Well the votes have been counted and it is indeed considered to be the best of the previous decade. And by a respecable margin too.

Film Critics Pick the Best Movies of the Decade

Mostly I agree with the list. TESOTSM seems a bit high and Lost In Translation way too low but it's mostly good.

I feel like there were way better movies last decade than all 3 LOTR. One, sure, but the whole shebang?

I'm a bit ambivalent about that whole deal myself. The problem is that none of the individual movies are truly outstanding but the trilogy as a whole is really impressive. So it does deserve a slot in the top 10 but not 3.

I was genuinely surprised and impressed by the new Harry Potter movie.

Seriously. This is the first time in the series that I don't find myself thinking "It was pretty good for that kind of movie". No qualifications needed this time round. I thought it was beautifully shot, perfectly paced and even had some intersting subtext. I've always liked the story but thught that the script and production quality was lacking. Not anymore.

I really dug it.

Watching Bug right now. Sooooo good!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470705/

Peter Evans: Listen! Listen! If you want to know what is going on, you have to listen to me! You have to! Because you don't know the fucking ENORMITY of what we're dealing with! Listen: May 29th, 1954, the consortium of bankers, industrialists, corporate CEO's and politicians held a series of meetings over three days at the Bilderberg Hotel in Oosterbeek, Holland... they drew up a plan for maintaining the "status quo."

Agnes White: What's that?

Peter Evans: It's "the way things are" - it's "the rich get richer, the poor get poorer." They devised a plan to manipulate technology, economics, the media, population control, world religion, to keep things the way they are. And they have continued to meet once a year, every year, since the original meeting. Look it up! Under their orders, the CIA had smuggled Nazi scientists into the States to work with the American military and Calspan, developing an inter-epidermal tracking microchip.

Agnes White: A what?

Peter Evans: It's a surveillance tool. It's a microchip that's been implanted in the skin of every human being born on the planet since 1982. The test group for the prototype was the People's Temple! And when the Reverend Jim Jones threatened to expose them, he and every member of his church were assassinated!

The last two days have been good ones, as I've watched one near perfect movie and one flawless movie all but back to back.

Saw Antichrist (it's on Netflix instant watch) Wed. night and pretty much had my hair blown back. It's definitely arthouse fare with a strong surrealist bent but what makes it stand out IMO, is the production quality and the performances. Everyone involved was at the very top of their game, especially Gainsbourg who is inthralling. Never has such an unrelenting bombardment of harrowing and brutal imagery been so, so beautiful.

The second was Haneke's The White Ribbon. I think it's a new highwater mark for him, one that comes in well above The Piano Teacher and Funny Games. The real difference here is the maturity in craftsmanship. Some artists are a bit scattershot through out their careers and others continually evolve and yet others doggedly refine their style until a day comes when you get pure essence. The latter, in many ways, is Haneke and The White Ribbon. It's at the top of my list for best of the year for sure.

Also watched Donkey Punch earlier today, was better than one would assume based on the title. It was pointless and predictable for sure but those qualities often go hand in hand with fun and entertaining. Which it was.

Not very creepy at all.

Not too sad or violent or dramatic or anything else really. In many ways it's an exercise in restraint that very carefully avoids minimalism. Bergmanesque but not so heavy handedly allegorical.

Have you watched any of his other movies? Any favorites?

Also, has anyone seen Black Swan yet? Richmond has zero appreciation for the arts, so it hasn't shown up here yet.Mad

So, I went and saw Tron Legacy in 3D on the weekend. Quite impressive really. Of course, being an old Tron fan (I was around 10 or so when it came out) I was open to a simple storyline but I felt the new one did the old one plenty of justice. The story is good enough... I mean, it's an 80's fictional computer world.... and I think they kept true to the original theme really well.

It was nice to see "relics" from that era... the Asteroids game in the arcade, the Black Hole movie poster and the REALLY old gaming hand console. The even threw Journey in there.

Its not necessary I think to go and see it in 3D, but if you don't mind the eye strain it's well worth it for some of the scenes... has a real matrix/GIjoe video game feel. The music is some kind of fusion with the old 80's action techno, kinda like what you hear in the original Terminator and of course the old Tron. I like that they kept that feel from the original.

The vehicle concepts are outrageous but very cool, and I was waiting for a tank battle, which unfortunately never eventuated. I didn't like the "bar" scene, as I doubt computer programs would find themselves out getting trashed, but it made an apt environment for the "Bowie-like" dude. Of course there's plenty of hot women in tight body suits (not quite like these though - NSFW!), which are always welcomed!

Overall a thumbs up... and the possibilities are left open for another... of course, this is Hollywood.

Haven't seen Tron yet. They just opened a "Cinebistro" nearby and I was thinking that might be the right kind of movie to watch in that environment. Don't know if I'd want to be eating food and talking to waitresses while trying to watch The Fighter or something but Tron would be cool.

I was wrong about Black Swan though, it is here and I saw it last night. It was damn intense and damn good but I'm not sure I'd say "great". Might have to watch it again to get a better feel for it. I will say this though...it should be watched in the theater if possible because the soundtrack is AMAZING on their sound system. I read that much of it was adapted from Swan Lake and it was just beautiful.

Natalie Portman - 2011 Oscar FTW!

Well I'll be damned. The Coen Brothers very quietly and successfully made a kids movie. Perhaps a bit too quietly, as I suspect they missed out on some 12-16 year old ticket sales and may get an undeserved oscar nod.

Damn fine movie though. I think the last time I laughed that much in the theater was when I watched Super Bad. Fell in love with the new Mattie Ross too. Perfect pairing of dialogue and actress.

I saw Black Swan over the holidays. I'm still in awe.
The intertwining of Swan Lake and the dancers on and off stage was great. At some points I had a feeling that some things were a bit trite - but the way it all came together - wow.

Highly recommended.

If, long about 9:30 tonight, you hear a cry of rage and indignation echoing across the land, you will know that both Inception has won Best Picture and that Bryan's pantz have been thoroughly soiled.

That is all.
