Since this is a special trip (i.e. - not weekend warrior stuff), I'm starting a new thread for this trip report. Getting there is half the adventure (part one) is the first of three posts in the "getting there" mini-series. There will probably be four or five "days in Moab" posts after this is over.

I've actually been and gone. This is the recap of my 10 days out there. Too bad I didn't know in advance, though. There's a slight possibility that Sungam is still there. He was at the Williams campground on Potash Rd when I left.

As always... a great read GMB! Hope the ankle is well on the mend. I've torn ligaments in both my ankle/feet (at different times from completely un-climbing-related reasons) and know how horrible it is not being able to jam them when you want to.

And yeah, torqueing my ankle was the hardest thing to do for a while. I climbed for the first time (i.e. - not aid) this weekend and the ankle was 99% OK, but I've lost a lot of strength. I went down in Feb fighting 11s and stood back up this weekend struggling up 5.8+.

Well I must say Sunny boy seams to be getting out climbing, but very little blogging w/ photos to prove it. Either way, looking forward to your next update and photos of moab-RR-joes. Speaking of which, I need to get off the dime and get a digital camera. The wife wanted one for our anniversary. I had one picked out. All set to order it. Then she got all picky. Will it do this that the other. Yes. Yes. Yes. Plus xyz. Well she didn't know, its not what she was thinking, Bla bla bla. And the idea got shoved to the back burner. So I'm just going to get me one, and she can use it if she likes it too. Good job on the write ups. Keep em coming.

Yeah, Jeremiah has a great way of putting things sometimes. I've just finished the first draft of the next post (hope to have it up for tomorrow), and he's got another good one-liner regarding the wire size of micronuts. I've got to edit it, though, and that will have to happen tonight when I can put more focus on it (i.e. - not at work )

Alright! We're finally on to the climbing. Learning to Aid and Jello's big day is up to read. One part of the post I forgot to mention is how I met Sungam. I was aiding Skeletonic when I saw this guy walking around in his boxers. He was sopping wet because he thought it would be easier to swim with the Colorado River-current than to walk back to his campsite. Seriously, he was just walking up to people while in his boxers and starting up conversations. He never even noticed the wild looks and stares. And I've never met a guy who waves at everyone more than him. He was a treat to meet.

There's a lot of climbing out there; endless, it seems. There's probably one more post, and then maybe a follow-up from a return trip that "Jello" did recently on top of that (after I left). I'm working on the last couple of days right now, but I have to wait for him to send me his stuff. He did all the climbing on the last day, but Sungam and I did a lot of pushing, and of course my flight out bookends my flight in nicely. Thanks for reading folks! This series really attracted a lot of you.

Yeah, it really does look like a great place to head to.... not sure where on the list it is for us, but Fisher towers could be to come! You guys did do some good climbing too.... I was just ribbing you after reading that comment from Jello about "guiding" you guys up the last bit. Heh!! You may have not known it was me but I commented on one of the earlier blogs in this series.

You are a weirdo douchebag. Not really I was just getting frustrated from having failed so horribly and was unnecessarily pinning my frustrations on other people because of the little things they were doing that I wouldn't have noticed if we would have gotten up and down without incident. Just goes to show you, everyone can be friendly when the climbing is fun and "safe" but when things get hard and aren't going well then you see what people are really like. Both of you guys did well putting up with me. I can be a bit of an asshole. Thanks.

The final "push" is now up for reading. This chronicles our final day in Moab and the interesting bookend to my vacation (hint: think about the first few posts of the series). There will probably be an epilogue from Jello. He returned the following weekend without me and had an interesting time with his friend "Utah," whom he and I had climbed with briefly in the 'Daks a few summers earlier. But for now, enjoy...

Very well done. Another fine read. Couple thoughts on push starting w/ a dead battery. I've done it in reverse gear too. So if you're forward in an uphill parking spot that will work. I've always had the key turned to "on" before starting to push, so that all I need to do is pop the clutch when up to speed.

So the final series begins. This is the first part of Jeremiah's triumphant return to tackle the classic Castleton Tower. Going back is yet another battle The first few lines: "- "Utah": Hey dude bra, I'm in Vegas and heading to the Creek soon. Give me a call and we'll meet up to do something gnar in the desert. After listening to the message I knew I'd go back. How could I resist? The last time was a blast, the weather was prime and I hadn't climbed with "Utah" since we worked together just south of Poke 'O Moonshine in the 'Daks. There was just one small problem, I still couldn't get my car to start."

donald949 wrote: I've always had the key turned to "on" before starting to push, so that all I need to do is pop the clutch when up to speed. From eHow, How to push start a car: http://www.ehow.com/..._push-start-car.html Step 1 Make sure that the problem is either the battery or the starter: If the engine cranks ("rrr-rrr-rrr") when you turn the key, then the problem isn't the starter or the battery. Step 2 Plan to have at least one person sitting in the driver's seat and one person pushing. Mid-size and large cars require two or three people to push, depending on the strength of the people and whether or not the car is parked on an incline. Step 3 Turn off all accessories (radio, wipers, lamps). Step 4 Turn the key to the "on" position. Step 5 Depress the clutch pedal with your foot. Step 6 Put the transmission in first or second gear. Step 7 Release the hand brake and the foot brake. Step 8 Note that the people pushing need to get the car rolling as fast as they can. This works best down a hill or an incline. Step 9 Release the clutch pedal while giving the engine a little gas with the gas pedal once the car is moving about as fast as you can run. The engine should start. And some tips from wikiHow: Tips * The reason that it is usually best to push start it in second gear is because it will be a far smoother start with less of a jolt, so there is less wear on the clutch and transmission. However, if you only have a short distance to push start the car in, or you don't have much speed, first gear may be better. * If this doesn't work the first time, give it another shot and let it get going a little faster before you pop the clutch. * Release the clutch very quickly; if you ease it out, your engine will not start.

Alright there you go, a blow by blow account of ehow to. Anyrate, it also works in reverse. But it doesn't work on my 7000 pound Suburban.

He 3/4 pushed on our drive back. I was driving and I helped him to start the car. I then jumped in the car and popped the clutch. That works if you're by yourself. Although being on a slight down hill helps so you don't slow down to much as you jump in the car... just make sure you don't trip, face plant into the open door, belly flop onto the ground and watch the car roll faster and faster away from you.

My chalkbag was closed that day. Not much use with the rock being dusty, muddy, crap.

I haven't been there, but in general the rock in that part of the country is red orange in color due to its high iron oxide (rust) content. So the rock under the surface layer of rust, can be another color. Apparently it was white at that spot. That would have freaked me out too. So maybe it was chalk...

In reply to: Step 6 Put the transmission in first or second gear. Wrong! Guess they've never done it much. The engine will turn more times and easier at slower speeds if you push, than pop the clutch in third or fourth gear. In 1st or 2nd you'll get maybe one, two turns on the engine usually followed by a screech from the tires not turning any more from the resistance created from lower gears. Don't use first and depending on the gearing don't use second either. edited for clarity

OK, so it took a while, but here it is: The Final Day. While there may be other Moab posts in the future, this is the final post of the epilogue. Jeremiah and "Utah" went back up to take on Fine Jade on the last day of the weekend.
