Why sleep? My first final tomorrow isn't until noon. I have a full eleven hours to piss away until then. Only about 8 of it will be sleeping. Beer and amaretto (though I am considering switching to something different) seem as good a technique as any.

Morning Erik.

You know I always have fun. Life's to short to be depresses or evn just freakout about it., Besides, I get to lay around and do nothing for a couple of weeks, Then go back to Work.

We have a bunch of work coming up, but it's not back from approval yet,
so as soon as it comes back I'll go back to work.

WE make Stairs, so every thing we do hacs to be approved by the architect before we can proceed, that always takes time. Lazy bastard's anyways, Wish they'd hurry up.

Aw hell, Ben... That sucks. You said temporary, though, right? Is it a case of a company laying off a bunch of contract workers for a set time so that they don't have to give them benefits, or something?

Edited to say: nevermind, read the rest of the thread.

Hope you get work soon, dude.

Tai,

Like I mentioned in the post above, We manufacture Stairs for high rise buildings, Just like everything in the construction busines, we get slow this tome of year. We have a couple of really huge jobs coming up. so as soon as they come in I'll be busier than a pup with two peters. Just have to endure this layoff. The company I work for is really cool though. I got laid of Friday, then went to the Company Chistmas party on Sat. and got a bonus check. So they look out for us.

Besides I really needed a vacation!!

I'm stilly trying to decide what a zipple is. Is it a zipper or a nipple? Or is it a nipple with a zipper on it?

Someone needs to find a suitable image. I have to meet with my boss soon in her office. It's time for yearly reviews *insert scary music here*

Hahah. After reading the instruments thread, I've decided to update my 'List of Things A Guy must be able to do (or have) in Order For Me to Date Him'. I'm adding that he must be a trumpet player (though I'll take french horn, but no lower brass). Attraction increases with ability to double tongue.

you can look up the pink slip if you want - it's alllll good - the company was taken over shortly thereafter and i was able to find contract work - which worked out just fine!

ummm . . . BLK I don't want you to go! It's hump day - my interest is not in your work history. Perhaps you don't wear a slip. Got anything else I can look up? By no means refer me to yesterday's blond in the red shift. (shudder)

Hello kids!!

Sick still so wasnt' at work yesterday. Man, these have hit me hard this year.

Still no snow here, beautifull and +10 every day isn't condusive to alot of skiing...

Things with the Crush (since I'm sure you were all dying to know) are great, he seems to have not noticed the suckiness as much as me.
Yesterday, he put a drill bit through his thumb. Yuck. I think he should go to the hospital but he seems to think it's fine...he can see the spot on the other side where it almost came out the bottom. Eww.

Morning Grunts,

The Have you ever been published? thread got me thinking. So I dug around the Phoenix archives to see if I could find this picture. I wish it was bigger in file. In print it ran full spread across the first two pages in the Arts & Entertainment section of the year 2000 Best of Boston edition of the Phoenix.
http://www.bostonphoenix.com/...e_modelcafe_kula.gif

That's me in the center that everyone is piled on. It was during the second phase of my blond period. Back row ltr are JohnToy, Tall Paul, Blond Mike, and Big Mick. The caption read something like, "Be careful what you wish for or you might find yourself with these guys playing Metallica covers in someone's basement."

Winter, hope he's OK. Fact is there probably isn't much the doc's could do except bandage it and look for infections. Drills don't leave anything behind to stitch or repair as such. :?

I told you guys are used to some freak out. He probably noticed but figured it was a minor blip and mentioning it only makes it moe than it needs to be. Sounds like you found a reasonable one. 8^)

The "Not being psycho this weekend" plan is probably still prudent, though.

Morning peeps,

Ben go take a mini-break for yourself! Relax, drink some beer & go climb something. A temporary lay-off sounds awesome (well as long as you can still pay the bills).

Winter I think your boy needs to have a doctor look at that - if only to be certain it doesn't get infected and it heals properly. But hey it's his finger right?! When does he visit? Was it this weekend?

Congrats on the 4.0 katydid!!! That is fantastic! :D

Jake, STFU!!!! You're going to give up why? Cause you can't find an apartment? Live in your truck like the rest of the ski bums. It's high time you stopped making excuses and got on with it. Did it ever occur to you that the reason you keep failing this test is that subconscoiusly you don't really want to leave the comfort and safety of the nest? Get the fuck up there and work on the mountain all winter. If, come spring, you happen to be a few dollars in the hole, so the fuck what.... Some times you have to take an initial loss to gain in the end.

Jake, there is NO WAY you are going to avoid some sort of finanacial disaster when you move out of your mom's house. no way. once you're out on your own, completely self supporting, hte wolves are ALWAYS at the door. Somtimes the door is several flights down, and sometimes the door is on the closet you're hiding in after the wolves have ransacked the appt, but they're always there, slavering, ready to burst thru the door and pounce.

best just suck it up and get used to it. Paycheck-to-paycheck is the rule, rather than the exception.

...as for me, long ago I invited them in.

hmm...a little harsh...but somewhat agreable.

Jake I did sugest you do the truck thing...(I have done the car thing before) ...0 degree/-15degree bags are great... And you are ignoring the potential to shack up with guests on the Mountain?

As far as your test...I would not say you are intentionally failing it, but can you say you are trying your hardest?

Best of luck, and find some motivations somewhere man,
Jason

My truck cab is not big enough to live in, if you hadnt noticed it's fucking cold in NH and a truck is not warm enough for that... blah blah i could go on

i'm not subconciously doing anything.. or else i wouldnt have kept trying to pass the test over and over .. i like what i went to school for but it's too bad the written simulation does a horrible job of actually testing for compentency expected out of a recent graduate

what would i gain by being up there that would pay me back afterwards? nothing

if you'd like to send me over 6-700 each month so that you could in the spring gain a place to crash for climbing at rumney and cathedral ... whats a few bucks in the hole eh?

No one said cab...you do have a bed right? You could get a (USED)tanno cover, or a cap. I wouldn't want to live there forever, but 3 months is not forever.

I think the real reason you aren't going is you don't want to be away from RC.com hehe...jk.

i am trying as hard as i can to pass my test jason.. the problem is is that they are random scenario's that i do not have any way of knowing what they will be... so studying is more of a matter of general knowledge and working through the steps rather than knowing exactly what you are giong to be faced with and memorizing it.. i'm not sure many of the people here are in that kind of a field

jason.. how long did you sleep in a truck??? in northern new hampshire? hardly comfy enough to live there for 4 months in the middle of the winter

a cap.. yes.. more money in the hole.. then there is insulation, figuring out a place to park, showers, clean clothes etc.. and did i mention it's FUCKING COLD

and jason unlike you i am not OK with hooking up with random girls for a night of sex and nothing more.. so the whole "guest" thing is out

rob i'm aware that it will be pay check to pay check... BUT when i'm LOSING money each month why SHOULD i put that upon myself?

i've made up my mind.. nothing you say is being considered as options..
that is all

Pirate: werd

I forgot but there was something else I wanted to say. Sigh. Oh, yeah.

Katydid: Congrats, that is soooo awesome!

And um, Yay I got a good review by my boss! Glowing praise all around. I actually blushed in her office from the spewing of gratititude. But, for all that, I still just "Met Expectations". Not "Exceeded Expectations". Ah well, at least I'll get a moderate bonus in March.

Not TRUE...sometimes there is more sex and quite often breakfast. Truthfully Jake, this I have only been fortunate enough to experience this a handfull of times. I am not a huge slut and I would never consider myself a player (god knows I'm not that good at the game).

I have slept in my car several times when I was more "more think than I drunk I am" last winter. The nights when It snowed made it easy to sleep late...your car covered in snow...allowing a dull gray light to barely penetrate...very calming. Also I am probably going backbacking in the whites or Biggalow with my friend Josh in the upcomming weeks. Cold isn't really an obstacle, just something to be planned for.

Best of luck in what ever avenue of employment you persue. I am still young and stupid and living in a vehicle would not be beyond me.

Good luck Jake,
Jason

I'm in agreement with Pirate for the most part but Jake just remember you are the only person who has to live with your life. You are responsible for you and if at some point you are unhappy with your life, you put yourself there. Remember that when you want to take a chance and there are obstacles in the way, there will always be obstacles. It will never be the perfect time for you to take a risk - just weigh your options and decide what risks you will live with and which ones you won't. It's all you buddy, all your decision.

I can say these things because I have done them - I was miserable til I took a big risk and moved to CO for a job that doesn't pay crap (and I don't mean $8 an hour crap ...I mean we get money for rent & food - that is it kids). I didn't know anyone here and it's scary and I am one disaster away from financial problems but so what? I LOVE IT HERE. I don't have many friends but I get out and do things and meet people. So was it worth the risks? Absolutely. But again, it was MY decision made on my own terms. You have to decide what is best for you and you have to live with it my friend. So if you are ok at home, then stay there. If you want to go to NH, go. Life is certainly what you make it and as we get older we regret the things we didn't do vs. the things we did. But I wish you the best man.

Good luck.

HAHHAHAHHAH oh boy.... food will be here soon (yes, i called and gave them the correct suite number).....

at least i fixed the compass in my car by moving it away from the noteclip thingy (has some metal in it, duh).

I agree that Jake still needs to get his own place, and I told him that. But I also agree that NH right now might not be the best thing. Sleeping in your car for a night because you're drunk is one thing, or even planning a week long back country winter trip, but committing to doing it for a 5 month winter in the bed of a pickup ahead of time as part of a "Plan," without a shower or a place to cook or even a plan on a place to safely park the car at night (contrary to romantic notions, most ski areas take a dim view of ski bums living in their parking lots, as do grocery stores, McDonald, and practically everyone else.) is PROBABLY not the best choice.

Has there ever been a time where your partner's labido waned or ceased to exist? What did you do about it? I need a little help, and I guess the question suits humpday.

But we're here to listen and give advice.

Knock wood, never more than a couple days lapse. Usually I let her get a good night sleep and she's right back. !5 years and she's still more voracious than I am. 8^)

That said, I have often been told she finds a man who does the dishes, or the laundry or makes the beds, irresistable. Are you pulling your wieght around the house or pulling a Ted Bundy? Do you make sure you taking care of her needs or just banging away then falling asleep? The course of action requires determining exactly what caused the change in the first place.

I'm talking like a four year relationship and once in the last three months.

It was normally 3-4 times a week.

jason.. spending one night drunk in your car is a WHOLE lot different than LIVING there for 4 months .. no matter how easy you think it is.. it is not..
truck beds are not car interiors .. if not perfected they are leaky, cold, damp, vulnerable (criminal: hmm that car has been parked here for quite some time.. say bye bye to all ur stuff )

Maww i'm aware that the there will be a point where i have to make the leap.. and i will i thought this was going to be it but it is financial suicide
i cannot find an apartment that is within a reasonable distance for less than 650/month.. a the mountain i'd be making 6.50-7/hr x PERHAPS best case scenario 40hrs/week (conditions go to shit.. bye bye hours)
so aprox 800-900 month.. so between 150 and 250 a month Best case money for food, gas, and whatever else i cant think of

chad agrees with me and has been helping since day 1 on this adventure and it just wont work out right now.. having guaranteed hours and housing maww is something that you have and i would not (renters could really care less if the temps rise and all the snow melts)

for the record i have lived away from home.. i spent 4.5 years in the dorms at school and can exist out of my house.. trust me this is not my grand scheme of life but it's what i can do right now with what i have

Um, why NH to ski?? Sounds like the crapiest area ever for that. Go somewhere with real mountains, a real resort.
If you work at Lake Louise they accomodate all the staff in this big dorm called charleston, pretty fun. I've been to a few parties there, good times.
If you live in your car you can be like Rickie from Trailer park boys, he parked the car in the yard of his friend's trailer then lived in it. He had a propane bbq on the roof and a hose from his friends house for dishes/washing. Man that was funny.
I spent a portion of a winter in a camper I had parked in this guys yard. I showered at the local community centre/pool. It was damn cold some nights though and it had a heater.

Um, libido down? do they feel unattractive? Recently gained some weight? do they think you're cheating on them? Mine has only been low when I thought the bf was cheating, oh and when my old bf was fat.

I think it might be a little colder in the back of a car then a dorm room. Anyway Jake is a big boy, and can make his own dessions.

erik i was a PE major with a concentration in Athletic training (aka sports medicine some places call it)

the test is a 3 part national certification that is required by law for practicing athletic trainers (aka in a high school, college, clinic, pro team etc)
i have passed the practical and written parts.. and have (as many do) trouble with the written simulation section.. which is hard and unforgiving of mistakes even if they are accidental

what's sad is that i have more schooling than an EMT, the national test is much harder, and i could proably go and take that class and pass or outdoor wilderness first aid/emt whatever... but there is no money in outdoor emt because it's either seasonal with Ski patrol or volunteer with SARS

i am not big on emergency medicine.. i do not want to deal with people that are shot up or crashed in an accident.. too stressful and not fun for me...
i love sports and i think athletic injuries are interesting and managable

Kitty i do not think there is a homeless shelter in Waterville, NH the whole valley has been turned into an upscale center for the ski business.. hence the inability to find cheap housing because people dont have to offer it .. they CAN charge more so they do

i actually live in the burbs of bush - correct, i haven't a clue re: weather other then i was serious about my notes re: shelters. it's the socialist in me to tap into resouces as best as one can as that is what they are there for.

this said, i hope you find work jake - regardless, life is one helluva journey - if you were here, i'd share some of my yum lunch w/ you :)

anyway, speaking of skiing. heh. i'm organizing a ski day for my work department. fun fun. PA: it's where all the 'big mountains' are. hahahaha.

FWIW, gotta back Jake on this. It may well be very different in other areas but in NH any place even remotely close to skiing, as in within an hours drive, is pretty much trendy yuppy hell during the ski season. Even the smallest 1 room cabin at a motel runs you $500+ a week during peak season. I've been looking at places with Jake online and by the time you find a place under $700 a month he's into a 30 mile commute. Suddenly his weekly gas is almost more than rent. I don't know of ANY of the mountains offering housing assistance, mostly they subsist off the labor of local teenagers. And the moountains he was interviewing at wouldn't even GUARANTEE 40 hrs. in the best conditions. A big thaw like we had two years ago and he could easily have found himself with no hours for a couple weeks.

He'd be better of making $10 an hour at Home Depot and trying to find a roomate in the area down here.

thanks kitty.. i had a yum lunch already.. home made pizza in fact..

Kimmy.. i started it.. now i'm ending it.. advice to "find a better resort" from someone in western canada.. is not helpful Waterville is fairly small but really nice resort and i would have liked to have worked there.. no it's not Snowbird but i cant be taking flights out to Utah for interviews now can i?
i can be a snow snob just like anyone else.. sure i love knee deep powder with 4million miles of trails but it's called taking what you can get (plus its funny seeing western double black skiers/boarders falling on their ass because they can't deal with a little hard pack and the occasional ice patch on a blue square ;) muahhahaha )

Lein the room for rent was an option but was still like 500/month or more and still quite a hike to the mountain.. (aka 30-45mins in good conditions.. let alone a nice Nor'Easter blizzard) and like i've said.. i dont know anyone up there that far.. closest is like 1.5 hours away

anyway.. go back to poor whats his face and his lack of sex.. he is still in need of advice... i am not

Forget everything I said.

Jake, Grow a sack. Buy a tent and a -40°bag, find a nice spot off-piste and live off the land for the winter. You'll be dressed in so many layers as a lift op noone will be able to smell you anyway. And I'm SURE the lodge throws out plenty of perfectly good food every hour or two.

Yeah but I'll be getting laid tonight while you'll be hanging with Mary Ppalm and her five sisters while mom knocks on the bathroom door going, "Jake, what are you doing in there? You've been in there for hours. Are you OK?"

Although I'll admit the free skiing and a place to crash WOULD have been cool.

Of course while you're getting started in your new profession, asking "Would you like to try two apple pies for a dollar?" there is always the chance Edge will come buy and ask you to run away with him.

Um, yeah it's coffee shop, everything is open for discussion, get used to it. I don't know anything about Jake or his situation, but I can tell you one thing, if you're going to ski for a year, do it right. I was just pointing out that some ski hills have accomodation for their staff, that's all, since the discussion was 'no where to live at the ski hill'.
Not sure I understand the point or the fun involved in blue ice conditions. Yuck.

when I was in college I had a good friend whose brother worked as a cook at the Wildwood Shelter on Vail. We spent a week with him. It was religious. The waist deep powder confounded us but one day over at Beaver Creek we were headed down Grouse Mountain, my friend and I struggling to keep up in the soft stuff as usual, when all these Colorado powder hounds pulled up at this ridge and started waving us down yelling "Ice! Ice!"

He and I, being from New England and actaully having EDGES on our skis just grinned at each other and flew past them onto the face. We carved the whole way down, feeling almost at home again, and then stopped at the bottom and watched the rest of them fall and claw and trip their way down.

Powder and wide open bowls are nice but there is a certain sick badge of pride that comes from skating down the 20' wide Outer Wildcat Trail in a whiteout, riding the lifts when the board lists the summit conditions as "Life Threatening." MRG- Ski it if you can. 8^)

Do you like pain? If not don't bother. Learning to board hurts. Alot. It is a whole other realm of pain you don' t get skiing. That being said, nothing beats a board in steep powder. :sigh: still too warm here.

no.. still not whining... more of a kinder, gentler STFU, eh?

winter. i'm sure Lake louise is nice.. but are you going to fly me there and get me an interview?
Eastern skiing in bad conditions is like J tree slab... alot of balance, technique and when you fall.. expect to be scraped up.. however we do have good days and unless you can only ski deep powder you'll be just as happy as any where else.. groomers are groomers no matter where they are..

wow winter.. you're so coooooool!!!! you ski at a nice mountain
in the wise words of Phil "Blah, blah, blah, talk to the hand, care factor zero."

if i had a choice of mountains that i'd work at if distance and money were no object it certainly wouldnt be canada

OMG how old is this Jake kid??? I never said you should work anywhere, holy crap what a baby you are. All I said was I know of hills that offer accomodation for staff, not for you specifically, just since the discussion was about working at a ski hill. Period. The Lake is an example of that.

Wide, if I lived out east (which I never would) I would ski for sure. I can ski on ice just fine, but mostly I only hit the trees, super steeps and out of bounds stuff so for that I love my board. On ice, skis beat the board hands down. Now I don't go unless there's a ton of snow, just not into the groomers anymore. And you would like the Lake, on the front side runs where they run the world cup GS and downhill there is all the ice one could hope for! :D

Winter is dead on about boarding. I've been once and I could barely walk for 3 days after...everything on me hurt! I've never skiied but being in the land of snow & fun, I'll have to try it this season. Either ski or 'board, I'll be out there again.

I think someone asked earlier if most of us are from Mass - NO. We're an eclectic group from everywhere - Canada, Scotland, all parts of the US. Wasn't today's shop started by Josephine in Greece? The multi-culture that is the coffee shop, I dig it. :D

maww kate was asking chad and jason about being from mass because the temp. difference between MA and NH or VT (where she is) is HUGE at least a 20F degree drop

winter.. if the mountains i had been hired to work at had staff living places.. i'd be gone already. and you're the one freaking out or all giggly about the guy ur dating.. how old do you act those days?

i prefer steep powder too.. but i dont live near it so i change gears and do more bumps and fast carving instead

flame away.. ur keeping me warm over here.. it's cold out today :P

jake, have you looked into splitting a room with someone? jeremy's buddy that had/(has?) the cabin at the base of cathedral had a full time floor jockey when i was up there.

about a year after i graduated from college, i left the research job i was working at to persue photography full time. i got a contract with an auction house and the first catalog had to be done in maine, central maine. i lived that january and february in the back of my saab. shipton was just a puppy then and insisted on sleeping in my bag with me. so i'm not just tossing out impossible advice. it can be done if you resolve yourself to do it. besides, after the first week or two, your body just gets used to the cold and it isn't that bad. i even started getting up every morning and tooking a snow bath. now that's fucking cold. you learn to appreciate the beauty of a mug of hot chocolate with a tablespoon of butter dissolved in it before bed. yum.

then again, its 20 degrees out and i'm still riding a motorcycle. if it gets much colder i'm gonna have to switch to the full face helmet.

WOW Fun Flamefest in the Shop! Jake ... we luv ya, but let it drop.

Lake Louise is AWESOME!! Went out there a few years ago (like 10  )
Skied at Louise, Sunshine and a third (can't remember name, but within hour of the other 2) Skiing in the East can't compare AT ALL to the west. I've skied the best in the East and many different places in the West. West is better ... hands down, no contest.

I've tried boarding a couple times. Took half a day the first time to figure it out. That night was PAINFUL. I had bruises everywhere, but it was a blast. I'm a skier at heart, but I'll board if that's what's being done.

Well, I'm way past quitting time, so I'm outtie! Bye!

You know Wide, at Kicking Horse alot of their terrain used to be Heli ski concesions...if you win the lottery come up and I'll give you a tour of the chutes, they make you piss your pants but are damn fun.

Oh and Jake, your reaction to everything everyone has said is the reason for the age comment...why do you take stuff so seriously?

Pie.. Zeb lives an hour from the Waterville

again... i will not live in the back of my truck in the winter time.. i have the CHOICE to not work up there and live at home.. i chooose to do that..

winter.. you do not know me.. don't generalize and make age assumptions.. if you can flame and be a pain in my ass online then i can be as immature as i'd like to be in my responses.. either play the online persona card or dont but dont try to play both ways because it doesnt work

im taking it seriously because i'm frustrated and pissed off at everything today.. i really wanted this to work out.. i was extremely excited about getting out of my house..

ever get one move away from sending a year long project? thats how i feel right now... really really shitty... thank you winter for making my day so lovely

i won't whine to you about the other issues on my plate that i interalize and do not share here because this is what will happen

Low-wagers can't have their own places, & that's that!

What you need is a warm place to SLEEP - you'll do your livin' on the mountain, right?

Already decided, my eye. You have the freedom to just walk out the door and do anything, and you're gonna sit at home with your folks? Come on, dude! I don't know you from Adam but from this side of the job/family lens your position looks pretty good, and to imagine stagnating at the folks when you're so close to adventure is just maddening.

Sorry if this .02 is unwelcome but hey . . .

good luck

Lein .. i dont care anymore.. people can say whatever they want.. it's not changing my plans..

if i work the same amount of hours down here at Lowes or home depot i will be making 3-4$/hr more... not paying rent and saving it up to move out when a) weather is nicer aka no huge heat bills b) the apartment market is more in my favor

i looked for roomates, rooms for rent, etc.. ive covered all the avenues that i could short of driving street to street through various NH towns (which is 2.5 hours from my house .. i spent a bunch of money on gas trying to make this work.. enough to buy a new rope.. )

what you're all telling me is to Double Down on 18... sure.. i hit a 3 and i'm living it up in style... if not though and odds are very against it.. i'm screwed out of all my money... fuck that
