, and that it was mostly me holding on, and employing a correct stance with the rope that slowed my partners fall. I used the device according to manufacturers instructions, but for anyone looking for a good device, try the SUM!

The Edelrid Eddy while pricey is a great locking belay device. It takes a couple of climbs to get used to, but is super easy to use and the features a great. After using this device the GriGri feels cheap. I would give it a 5 but the price brings it down to a 4.
