Mountaineering has a long history in Japan, in one form or another, whether it be a form of religious devotion, dating back many centuries, or the late 19th century exploration of early ex-patriots, like the Englishman Walter Weston who opened up the Northern Japanese Alps to recreational alpine climbing, so there are plenty of alpine routes to find; but rock routes can be more difficult to find and it often requires a combination of insider beta and dogged persistance with Japanese climbing guides to find the best spots.
Rock-climbing in Japan continues to be quite popular but most activity, like most of the modern climbing world, is centered on indoor gyms, of which there are many.
The Japan routes area at the moment doesn't reflect anywhere near the number or variety of routes that are out there waiting to be climbed. Your submissions are greatly appreciated.
