Black Mountain

Many short (25-35ft)top rope climbs. Bring lots of spare webbing for topropes. Often the trees are 30-40 feet from the top of the climb, and there is no other option for anchors.

A bouldering scene is slowly developing here, some hard problems are slowly going up. If you are a hardcore boulderer come on up, and try to bag a couple of FA's.

The rock here is a conglomerate sandstone-small cobble, that can be hard on the hands. It is solid, however, and provides great friction.

This is a good area to bring beginners, just make sure that all toprope anchors are equalized and redundant. The short wall, easy hike in and moderate climbing make for an easy day of climbing.

Pick up some trash if you see any. Help keep access open.

Your not suppose to camp there, if you do be careful, there are rangers that stop by about 2 times a day
Nearest town or city: Crab Orchard

From Knoxville take I-40 west. About 45 minutes from the city take the Crab Orchard exit, and head south. The road turns sharply around a right corner after less than a quarter mile. Stay on this road for about 2 miles (aprox.) until you come to a fork in the road. Take the LEFT fork. You will go up the mountain passing a big wooden Methodist Church sign that says Black Mountain on it. Continue up the hill until the road deadends at a GIANT FREAKING FAA tower. Park in the small lot, and take the path to the left. After about 2 minutes you will be to the bluff.

For access to some of the bolders and bluffs lower on the mountain look for a small dirt path (4x4 nessessary) on the left of the road about 1/8 of a mile down from the FAA tower. Take this road through a creek and past some old stone chimneys and house foundations. As soon as you see rock on your right park on the side of the path and start walking. These bolders and bluffs are not in any guide book, and I'm sure that some of the stuff I climb down there has never been touched before.
