In reply to:

So you are suggesting that the rope was soaked in battery acid?

no

In reply to:
What is so important about the concentration of acid in a battery? It seems unlikely that the rope (or any rope) was damaged by direct contact with the acid from a car battery. I don't know anyone who transports their ropes in the engine compartment of their car. More likely, if a rope were damaged by battery acid, then the damage would be from the fumes of the acid, not direct contact with the acid.

People have been known to transport used batteries in the trunks of cars. Concentration may be relevant as another clue. If it is shown that it takes a concentration of x% to have serious effect then perhaps acid could be ruled out or in as a possible cause. Acid just happens to be one of the popular suspects in rope failures be they actual or rumored.

In reply to:
But, even assuming that there was chemical contamination, why assume it was battery acid? Indeed, why assume it was acid at all; are there no other solvents that could weaken a rope?

Jay

Good point! Perhaps the owner of the rope can shed some light on the remote possibility of other contaminants.

It's Saturday and I'm online. Somebody plea-he-he-hease make the rain stop!

JIM, JIm, JIm, LOL,

jt really is a big kidder, I swear.

But looking for other rope destroyers ias a good idea, I posed about that on ST and gotr back one that is also common nad worthy of consideration:

Household bleach.

From these two, acid and alkalai, I am going to guess (somewhat educated) that any solution with a very high or a very low PH might be bad for your rope.

There might be others, maybe some solvents, I have noi idea which ones, but I woudl guess ( not educated at all mere SPECULATION), that some of hte pertochemical derivations coudl do it. but I coudl be wrong.

Waht about stuff like lacquer thinner, acetone , carbon tetra chloride, xylene, do thise harm nylon? I have no idea.

Nobody shoud be messing with these anyway, they are really bad for you, but you know how people are.

Boy! Maybe I should find an intern, unpaid of course but they get to keep all the rope they test.

What does it mean when your neighbor is building an ark? I swear we're on about day 28 of rain out of the last 30. We've had a couple of good lightening storms too. Anyone know a lot about cable modems, wireless routers and network adapters? I'm sitting here with some whacked out conflaguration (is that a real word) of cables that seems to get me online but somehow it just ain't right. Ah but I digress......

Haha, that made me laugh. To answer your question, close but not quite. The word you were going for is conflagration, which is something like a large, uncontrollable fire.

More likely, if a rope were damaged by battery acid, then the damage would be from the fumes of the acid, not direct contact with the acid.

People have been known to transport used batteries in the trunks of cars.

What is the mode of contamination in these cases: contact with aqueous acid or contact with acid vapors? I would think that contact with aqueous acid would likely leave obvious visual damage. In contrast, contact with acid vapors reportedly can damage a rope invisibly. If so, then damage by direct contact with acid would likely be caught before the rope was climbed on, leaving acid vapors the more likely cause of any rope failure in which acid was involved.

In reply to:
Concentration may be relevant as another clue. If it is shown that it takes a concentration of x% to have serious effect then perhaps acid could be ruled out or in as a possible cause.

Continuing with my (possibly wrong) reasoning, if acid vapors are the likely cause of an acid-involved rope failure, then it would be the concentration of acid in the air, not in the battery per se, that would be important, a point I was trying to make in my last post.

It would be useful to have a list of the types of chemicals that can damage a rope, to give the owner of the rope a frame of reference, as well as for our own edification. I, myself, am somewhat paranoid about chemical contamination, all the moreso because of my ignorance of the subject. For instance, we are told that gasoline per se does not weaken ropes, but that additives to gasoline might, so I try to keep my ropes away from gasoline and gasoline fumes, perhaps unnecessarily. As another example, my girlfriend stores a rope in a shed that has a strong fertilizer odor. I tell her to throw the rope away, but she (being a chemist) insists that the fumes are harmless. In short, it would be nice to know what kinds of chemicals we should worry about, and which we shouldn't.

I suppose I'm kind of trying to stay away from the chemical contamination issue because there are so many things to consider, plus, I'm not a chemist either.

Something I've noticed about the lists of chemicals that are harmful to nylon, at least from a weakening stand point, is that they rarely address brittleness. A fiber may retain its tenacity but loose some of its flexibility. So the nylon may stay strong as long as you don't bend it. LOL. Now there's a bunch of people staring at this post in total bewilderment going 'WTF, something else to worry about!' Now I'm LMAO because I take out a new rope almost every week!

Well I thought it was funny anyway.

Let's see if I understand you correctly. When you challenge someone else to go "toe to toe" with them where their actual climbing ability is concerned, you are in the right to challenge them. However, when I call you on the same bullshit, I am somehow exposing my 10 year old maturity level. Have I got that pretty much right?

NO way zozo, roofdoof is digging a hole all the way to china, LOL!!

Let's see him get out of this one!!

I still wonder how it is that when Roofdoof makes a climbing challenge it is OK< especially if he knows the person he is challenging is weak as tea right now, but when someone who will totally thrash the roofdoof challenges roofdoof, then it is foul play, or cheap shotting., or juvenile (oops soorry roofdoof, didnpt mean to use a dictionary word on you again.)

For the recoird Roofdoof, I can't even climb 5.8, or for that matter steps very well right now. but i got FAs on slimey wet grown over creap, taht run at 5.11.

You wanna try one?

Or are you one of thos pussy climbers (no offense to teh ladies) who can't touhc a wet rock without peeing your pants?

AANd those are not the hardeset climbs I';ve bee non roofdoof, LOL.

YOU up for some 5.12 trad, southern style? Got one for you.

Only problem is, I dont want to be around your stupid nasty ass.
