Boulering by the sun, sand and surf. Located on the southern Gulf of Thailand, Koh Tao (Turtle Island) is located north of its more famous sisters Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. The bouldering on Koh Tao was first developed by Zen Gecko in 1996. Zen Gecko used to be the climbing school on the island but they closed down in 2006, likewise their bouldering guide is very outdated as a tourism boom has resulted in resorts being built on most of the boulder areas and problems. A new venture called Good Time Adventures has established a number of routes on one rock complex on the island and another group of ex-pat locals have established another complex on private land; so at present there are two bolted (top roping) complexes here. More areas are being developed.
All land on Koh Tao is owned privately as opposed to the government. The locations of the routes are on private land and Good Time Adventures has a non-exlusive agreement with the land owners on their usage. It is advisable for visitors to work through Good Time Adventures.
