In reply to: In reply to: Going on year 32 of climbing I'd caution folks to not "use up" your shoulders unnecessarily if you intend to keep climbing as you age. At some point it does simply become a matter of mileage... Good advice. Going on 69, I have arthritic shoulders, making it unpleasant and almost impossible to reach straight up. Don't overdo it, young'uns! 8^) I've wondered about the injury potential myself. Every once in a while the urge strikes me to work pullups, but after two or three days of doing so, not to my limit but just pumping out ten when I wander by my pullup bar, I get a bit of pain in my elbows. Not wanting to injure myself, I'm always forced to give it a rest for a week or two until the pain stops coming back when I stress my arms. Is there something I'm doing wrong that those of you who know more are doing right, or is that something you simply work through over time? It does seem that when I fully extend, it pops things and hurts a lot more and a lot faster, so I try to lock off before I get too close to the bottom, but even then after a few days of that, it still happens. I'll admit I haven't done much research on the subject, so if someone can point me in the right direction I'll do the rest, and thanks! ;)

Have you cut your legs off to give yourself a weight advantage? You should probably be able to cut 35lbs, so that could be an increase of, say, 30 pull ups. Remember, light is right. Don't worry about not having feet anymore, I'm sure your shoulders and arms are developed enough to propel yourself around with gorilla stylee.

update: Reading stories of Roger Bannister and John Landy hasn't improved my mile times much (they were the first to break the sub-4 minute mile barrier), but I feel like the inspired John Landy of pull ups right now. A new personal best this morning: 675 pull ups in 60 minutes. I felt damn good throughout and was able to keep good form for the most part. I've realized that you can't let up on your concentration throughout the enitre 60 minutes. It's strange. You expect the workouts to get easier as time goes on in your training, but they don't (just the other day a 30 min workout with 12 per minute felt impossible). Today, minutes 11-25 felt the worst and hardest. By minutes 40-60 you're just hoping your arms don't suddenly give out which has happened to me before (virtually with no warning). Breakdown of sets: Minutes 1-50 = 11 pull ups/min (5 and 6 every 30 secs) Minutes 51-55 = 12 pull ups/min (6 and 6 every 30 secs) Minutes 56-60 = 13 pull ups/min (6 and 7 every 30 secs) The 700 pull up barrier is well in range. If a kid that age ran a sub-4 mile those of us that run would have heard about it in the running rags. sooo nawwwww, he's out of there. A decent time for a high school kid would be 16 minutes (the team I was on was third in the state when I was a kid and our top 7 runners all ran 16 min (+/- 10 sec) for 5K, actually we had 10 runners on our team that could do that. A really talented high school runner will do it in 15min, and a decent college runner will do it in 14:30.... Nothing to do with climbing or pull ups but just a point of reference for the BSer posting above.

Well, Mr Expert, why the hell do you think what a 17 year old kid living in a town you've never heard of in a country that's not America would be known in the US? Piss off with your calls of BS! FYI he had never competed in any athletic meets nor had an official time. All he has ever done is what he loves: Train for Australian Rules Football. It was not until the State High School Sports meet when he just turned up and won everything including the Steeple chase (even though he ran the first lap behind the others so he knew what to do for the rest of the race and still won by more than half a lap) that anyone noticed him. He was immediately picked up for the State Team but has quit because football season has started again. He plays in the Division 1 men's team and in current pre-season 15 minute time trials he is lapping the adult coming second. So shut up unless you know the abilities of every single child athlete in the world, JERK Adam

Hasbeen, can you do a one-arm? Just curious--It seems like if you can do that many pullups, you should be able to do a one-armer.

Reading this thread has made me wonder if the quality of posts have been steadily going downhill over time, or if this is simply a classic example of thread decay from a lack of brushing. Either way, all of these feats are unbelievable to me. I'm working on 20 consecutive, and I was feeling good that I was getting close. Of course, we're all at different stages at different times, but 700 in an hour - holy balls.

http://gravsports.com/Climbing%20Stories/climbing.htm We used to train at the same gym in college. I could swear I've seen him do 600 pullups as a warmup. Interesting how he ends up disavowing the whole pullup thing.

All I can say is wow. I thought I could crank push-ups and pull-ups out at one point in my health craze stage but ....man that is a lot! Now, maybe 40 pull-ups to full enxtension and 100 push-ups at the rate of a full second a piece.
http://gravsports.com/Climbing%20Stories/climbing.htm
It is true climbing strength will develop if you climb more. But if you train intelligently (this includes avoiding injury) you'll get stronger much faster. Pull-up strength has nothing to do with climbing (relatively), it's all about finger strength. He trained his lats, biceps, etc. instead of his forearms. Climbing strength (not strength) is very important to climbing. Strength is bad for climbing, it just adds weights.
