Look at the front page photo. At any given time you could see a pic of a young woman pullin' down. And that usually means you'll see a rambling list of slavering comments from the menz around here. They barely lift their little pink snouts out of the trough to utter a "scwhing, I love climber chicks!!!1"

Want to be the spotter? You can't even see these girls' FACES, just backs. I point this out and the oinkers scoff at me. Nice.
Handstand How many men on this site have scabby knuckles?! God, this one rotated on the FP and the only point of interest was a sports bra and a midriff. Not climbing, not emotion, not composition. Just flesh, period.

I am a bit surprised that the one of Rachel Robinson on Mentor has stayed relatively mild, but the comments could go south at any moment...
I am not exactly uptight about complimenting women- I HAVE been the subject of a thread debating MY "hotness." I am not bitter on account of being a weak, squishy-bodied, busted-face wannabe (other things are wrong with me, they're just in other areas ;) ) I am not a raging, testicle-smashing feminist (for sake of argument, this is to be a bad thing) But it's obvious that these women, many of whom are stronger than almost ANY of the others on this site will ever be, are not being given due credit for their talents. They're being cheapened, objectified, because they have nice bits. Yeah, some of them ARE cute (or just got caught in a complimentary moment) but what does that have to do with their CLIMBING or the photographer's skill? Nothing. But the tone of these comments clearly make it sound like the main thing worth mentioning are their looks.
It makes me uncomfortable, and I am fairly unflappable (I mean, I know Pete personally... c'mon! :P) I am embarrassed for the girls in the drool (and other fluids...)-soaked photos, and frankly, don't care to submit photos of myself anymore because I'd rather not risk the catcalls. Even I have gotten them, and I am no 5.12 and skimpy top type- so this just shows that some guys here will spank it to ANYthing! well, ok, self-depricating aside, the tone is still so consistantly slimy; one "hey, that's a nice pic of you" is ok, but that's not the case around here. It's not so benign- it's more crass, or at least lame.
And it's getting old... actually, it's been old for a long time.
How do you think the mods et. al. should approach this quieter but omnipresent form of sexism?
(and a disclaimer- I do not wish to be catty or judgmental toward these women. They're just trying to enjoy climbing. It is hardly their fault that a photo of them gets defiled by pigs.)

seriously, though, while the comments on the photo pages get old, the bottom line is that the majority of climbers– and users of this site– are heterosexual males. If given a choice, what is your average hetero-male going to be more stoked on: a picture of Beth Rodden on Sphinx Crack, or a picture of, say, Todd Skinner on the same route. Say all you want about the quality of the CLIMB, or the ATHLETE, or whatever, but the bottom line is that female climbers are a very beautiful thing. yup.

However, and when people post pictures on this website, it is at the mercy of other people on the website, and this includes criticism, compliments, and "catcalling". There are no rules or guidelines about "catcalling". However, if there were, it would be as futile as making it illegal to post negative or unflattering comments.

While people may make gradeschool comments I certainly don't mind the pictures. Don't get me wrong, I like good pictures of guys as well, but a good climbing shot of an attractive woman is a good thing. People are attracted to beauty, been that way for while.

First I consider myself a feminist, who revels in the power we women have. But one of the wonderful (though sometimes a little embarassing) powers we have is to reduce grown men to drooling fools.:lol:
All these women are impressive climbers, out pulling down hard on things some of us can only dream of. That alone makes them Hot. Why not say so. Now that is not to validate silly drooling men, but I like to think most of them are commenting on the fact that they love to see women climbing hard. None of this invalidates the climbing these women are doing, and there are just as many comments if not more on their impressive climbing as on their looks.

It's just about as off-putting as dating someone 15+ years younger than you. :P
Have you looked at a climbing mag lately? Lots of pics of women. A much higher ratio than that I see when I'm at the rocks.
Disgusted by someone's behavior? Hell, you and everyone else on this site. Time to solve the problem by putting the sensitivity police on the case!
By the way, thanks for putting together that nice collection of strong climbers sending hard routes. Inspirational. 8)

Since when does saying "I just had an orgasm," "could she please move her arm down just another inch," "my compliments to her father" or "I wish my second looked like that" have anything constructive to do with CLIMBING, photography, or encouraging women to develop their skills as athletes?
I'd threaten to get all Steinem on yalls arses but I am actually not the most capable of that! :shock: ;)
And there ARE rules here against "catcalling," which is otherwise known as sexual harrassment when elevated to a certain plane.

You're right Hillary. I personally think these guys should shut their mouths. If they said some of those things straight to those girls' faces, they'd most likely get slapped. Keep the comments like that to yourself people. :)
Personally, I've always had a soft spot for girls. ;) For me, it is an admiration and a respect, and I have always tried hard to do nothing that they wouldn't like. I dunno, I guess my parents must have raised me differently, and for that, I tip my hat.

The biological reality is that men are visual creatures, voyeurs if you will. Any normal, healthy heterosexual man will look at those photos and appreciate, shall we say, "the finer points" (as I did). Women in general, IMHO, just don't work the same way on visual stimulation (there are, I'm sure, exceptions).
There was a famous study about three decades ago which found that men think about the female form on average four times a minute. I won't hazard a guess as to what women think about every 15 seconds.
This I believe to be true though: men and women have very different ways of getting to the name of the game - the emotional connection, being loved if you will. Guys think that sex is the emotional connection; for women sex is a way to get to the emotional connection.
Anyhow, there's the biological differences that may go a way to explaining why guys will drool (or drip - I know ewww!) over pix of hot women rock climbing. The issue, it appears, is guys not shy about putting such thoughts in words to images on this site.
The question raised is how the mods should address this issue - if at all. I see the point. For women such comments take away from what for them are just fine climbing photos. My opinion is that there is no need to post such comments. Guys, look, appreciate (or whatever), pm you buddies, but leave it off the site. There's really no need for it. The women in the pix aren't necessarily looking for compliments - this isn't a fashion show.
That said, I don't think it will stop and I don't think it necessarily appropriate for the mods to start removing such comments. Let's at the very least try to practice some discretion.

I don't believe that for a second. I think you were making an inuendo and nothing you say will make me think different. I don't have any problem with it (in fact, I thought it was funny). My point was simply that maybe SOME of the comments are harmless, in the same way yours was. Some are pretty crude and stupid though.

I can see how some people think it's futile or unneccessary or "we can't help it." That's a valid response, even if it's not in line with my ranting, and if that's the majority, well damnation! Guess I would in fact be an idealistic loon ;)

There is a balance here guys. I can see Hillary's point as well as the knuckledraggers :lol: The bottom line is asking for a little sensitivity on the issue cannot hurt.
If we look at the current definition of sexual harrasement, we might eb able to shed a little light on her perspective:

I can see several issues in the above passage that are a good fit:

Hillary has asked "us" as a group to watch what we are saying. There is nothing wrong or objectional in her request. I think we should all take a deep breath and realize she is just asking for us to be a little more sensitive to the issue.
I can live with that, and I hope we are tolerant enough of a group collectively to honor a small request to be alittle more aware of the impact of our statements.

It seems that climbsomething has spawned some hipocritical outrage from a male feminist sympathiser back a few posts. However I am wanting to get some sort of consensus from the ordinary joe blow users of this site as to what they see as acceptable behaviour in the comments field below the pics of hot chicks.
It is now time for Mr., Mrs. and Ms. average user to make their opinion known as this thread will be used as the basis for formulating a loose policy on what to do with some of the more crass comments in the photo comments field.
I cringe at some of the comments posted and feel that it must be driving away the very thing that we all love to see and that is hot chicks pulling down hard on awesome climbs.
If we can all agree on what to do that will help the photo mods do their job more effectively so that there are more pics of chicks doing what we love to see and that is cranking hard with ripped muscles on stellar routes.
Crass comments does nothing to encourage the posting of these sorts of pics.

As far as moderating goes, I'd leave it alone unless the object of the comment complains and asks to have it removed then remove it.
Oh and watch your mouths boys, gross comments do not get you girls.

I was not offended in the least. I actually burst out laughing when I read it. Why? Well because, this man is simply... A moron. There are one of two circumstances with him. Well, three. One, he may be a 40-50 year old male entering his mid-life crisis and doesnt get any anymore so cruises rc.com forums and makes whitty sexists comments to sound like a "big" (straight) man. Second, he is a typical high school idiot moron male who, surprise, doesnt get any, so has to make himself sound like a big "man" on rc.com, wow, similar to one isnt? Third, he is in his 20s-30s and was a huge loser in high school so has to somehow relive it by trying to make it all happen the way he would have liked to by sounding like a fantastic sexist ass. So pathetic. Willing to bet one of them is true though. I am quite straight, have a girlfriend and am basically a typical kid, and I can accept the fact that there is so much more to women then their looks. Why the f*ck cant such a large percentage of the males on this site do so? Grow up.

Hillary, I do believe you're taking some undue offense at the physical compliments you read here in the photos comments. Does it not occur to you that these so-called "catcalls" are really a virtually unanimous expression of admiration and/or approval of women who have made great achievments in physical and mental conditioning? The women we see in these images cannot be realistically viewed by anyone as weak or complacent, and acknoledging their beauty--however clumsily stated that acknowledgment my be--is nothing like whilsting at an aneorexic waif with nice implants. These women aren't "cute" because they fit any chavanistic submissive model; they're truly "hot" because they have earned their good form; they are healthy, powerful athletes, and I find that damned sexy, and damned impressive. I don't see anything wrong with saying that out loud.
Thanks for the thoughtful post and the links to some excellent (and gorgeous) images that I somehow missed.

All right, all needling aside.
I think the fact that these women are climbers is being overlooked by those who are annoyed by some of the comments made. You see, those pictures represent to some, the Ideal Woman.
Its plain to see that they are all physically attractive. What maybe isn't as apparent, is how rare these women are. I imagine most young single guys have tried to get their girlfriends into climbing. Sadly, the joy of climbing doesn't always take in these young women.
Just then, you see a picture of a comely young woman, who is perhaps climbing something harder than you are capable of! Joyous day!
Engaging in the escapism that the internet provides for so many of us, you allow yourself to think, "Wow, what if she was my girlfriend," "Finally, a woman who would be stoked to go climb for 2 weeks," or even "If I could get her to ropegun for me I could die happy!"
Is that last thought objectionable?
Or I could crude it down and post something on that picture.
For me, one of the things I enjoy about those pictures is that to me, women like that Don't Exist.
Self expression is important. If you object to some of the statements, ask yourself, Am I being hurt by this? Or am I just uncomfortable? Is it necessary for me to force my will on someone else?

I don't think CaughtInside is defending "ALL" comments, but rather saying that most of the people truly mean those comments as compliments. I think he presented it well and he also gets an official smiley face for identifying the real issue:
Does the feeling of people reading those comments move from being "uncomfortable" to that of "offended". Is there enough of this issue to consider policing the picture comments for adherence to the ToS just as we do with the Forum Posts?
Currently we delete comments that are VERY unappropriate, but leave ones that border alone. We, as mods, eds, and admins, are feeling out the users for their opinions on how and more importantly how much should we attempt to "moderate" this issue.

I like it when a boyfriend says I look nice, or look hot climbing. But if a stranger says it, I may be suspicious. And depending on how he says it (or types it) I could be flat-out disgusted.
caught, I appreciate your insight as well. I know plenty of (climber) guys are actually sensitive enough to not degrade a woman, and many climber guys also wish they had a sick-strong companion to hang and climb with. I am not sure so many guys are simultaneously deeply respectful yet crass and flip- I mean, some *could* truly be, but they shouldn't have a hard time saying so in a tactful manner, one would hope/think. I don't tend to put too much stock in the connection between crude commentary and sincere awe, but (I hope this isn't being presumptuous) it doesn't sound like you do either.

Look, I hate to say this, but some of the comments in this post have offended me and I feel sexually harassed. You see, someone made a comment that was directed at males and meant to be uncomplimentary, so I feel sexually harassed. First of all, I don't think climbsomething is arguing about the fact that male heterosexuals like to see (beautiful) women; but to express concern about comments out of line, I believe.
Comments such as "I've just had an or..." and the like are just so out of line that I won't mind talking about it, and I don't think are signs of an educated individual who interacts with others by posting comments.
On the other hand, comments about the beauty of a female climber (in technically "good" pictures too) or about the climb itself, is just a matter of choice. Of course, since this is a rock climbing site, it would be more logical to write about the climbing ability, but I don't see any harm in a flattering comment. I remember to have read comments about ramonet's back or bicep (maybe more than about the route, I don't remember if it was an 8b+ in Siurana) and I didn't feel slightly offended (it didn' cross my mind till this precise moment).
If I'd posted a picture of myself redpointing a 7c+ (.13a) and everyone would have talked about my looks (in a good way, I mean :wink: ), I wouldn't had been offended either since the feeling of achievement doesn't come in comments about a picture (for me), but in the actual rock. Actually, I guess my ego would have been happy.
Anyway, that's MHO. I feel sorry about the ones that make disrespectful sexual comments, but don't mind to say that a girl looks beautiful if I think she does.
And Jono, I think you're being too obsequent and it's perfect demonstration is you're "I'm only 16 and so over everything while you'll are just sexual morons" attitude. I've seen a couple of photos with female climbers and posts of someone saying "nice looking" or "I wish I live there" or something like that (not orgas.... or anything like that) and there was you complaining about it. What's you're problem? i.e., if I like to congratulate Sarah Seeger (because she had just sent her first 8b) and also to say that she looks beautiful (in response to the previous comment); I don't need you saying that we're supposed to talk about the fact that she's sending a f***ing .13b.
I think someone could be a gentlemen/lady, be flattering to a female/male climber and talk about rockclimbing at the same time, I just don't see the trade off.

It's simple really, it's a question of how seriously you want people to take you. I attended a major university for a couple of years and because of that, I was around many different groups, groups devoted to race, sexual preference, nationality, etc.... I could really care less what these groups did, aside from breaking the law, killing me, ..etc.
I do get sick of groups that accuse me of being sexist, racist, prejudiced, etc..., without me doing anything against them. Any group that is not able to convey their message without insulting another group, is not effective, but more importantly, they damage their groups reputation.
So, it's simple, are feminists a bunch of raging dikes who hate men and have no real message to convey or any solution to present? Probably not, but that's certainly how it appeared in this thread.

Perhaps I'm only posting this because I'm compulsive. For your part, it's unnecessary for me to type another word; I'm just now clarifying for everyone else's benefit that I think you do perfectly comprehend and charcterize my position. You're right "deeply respectful" and "sincere awe" are not words that accurately portray the tone of most of the comments we're talking about. Rather, I simply thought it was worth pointing out that it's just great that the female type grabbing all the attention and praise around here is self-reliant, powerful, and successful, not sickly, ignorant, or submissive.
P.S. I think you're abosultely right in being suspicious of any random guy that will walk up to you in the street and give his opinion of your chest. Were I a woman, I would think any such guy is, at best, of no use to me, and, at worst, an imminent threat. But, I don't think that applies here on the internet. As we are, on average, about 2,000 miles away from eachother, I would think that if someone you've never met makes an "I just orgasmed" type comment about your picture, all you need to do is realize he's a schmuck and his views don't mean anything to you. Problem solved. All offenses occur at the moment of perception; a punch is just a swing until it lands. Luckily, in this case, you get to choose whether the offense works. Move on, and they'll keep commenting, and you needn't care.

I attended a major university for a couple of years and because of that, I was around many different groups, groups devoted to race, sexual preference, nationality, etc.... I could really care less what these groups did, aside from breaking the law, killing me, ..etc. I do get sick of groups that accuse me of being sexist, racist, prejudiced, etc..., without me doing anything against them. Any group that is not able to convey their message without insulting another group, is not effective, but more importantly, they damage their groups reputation. So, it's simple, are feminists a bunch of raging dikes who hate men and have no real message to convey or any solution to present? Probably not, but that's certainly how it appeared in this thread.
2) If I am being sensitive, perhaps you are too. I was arguing with you but I don't think you're an evil man owing to your race, gender, or whatever. I think at worst you rubbed me wrong, but I didn't partition you and I hope I did not state that implicitly or explicitly. Was an honest mistake if so.
3) I am not a raging dike consumed by social revolution. If it's relevant, I am wearing a bra right now and I am attracted to men, who I allow to keep their genitals. I don't know if you meant any irony by using a label like that in concert with your being upset at being possibly labeled with "isms;" again, I may just be oversensitive on that one. I was conveying a message- frustration with lewd and crude comments, and I was ASKING for everybody's help in creating a solution, if there was a need for one.
Again, cut the I wanna be witty part and I like to think I have a valid point.

good for you for bringing such a controversial topic! Yep, you have valid points--there is a difference between a) appreciating beauty and b) over-the-top objectification/harassment. If men don't *get* that or can't distinguish what's appropriate and what's not, then clearly we need some help! So, you were asking for ideas...
-it seems like the most obvious is for whoever is offended to call the other person on what they wrote...most things can be dealt with between the folks involved, without necessarily having to go to the moderators. If things escalate, then it can go to a moderator...
I totally realize this can only work so far--the anonymity of the internet and it's lack of boundaries/accountability means that at the end of the day, people can spew whatever crap comes out and everyone just needs to deal. But hopefully, some of the guys here read the postings and realize a bit more about appropriate posts.
By the way, I love the climbing pics and reading the comments--there are definitely some excellent shots w/ beautiful looking folks.

Dikes, Dykes, who cares. I don't know how to spell that word, I never use it in writing. I realize that a dike is a wall meant to stop floods, I had to look it up though. In the future, I will strive for accurate slurs. A group is any person, such as a single Hillary, who basically has something to say. You do not need to have a political agenda to be a group.
I do not intend to come off as witty, I just wanted to convey my feelings without taking up lots of space. More or less, I am just annoyed. I consider myself a pretty tolerant person of lesbians, gays, rednecks, black, white, green people, Asian people, feminists, the whole world basically, I don't care who it is.
I sincerely can't stand groups that bitch about stuff to me, I have grown to dislike them and ignore them, and I gave a simple reason why. However, to recap while I was at school, so many groups were more interested in blaming people, then say informing them of the problem. Now, when I see someone with a sign I instinctively ignore that person.
Who knows, maybe I am sensitive, but it could be that I just get really aggravated by people who cannot seem to solve a problem without being pissed off about it.

Guys need to imagine what it feels like to get "unwanted" sexual attention, Like imagine walking down the hallway between cells on your first day in prison.
I get horribly distracted when I see a beautiful woman, but I'm careful to treat people as people.
This sport used to be way worse. Hardly any women climbed 20 years ago.
Of course ladies, it might be worse if you were the ones infected with testosterone and guys didn't pay any attention to you. The torture goes both ways.
The thing I like about being a guy is not having to date guys. (no offense to those guys who do, but you get the point)

I welcome you to come to Woodson and lead Go With The Flow (11d) or Uncertainty Principle (11c). I guess they're both trad leads in that there are no bolts. No gear either. You're welcome to boulder them out as well. Both top out around 40' above death landings. Lemme know when you're headed down.
I happen to have a lot more bouldering and Woodson pictures because those are things you do / places you go in a group w/ short approaches and motivation to take pictures. Long hard multipitch routes I mostly leave the camera behind and just stoke on the climbing.

Climbsomething states her points from HER standpoint. This involves explaining things from HER perspective. I really don't see how this is annoying and she actually tends to use quite a bit of self deprecating humour. You should try that because you sound arrogand and judgemental towards someone who is dissatisfied with the lewd comments towards women that made here and is instigating change in a funny and respectful way.

i'm only new to climbing but havfe already picked up a strong passion for it. i love pics of anyone doing something that looks extremly hard, i am a male so it is natural unless i were a sexist that i would like the pic even more if it were to have some other aspect that i like (women), i personally find women do a difficult climb very intreging. when someone comments on how hot "she" looks or what ever its not just because she is a girl, and it doesn't mean that they want to pull of her pants and fuck her on the spot, what it means is they think she is beautiful and even more so because she is doing something that they love so much themselfs. if someone were to wright "god damit i wana rip off her pants and make love to her", then yes i would see a problem. cant you just learn to take complements as they are intended as a compliment. maybe u are upset because noone says such comments about you? either way it matters not.

I can see how my above post may appear to be arrogant, and for that I apologise, I did not intend as much - sorry. Unfair? Possibly. Judgemental? Possibly. But my comment was not made from reading only this thread, it was one that I have formed through my time spent on this website. It was formed after observing her posts, reactions to other people's posts, her comments on photos etc. I don't know her, but I'm sure she has a wonderful, unique outlook on life and that's great. What I find irritating is that she regularly draws attention to herself in her comments. Yes, I know that these forums are all about sharing our experiences and so on, but sometimes things are said that are annoying. Note that I said "annoying," a word that I feel isn't that strong, I didn't say "I want to rip her fucking head off" or anything as harsh as that, I was just stating what I think. Isn't that the point of these forums? Stating our thoughts? Daisyfay, you tell me to deal with it. Yep, I should and generally do, but sometimes CS just makes me SO ANGRY!!!! ( :P ) I just couldn't help it! [/attempt]. Adversely I could respond that the issue of this thread is pointless, and people should just deal with it. But I do actually believe that some men's comments on this sight are innappropriate (I too squirm at some of the things said by blokes about women in some photos), and I did already state CS had some valid points.
CS I'm sure doesn't really give a damn about what some dude on the internet. living thousands of miles away thinks of her. It was merely my observations, 0.02c if you will.

Hmm... here is a (short) list of the things I've learned from this thread: 1) Women (understandably) don't like lewd comments directed at themselves or other women; 2) (Many) guys just say something like, "This is how it is and how's it's always been, so deal with it." :roll: ; 3) Aforementioned comment generally isn't made by people who have felt sexually threatened or cheapened by a member of the opposite sex; 4) Jono likes to cuss a lot and insult many people he's never even met and men in general, even though he is a male (doesn't make much sense to insult yourself, even though it seems you consider yourself the only exception to your insults :roll: ); 5) All it takes is a little surgery man (sorry, I couldn't help to throw a jibe in there :P ); 6) Some people don't know a "group" entails more than one of an object and one object is defined as an "individual"; 7) My stance on this issue is this, "If the poster or individual subject of the photos we've been dicussing feels harassed, cheapened, teased, battered, jeered at, stared at like a piece of meat, etc etc, then that person should PM a mod or admin and ask to have the comment removed." I don't think that this is how it should be, I wish that all guys could be civil and avoid the offensive comments, but unfortunately some can't. I don't think that when I say, "That's a great pic! That girl is gorgeous!" I'm saying anything offensive. Many of us yuppies (young upwardly mobile [if you didn't get my pun then you are all @$$hole males who treat women like dirt! :twisted: ]) dream of having girlfriends who climb. So yeah... I think I've ranted enough. And yes, I think the comments do get old, even the "respectful beauty-appreciating" ones, but what can you do? I think that PMing a mod is the best solution.

Confucious says chicks who post pictures of themselves on the Net climbing in barely any clothes should not whine when man make comment about woody.
What do you expect to see in the comments? "I can't really see the rock or the route because your half naked body is covering it up but I'm sure its a really great climb. Good job!"
Granted this is not always the case. Objectification is wrong. A lot of the shots on this site are not deserving of it. Some are out right asking for it though. You put your picture(s) out there for the world to see and comment on and its pretty much a given that some people are going to be a$$es and some people are going to give you the feedback you were hoping for.

A very good point Phil, and one you men and (very occasional women) given to delivering these comments should take to heart. There is such a thing as ettiquete and it serves many functions other than keeping people from getting bent out of shape. If you've ever been to a large caver party with a clothing optional hot tub, you will see a distinct absence of lewd comments, leering, and weird vibes. And no grab-assing. There's a code of behavior that makes the hot tub scene work and be fun for all those concerned. Those too stupid to learn the code or do as the Roman's do deminish the fun, drive away the meek newcomers, and would best just remove themselves from the mix.
Now if it is the truly selfish viewpoint of "what's in it for me" you are coming from, then this appeal should strike a chord with you. Comments don't produce more of what you want to see. Best stick to comments that do bring in more photos. And you all know how to best phrase those comments. "That's a very nice photo." 'Nuff said.

You both sound like children with the vocabulary of snooty teenagers, arguing. Very entertaining :lol:
As for the real question: Moderation of comments made about the pictures: I think most of them should be left alone. Yes a lot of them are asinine but so are about half the posts made to this site. Too much censorship would drive a lot of the climbers away from the site. If the persons in the photos feel harassed then have the picture or comments deleted. If not, don't censor and keep bickering for the entertainment value. Great fun. Good thread maculated :lol:

I think a lot of the people posting these comments should be ashamed of themselves. I don't think anyone has any objection to comments that say "You are really beautiful", but the lewd nasty ones like the orgasm comment and a host of others are disgraceful. A good barometer of what is appropriate is to say only what you would if the girl's boyfriend/husband/parent was standing right there.
I don't think outright moderation is a good idea except in the very worst of cases, but if someone is uncomfortable or disgusted with a comment they should be able to raise the issue with an admin and get it fixed.

Let's be realistic - this is the INTERNET - I think we've pretty well established the fact that people use this medium to make comments that they would never actually say to someone's face. Some of the sexist comments are obviously over the line (most come across as pretty harmless to me), but look at some of the personal attacks and foul language that are bandied about in almost any controversial thread. You definitely have to take the good with the bad around here.

Wow is right, If you get suckered into sitting in that little room watching that video you deserve what you get! You sound like a lawsuit waiting for someone to land on!
On a different note or the same whatever ..... I have noticed that some of the most sensitive women to "sexual remarks/harassment/comments" wear the tightest spandex. Although I have not crunched the numbers I would tend to believe that their is a direct relation between sensitivity of the women and the amount of skin she has showing at any given time. I dated a girl who used to always comment on how this guy was looking at her this way, or that, and how someone made some comment to her, or some other stuff and how men are pigs....., But when she climbed at the gym she wore painted on spandex shorts and a jog bra. I mean god damn the girl had a smoking figure and of course men noticed. She argued she should be able to wear whatever she wanted and she is right. but what I could never understand was if she was so offended by the reaction why did she insist on the "sexy" outfits. Just a rant!
Men should keep their mouthes shut more often! and this I know. Looking and thinking is one thing but you don't always have to express it. Sorry ladies the truth is we are pigs! Some of us believe that it's not something to be proud of, rather something to enjoy and live with.

Sorry, but this isn't the "business world" that we are talking about. A good amount of what is said on this site would not be appropriate in other venues. In fact, much of it may not be appropriate here. However, I will state this as it has been said in many other ways...take it all with a grain of salt and consider the source. Now, I'll admit that sexual harassment (I use this term loosely) is not something I have been subjected to, but I've dealt with other forms of harassment my whole life. I doubt that the posts on this site are preventing anyone from living their life how they would like. If this is not the case, seek help!! Fact is, I don't let the little things get me down and neither should anyone else. In case I wasn't clear, I consider this specific issue one of the little things.
P.S. And no I'm not belittling the sexual harassment issue, but I just don't see it as such :)

News flash: some men/boys are socially challenged. Surprising, yes, but true.
Ok, I'll be sort of serious for a second. Yes, some of the comments are inappropriate, so much so that they even disgust many of us men (or at least embarrass us). So, is it just the crude comments that bother you, or do the more tasteful ones irritate as well?
Yes, we men objectify you (whatever that means). We pretty much consider every woman's potential as a sexual partner. That is how we are wired. Some of us just don't know how to deal with that in a socially acceptable manner, and a little "education" (smack down) every once in a while is in order. But I hope your issue is with the bad behavior and not with the way we are fundamentally wired, because otherwise you have a long stretch of frustration ahead of you.
I think most male climbers are attracted to women who kick ass in every way. Mentally strong. Physically strong. Intelligent women. Women who can push us, pull us, wake us up, challenge us, while at the same time be that comforting, safe place that only you know how to be. Most female climbers I've met have these qualities. Most are extremely intelligent and deep thinking/feeling individuals. Yeah, but what about the eye candy, you say.
I don't make comments on the internet about physical appearance, it's just not my style. Nonetheless, I do enjoy the eye candy. But there's more to it. Sure, it's just a picture on the internet, and we are drawn to the beauty, but I think for many of us the pictures of female climbers represent our ideal woman, including all of her qualities that we seek. We really do want you for your intelligence, your strength of spirit, your ability to be a sweaty, dirty hard woman for days or weeks on end, and yes, for the way you clean up when the road trip is over (even if you aren't Barbie, in fact, ESPECIALLY if you aren't Barbie). After all, there are lots of pics of beauty queens on the internet and in magazines, but they don't stir our imaginations like pictures of hard climbing chicks do. So, although comments may be about physical appearance (and I encourage my brothers to excercise a little class and self-constraint in that area), we do have other things on our minds as well. It's just that some poor little male-piglets haven't yet learned the subtle skills of oinking in a socially appropriate manner.
But, then again, some guys are just jerks.

I'll give this thread a 9.5 on the troll-o-meter. Let this be a lesson to all you proto-trollers out there - say it like you mean it (especially if you really do)!
If I may indulge myself in a little theory, I call this the "supernova" style troll. It's like fishing with a hand-grenade. You lob it in the water, and the shock-wave kills all of the fish in the immediate area - they float up, and you just skim them off. Often the bigger fish will swim by, attracted by all the fresh meat floating around! The "shock and awe" of trolling if you will. It generates pages of responses very quickly, with most of the major personalities feeling the necessity to chip in, at least briefly. The only downside is that this trolling style rarely generates much good stuff after a few days. Look at this lame post, for example - after only a single day!
Anyway, another nice one CS! I tip my hat to you!
I do also have my own little contribution to the thread. First, a quick story... I used to shower at the gym after my workouts. There was a guy there who I never saw anywhere in the gym except the locker room. It seemed that whenever I walked into the shower room, he would appear out of nowhere and start showering next to me. Funny thing, though - he clearly had no interest in getting clean - he would just stare. Now I'm pretty comfortable with my body, and he wasn't hurting me, so I just ignored him for a while, but after about the fourth time, it really started bugging me. I basically told him to shove off. I mean, I kind of felt bad for the guy - that his sex-life was so pathetic, but I really did feel uncomfortable. Draw your own conclusions and lessons from the story.
I believe I once saw a paper that showed that images of attractive women caused men's brains to produce a bunch of chemicals - basically making them happy. It was completely involuntary. Had nothing to do with fantasizing or desire. Just like Pavlov's dog - automatic response. So of course guys would like the pics with the "hotties" in them more. The trouble is with the few men who just can't help but share their most base responses.

OMFG! Hey, guess what- We're not at work! I don't believe that anyone posting here gets paid to do so. I am a professional and have been for several years. I've sat through many Sex. harassment tng classes, and have even taught some myself. Sexual harassment laws do not protect a person when they are walking dpown the street, at the mall, or posting on an internet site. So, you're exactly right that women don't have to... Oh wait, I'm being sexist... I mean ANYONE does not have to "put up with that type of remark." They can simply leave and go to Rec.Climbing :lol: :lol: :lol: or start their own website.
It's only words. Didn't your mamma ever teach you about sticks & stones???

Here's an interesting question though. Quite a while ago I posted a photo of my wife bouldering. The very first comment made was strictly about her looks. "wow! she is so beautiful!! "
It caught me a bit offguard but I think my wife is beautiful also so I made reference to the fact that I was in full agreement. Am I encouraging and perpetuating a certain attitude towards women by agreeing with this comment?

OK I finally have to weigh in. For the most reasoned male response see Hugepedro - after he gets past his "spanker" comment.

It's that simple guys. It may be witty to you in ninth grade, but this here is the big wide world. So while your objectifying the "hottie" in the climbing photo - your being one of the guys it ain't a good idea for the hottie to be with. Granted a bit of objectifying happens in all sexual behavior - it happens best when it's a safe behavior between the two or three (kinda of a joke, but sex reality is diverse) people involved.
Climbsomething: At least these guys are revealing what they are like so you don't have to waste time on em in the real world.
One last thing. the women in the photos may not even know they are posted here and so may not may be able to complain to mods or admin. The person taking the photo has the control of it.

Not only do I congratulate Hillary on having one of the best troll threads I have seen but also getting every guy to succumbed to his lowliness.

Guys, you should have looked the other way and ran! There is NO right answer here. You know as well as I do that you love to look at hotties. Just as an interesting aside, I heard this report on NPR about what happens to people who either get too much testosterone or too little.
One report came from this Lesbian woman who was a total feminist. She was considering having a sex change operation so she was getting supplemented testosterone. She related that, all of sudden, she found herself checking out other women in blatently sexual ways, where before she thought more in terms of relationships and dialog. She was totally ashamed of herself but the animal within her was awakened!

Sometimes as well girls, what you don't seem to realise is that the comments are made, just because we know they'll antagonise you. However I myself cannot recall having said anything in the nature of"Wow she's hot", except for in defence of female trad climbers, who promptly flamed me for it. And Girls, you are just as bad. I bet you any money, that I've put up with far more sexual harrasment than you have. I used to work in a bar, and trust me, women on a hen night are ten times worse than any men, even on a stag night. How many times has anyone shoved their hands up your skirt when your out? Thats real sexual harrasment. Cos everytime I wear my kilt (because I'm proud of my Scottish ancestory) every girl I meet seems to think its an invitation to shove her hand up it, or lift it up repeatedly, despite me first asking nicely, then telling them to f*ck off. You females (in general) are just as bad. Don't think your all innocent cos your not. Its just we men put up with it a lot more, and don't bleat about it. Take comments like "Wow she's hot", like the compliments they are meant as. Save your cries of sexual harrasment for the real harrasment, not just some good natured compliments.

Hmm. As you can see lilred, some guys will probably just take your disinterest as a sign that they should try harder. I do of course not condone such activities as thrillseeker05 obviously are up to here but you have to face the reality that some guys are like that. Uhhh...unless I get skunk drunk and shove my hand up your harness, how does that apply to rock climbing? I don't think there are a lot of "hens" (a really lame term for women BTW, dude) that go rock climbing and try to grab men's privates.
And I have been in many a bar over the years where some toasted guy walking past thinks it's perfectly fine to try to brush his hand up my skirt and grab my ass. And I probably wear more skirts than you wear kilts.

The guys are not to be left out as here in Oz the batchellor party is called bucks night. It`s where blokes are allowed to be lewd and they all leer at the paid stripper, they also drink lotsa beer and then can`t remember what they did in the morning so it`s all good. They then go down the main street dragging the naked buck and tie him to a lamp post to suffer for a couple of hours so that all the chicks out on the town can see what they will be missing out on for the rest of the bucks married life.

I gotta be honest I would much rather see a hot girl climber than a guy on any route but that doesn't mean I'm a perv.

IMHO, she is not horizontal, but standing in a crack in a vertical position and clipping into a draw that is being pulled up and out by a line, not even necessarily the line she is clipping with. Look carefully at the placement of her right foot and the posture of her left leg. When it's rotated its evident she is standing on and holding herself fully relaxed on her left arm. Now look at the rope. She is not leading. She has no gear on her harness. Look again at the the draw. A second draw is pulling the draw she is clipping into into the position for her to clip. It's fake. absolutely fake. Sorry to blow your illusion. Enjoy the magic of photography. When I first looked at it I didn't want to believe it either, but I studied it and then my girlfriend took one look and spotted it right off.
I wanted to start a separate thread about this. You know, take a vote. get everyones reaction. Is she or isn't she. Her body posture is the giveaway. She has near zero strain to hang upside down and clip that thing. Gimme a break. It takes a lot of work to hold ones whole body in position. I also believe that the rock formation around her has been "tweaked" in photoshop.
By the way I have no objection to your proving me wrong. Give me solid reasons to understand that she is "leading" or even really climbing that completly horizontal roof and I'll buy the beer.

hillary, I understand you and I now avoid to make this type of comments, as you or others asked me once (when I used to post in the LAdies forum) to be more respectful. So I try to be, except in the Community. I just noticed that I made a very "nice" comment in the pic with the spanis grls bouldering in Bleau but couldn't resist to make a joke in french and english...

What if there was a picture of a female climber with a bikini top on and a full rack of gear and my comment to the picture was "Geez, she's got a great rack!" How would you first interpret that?

I would have to say the pic is real. First look at her hair and chalk bag. They are consistent with her hanging from a roof. Yes the draw could be pulled out from the wall like that but why? If they were trying to fake this pic they went to some far measures. Next look at the rope, the way it is laying down her body and up her arm. The rope would not do that if she was vertical. Especially the way it falls around behind her wrist. Finally look at her left breast. The way it is pulled by gravity is consistent with her being on a roof. As for her not straining she is somewhat. Her left arm is flexed and it appears her abs for flexed out. Also it’s not like she hung there to pose for the picture. Even if she did somewhat, with a bomber hold she could be stable there for a while.
As for her leading I think she is leading and all the draws are already hung so she would not need any on her harness.

It is unfortunate that it takes so little for us men to think about sex, but you women are far from blameless.
Any female, especially a relatively attractive one, that is going to have her picture taken in a sports bra is asking for it. If you don't agree it's because you aren't a man and have no idea how our mind works.
Regardless of whether it is wrong or not, scantily clad women make men think about sex. Even if it is wrong it is not going to change. Always has and always will. You not liking it is not going to make men look differently at near naked women. We will still think about sex. If you put a picture of yourself on the site in little clothing it will make men think about sex.
I marvel that you women still wear in public and post pictures in this type of clothing and then complain about the response it brings.
If prior to my post you did not realize what it did to guys you have now been enlightened. If you did know already then what are you complaining for.
It's a very simple formula:
A + B + C -> D
where
A is young heterosexual males,
B is pictures of scantily clad women
C is a public, semi anonymous forum (thus normal constraints of embarassment and politeness are diminished
-> is the yield sign for any non-mathmaticians out there, not =
D is crass comments
Honestly, if you want to make a change start with yourself (which perhaps you already have) and don't make yourself the object. You say, "Well I don't want comments made like that about me, but I want to wear my sports bra." You can't have it both ways. It is a fact forever that men seeing women in revealing clothing will make them think about sex and even if they don't say them, imagine the comments that you've read. So be modest. Your rants will not affect the psycho/physiological (not sure if that's the right word) processes in a man's head. Nor do I think you really want to. Imagine a world where men were not sex crazy. Very few of you women would be getting married, one (of the two in my estimation) of your powers over men would be gone. Just think of all that guys do to ultimately get sex. Gone. No I think it would be much better if you women were a little (make that a lot) more modest. And your power over men would be even greater and you would gain the respect of men such as myself (not that you particularly want that, just saying).

Yep. Agreed. I found it to be pretty funny that the originator of this thread commented on some dude's picture by saying, "Guys who wear glasses are hot!" Then I see this thread. I later go back to the picture and her comment was cleaned up a bit. Her credibility was pretty much ruined the second I saw her comment and then this hypocritical thread thereafter. Someone is either trolling or pretty confused.

Just like when I, being a relatively attractive man, have my picture taken while smuggling slightly larger than average sized grapes up a problem in my banana hammock. The idea is you are wearing the least amount of clothing possible for comfort... but you will have to deal with the consequences. I stopped wearing my banana hammock at crowded bouldering areas because the comments were too offensive and distracted me from my climbing experience. Not to mention I couldn't get anyone to give me a good spot... quite different than the ladies' experience, I'm sure. Now I only wear it when I am climbing alone.

The draws as you say could be already in place, but the absence of them in a "faked" photo avoids the problem of how they would truely react to gravity. It is not difficult to get the chalk bag to stay in that position if she is standing up. Any basic prop person or photo stylist can do it. Ditto for her hair. The tension in her arm muscle, holding her to the rock is consistent with standing up and not with holding the body from falling downward from the extended position she is in. Her body posture reaching for the clip is consistent also with reaching up and not out. I think if she were using her legs to hold her weight in place in a horizontal position they would be more flexed. The tension is consistent with standing erect. the rope is not terribly difficult to dress like that, however I concede that it does drape downward, suggesting gravity. BUt again she is holding it where she is clipping. A major concern remains with the three draws, the one from the anchor, the one leading beyond her with the rope/line attached and the third one she is clipping. Why would any climber, attach two draws to the draw already in to the anchor and clip in in this fashion?
As far as thomasribiries comments on stalcitites. I must say they do not look real to me. Nor does the rock in the background. Can you say photoshop?
For real proof, we need photos of this route from a wider angle showing the formation in detail with the sourrounding background; ground, far distance, etc...

The rope is going past her to the previous clip. she's just turned her body in order to heelhook the big flake on the roof. With her LEFT foot.

Whoa! dude! look again.
the one at the "anchor" is really the first clip. That's why the lead rope goes to the ground after the draw. Also why it is LOWER than the other 2 draws. hmmmmmm...
There aren't 2 draws clipped into the same draw. The second draw is about 10 feet behind/below her and only looks like it's attached because of the perspective of the picture (by the way, think of it as if she's climbing TOWARDS the camera) if you look closer you can see the bolt that it's clipped into.
The draw she is clipping has simply been extended with another sling.

How about this. you go to thailand. find your way to railae. hike across the peninsula to Ton Sai beach. find yourself a seat at the restaurant on the beach and watch the climbers (who are much stronger that you) crank on this roof only 10 feet away
The only thing that might be wrong is that the image might be mirrored. but then again i could be thinking of a different route. it is a big roof you know.

IS it really wrong to publicly announce /display / decree in any form acknowledgement of an individual's perceived attraction to another? DOES this display / acknowledgement really take away from any other aspect of the individual, i.e. their intelligence; their physical / professional accomplishments?
IS it possible that the modern male climber may actually be not only semi-educated, but perhaps artistically inclined as well, and might appreciate all the aspects of a quality photograph including the beauty of the climb itself AND the beauty of the climber?
IS it actually possible for modern society to remember that humans have no choice in certain matters, such as a natural instinct to be attracted to a certain appearance / body type / odor / whatever?????
SO the caption reads "Ms. XXX cruising the sustained climb XXX rated 5.12D". Got it. Got half of it anyway. Got it from the caption and the route on the photo. Acknowledged all the physical and mental aspects of climbing work that had to be combined getting to that level - appreciate that - respect that...probably can't climb that personnaly. Oh, and by the way, I did figure out that sometimes, maybe this time, (especially if publication and $$$$ are a possibility) that she and her photographer colaborated to ensure she was wearing a nicely contrasting outfit to enhance the quality of the photograph.
SO, the comment, "Nice picture, and MS XXXXX can call me for a belay anytime" isn't necessarily demeaning...it's simply honest.
IT's honest because the second half of the equation really IS the "Zowee Factor". Some women have it...some don't. Some climber chicks really have it.
But then again, I'm biased - My Zowee metric may be different than yours.

On one hand I am inclined to say that Hilary is overreacting here, but I am also inclined to agree with her to some extent. First, the comments are at times unnecessary and shameful, but guess what, you can turn the comments off. No fun! Well I do agree, sometimes the comments are the best thing about some photos. With every good there is bad, and you have to deal with it. I think Hilary has been dealing but something pushed her over the edge that inspired action (this thread) instead of avoidance or indifference. She cared enough to take the time to construct a serious example of what she thinks is wrong in the hope of changing things for the good of all. As men we should try to maintain an enviroment that the women feel comfortable in, because their presence is a great value to me, not that I am trying to get hooked up, but I jsut perfer a womans presence to a man. They smell a lot better, now I am trying to get hooked :wink: I have also seen the calls for Hilary to go get laid, which I find humorus, since I think this thread targets a lot of the men out there not getting any LMFAO.
Men, being unsensitive, often do not realize how their behavior affects others. I hope that this thread will sink in for some of us and clean things up a bit. Who knows, maybe the schisters making the shallow childish remarks will be scorned for doing so in the future. Raise the bar for more than just your rock climbing for once.

i have not bothered to read all these posts, but i would agree that things do tend to devolve to a rather sophmor(on)ic level at times...and i think that it is a testament to the laid back women who do frequent this site that there is not more uproar over some of the comments...
But do not dis Jorg's euro ladies...that is crossing the line!!! They embody all that is right and just in the world. damnit!

You have to rember that it is these girls that are posting pictures of themselves. I don't consider myself to be a "hardbod" of any sort. If you are comfortable with how you look then post pics and if people drool over them then they drool over them.
Still the majority of the pictures on RC is of guys climbin. So if it is anyone that is drooling over pictures it is statistically likely to be of a femine gender. So don't go straight out assuming that all guys that look at this website just go for pictures of girls to get there jollies. Hell those girls are hot but there is more to life than just starin at pics of hot girls...you got to go out and find them :lol:
