ILLINOIS
Illinois is fast gaining notice on the radar screen of climbers and boulderers around the country.
There is a lifetime -a couple of lifetimes- of stone to enjoy in the southern part of the state. The best part of climbing in the region, bouldering, sport, trad, in a full range of difficulty, is found in destinations that are all just minutes from each other. Jackson Falls is the premier climbing area in southern Illinois, for routes and for bouldering. The best and highest trad routes, along with a great variety of high quality sport routes, are only minutes away at Drapers Bluff, and Cedar Bluff. Nearby is another good and popular crag, and camping area, Ferne Clyffe State Park.
A list of recommended routes for the southern Illinois area is available.
To the north is Mississippi Palisades, where a climber can enjoy the area year-round, including ice-climbing, and Starved Rock for ice climbing.
| The Illinois Climbers Association is an ad-hoc non-profit organization of and for climbers. The ICA seeks to have a voice in management decisions with regard to climbing in Illinois. Please observe and respect the wishes of land owners and managers, as well as the ethical standards of the area you are visiting. It will benefit everyone, and make the ICA -and climbers in general- more respected as members of the land management community. |
(As of 4-21-03, some Areas have been deleted due to concern over sensitive access issues. The ICA, The Access Fund, and local climbers will continue to work for climbers interests where and when possible. Until and unless access is open and public, closed and restricted areas will be deleted from this database.)
