Special ger!! I want some special ger... maybe I'd climb better... and I know free-soloists are the coolest people alive and therefore would win every spelling bee they were ever in but... I remember somethuing being spelled different... specifically without the unnecessary 'u' in there... is it a silent 'u'? ... hmm... If I wasn't spending all my time using all that silly pussy ger of mine, I might have time to check out a dictionary myself... or somethuing... :)

I can't think of a single argument supporting soloing that doesn't rely on a blindfold made out of ego. its fun and makes a greater challenge to overcome... it is also fast and efficient and doesnt require other climbers in your area... you also dont have to trust your life to anyone but yourself (i dont care about that last one, I usually climb with a partner) If you're soloing a route, you have no safety other than your skills and strength. Betting your abilities are sound with your life = pretty freaking egotistic. Arguing that it's not = even more egotistic. Tell me I'm wrong. I dare you.

What I mean by "the culture" is that you are not yet one of the guys. There are other threads where people have discussed free soloing. Once you find them, read several from top to bottom. You will see three general positions: 1. Never free solo, 2. If you do free solo, don't tell anyone, and 3. Free solo and who cares who knows.

A blatant n00b needs to get a ration of crap. It's good for your soul and it can be very cathartic to the crapper. I think if you do more reading and do the search, you will find more acceptance.

Thanks for reviving this for the update. It was fun tag teaming with sty (Darryl). I wish I had been able to meet him in person.
IMHO: Roped soloing (TR/leading) is a personal decision, but one that is made safer by open discussion about tools and techniques. I'm glad that the subject is acceptable, with or without a dedicated thread.
Free soloing is done alone, and should not be glamorized. Neither should it be criticized, because it is such a personal thing. It is your ass on the line and your decision. That said, every climbing death harms the sport, but the risk, the Risk...
