Carabiner is a metal hoop with either a spring loaded or screwed gate and can be made from aluminum or steel. They are designed to attach the rope to an anchor, and connect two ropes, or for other climbing equipment to be inserted or removed quickly.
There are two main categories of carabiners, these include locking and non-locking carabiners. Locking carabiners have a screwed gate which will only allow the gate to open if positioned correctly. Whereas the non-locking carabiner has a spring loaded gate which snaps back into place after something is pushed through it. There are different types of gates available for both categories including bent gates, wire gates, and straight gates, which are designed to allow equipment to be clipped in more easily.
Quickdraws also fall in this section, they are two carabiners connected by a short rope, which is typically used to connect your rope to a bolt when lead climbing.
