Alright. I am bored as hell right now, so I decided to ask a question just to hear peoples out look on these climbers. I know everybody wants to be there own climber, but if someone asked you if you wanted to be Chris Sharma or Dean Potter who would you be.......I only chose these two climber because they are well known. Thanks

Maybe it's because I'm probably way older than the rest of you and have tested my mortality numerous times, but I'd take Sharma any day. Chances are he will live longer.

Chris Sharma- 15a, V15/16, 14a onsite Dean Potter- Half Dome and El Cap in a day, speed and solo specialist, slack line specialist Pretty tough call...but I'd rather be Dean Potter. Although somewhat of a troll...interesting topic. It would be a harder decision if you threw in Tommy Caldwell (who I think is just the man as an all around climber).

Hmm...with all due respect I wouldn't define Tommy "the king" Caldwell as * just* a trad climber. He does it all dude, and really really well! Potter BTW.

Chances are Sharma has a good chance of living longer. He is also a very centered individual. Caldwell is amazing. An all around climber who has a great wife who is an exceptional partner. But there's something about Dean. His Zest for adventure.

That makes him a tradster! It's perfectly fine for someone like Potter or Caldwell to be a well-rounded climber- that's why I would rather be them. Besides, one can argue that their stuff is just as hard as anything Sharma has done. When will Sharma ever free a big wall? huh huh huh huh :?:

Plus I was amazed at watching Dean Speed Solo up El' Cap on the DVD. His only words said were while he passed by someone on anchor at a traverse......."Don't touch me"

I guess from things I have read he actually enjoys a good amount of bouldering as well. I'm also very impressed with the fact that his loss of a finger did not effect his climbing at all.

I'd go with Potter, that man has a gift for saving his own ass in certain death situations. You guys read his article in Alpinist? Base jumping into a 1200ft sink hole, and escaping death by some obsurd miracle. Anyone who has ever gotten bad rope burn on their hands will really be amazed. The article is written by him and is a must read. Potter is also a hometown boy, went to high school with his cousins, and he gave me some secret bouldering places last time I met him.

There was this one time I wore an assjacket.... I think Sharma, but I'd rather meet him than be him. Personally, Sharma's been an icon for me since i've started, and spending a day on the rocks with him would definately be awesome, though i couldn't do half the stuff he can.

Secondly, I want a reason to use this icon because it's my favorite: (in reference to this topic, although I do enjoy reading about climbers in general, I don't spend hours debating the merits of existing as one or another different person) :boring:

In reply to: y'all sound like a couple eight year old kids arguing over whether it would be cooler to be batman or superman. like whoa, batman's dark and moody and s---, but superman can actually fly! wheeee!!!!!! First, you have to consider that the Dark Knight has a really damaged psyche. He can have no rest from his demons, both internal and external. The amazing thing about the Batman is how far his pushes himself beyond normal human bounds. He's exceptional, but he's a soul that can never really be at peace. The fact that he is a human consumed by suffering makes him a much more relatable character than Superman. Then there's Kal-El, one of the last survivors of a destroyed world. His powers are legendary, but he's always seemed too strong. Both the laser eyes and freezing breath? Flight, strength, virtual invulnerability? X-ray vision? No wonder his enemies have to be out of this world. He's such the good guy that it's annoying. And yet there has to be this underlying sense of isolation defending a world he's not a part of. In short, neither. (Sorry, old comics geek.)

first off: this thread is lame. second off: yall are missing something big; the real deal is alpinism, and in that the real deal is patagonia, and Dean tore that place a new arschhole. i don't care much for sharma, thats not real climbing to me, and tommy kicks some big wall arse, but speed soloing the nastiest alpine peaks on the planet as well as big walling and crack climbing like a motherfugger means potters da man.

I've had the opportuinty to meet Sharma once (we're not bros or anything...) He's a real nice guy. Seems like the kind of guy I'd like to hang out at a crag with. But I'd have to say either Potter of Caldwell. Trad for sure... But I kinda like being me. My life is pretty fulfilling as it is.

I don't know a whole lot about potter but everyone says sharma will live longer. With sharma doing a lot of DWS(deep water soloing) that might change. If he is doing 120 foot problems and he lands in the water wrong that could kill you very easily and he has been doing a lot of high up120+ 13's

In reply to: lol, love the new safety for old thread resurrection. Perhaps this topic has relevance now? Naw, no one's going to drop Potter from their all time favorite list just because he cheesed off a few NPS officials... My vote, BTW, would still be for Sharma, though. Dig that whole Zen Bhuddist approach that he takes towards climbing. Steve House for all-around climbing/mountaineering; Sure, Potter has climbed in Patagonia, but are either Potter or Sharma climbing 5.13 and putting up huge alpine routes in Alaska and abroad? Regards, Edd

Sharma without a doubt. V15 accents, First 5.15, and modest during all of it. and most people dont realize but sharma has sent 5.13 trad. so he's up there with potter on trad too.

There are to many fucking people saying "this thread is stoooopid" like some retarded emo child. Be your own hero sure, thats not the fucking question. It is just a thread for kicks, its not some serious life decision. Sharma, and yea his girlfriend is hotter, and does handstands, alot.

Who would I rather be? Well it depends, if I could become one of them and take over their life as I saw fit, I would say I'd be Potter because I enjoy the aspects of trad climbing very much, however I am very much against the sport of soloing, so I unfortunately do not have much respect for him as a climber because I do not believe that soloing is something that is ever worth participating in, and the glorification and popularization of it pretty much sickens me. So I would be Potter if I could take all his climbing prowess and knowledge and just stop soloing and just climb with protection. If I had to continue on the same path as these people are going in their lives, I would be Sharma because like others have said, I have a much greater chance of living for longer, and I wouldn't be promoting something I am adamantly against. Feel free to flame me if you feel differently about solo climbing, but you will never justify in my mind the sense behind putting everything on the line to make it up a large piece of rock, no fame nor fortune nor mental spiritual experience can ever justifying risking your life for such an insignificant goal, and no climb, no matter how ground-breaking, is ever significant enough to ask for one's life.

Potter is an a-hole, not for climbing the arch but for having pictures taken. If you loves the rock that much then by all means go on and climb it, I'm down for the adventure but don't make your stupid stunts public. When Potter climbs Witness the Fitness, then I'll be impressed Sharma all the way!

Didn't Potter climb just about everything in Patagonia as well? With -30 degrees and windchill + snow bearing down on him the whole time? He is the Bo Jackson of climbing. Perhaps the greatest ever. Oh, and Wasn't he working on sending a bouldering problem at the top of Half Dome. Where he scoots over the edge, downclimbs 30 feet, and THEN starts the problem? haha what a nut. Yeah Potter is pure awesome. Chris is a super strong gym/sport junkie which is fine, but Potter is the whole spectrum.

I think an interesting question though is do you think that if Sharma wanted to climb trad and speed and solo, he could? But then can you see Dean Potter sending Realization, the Never Ending Story, Witness the Fitness, and flashing through the crux of the Fly? I think I could see Sharma hiking up El Cap, but I really have trouble seeing Potter hike the Fly.

I think that you are trying to compare two different styles of climbing to get a justified answer. Both are good at what they do. I would say that preference is going to be towards the style which you currently or aspire to climb...

f*** dean potter. his skinny lil butt couldnt get half way through realization. once potter sends 15a or v15 then ill give him a look. yes dean potter is one of the best all around climbers in the world but i think the best climber should be the one setting the standard for hard routes. speed is a whole different ball game. SHARMA!!!

hard choices for me at 33 - potter? sharma? tommy? wish i had started years ago - im very impressed by all of them - i can only hope to aspire to what they have done.. not for numbers or such but rather for the fact that they are re-inventing climbing (fat fingered tommy on el cap - they said it couldnt be done! he did it)

In reply to: but rather for the fact that they are re-inventing climbing the last time climbing got "reinvented" -- both free and aid -- was 1964 through 1968. with a small tip of the hat to SoCal 1973 - 1976. clue up, kid.

huh lets see dean i a badass but sharma has more natural endurance than probably anyone in the world and he is obviously crzy strong( realization, +V15/16) so i think that if sharma cared in the least about being known and climbed for grades he would destroy potter even on trad, hands down sharma. I cant beleive so many people chose potter sharma is obviously strong, sigh*tradies*

I look at this maybe from an odd point of view, which video is more entertaining to you, Masters of Stone 5 or dosage 3? for me its MOS5 but for my dear little brother its Dosage, but perhaps I will enjoy Dosage 5 more than MOS5, but then again i've never seen MOS3, mabye I would like that equally to Dosage 3 :? would I then care for each climber equally? hmmm... And does that make me a bad person?hmmm... :? :?
