For the next 2 nights the Echo-Challange is on. I think it's from 9-10 or 10-11. I know you will get it with a satellite dish. Climbing, hiking, Kayaking... It motivates me and check it out, I think it will get you're blood going.

The competition looks fun, but have you seen the follow-ups on the participants? Good grief all the parasites/germies they get! Yuck yuck yuck...no thanks!

Adventure Racing KICKS ASS!!!! I did one last year, it was sooo fun. It was a short one - we raced for 22 hours and DNF'd (failed to find a checkpoint in the dark and snow). Wish I could do more, but it really requires a lot of training time. My nose partner bailed on me because he's training for Primal Quest and doesn't have time to climb. You gotta pick your priorities, I guess. :) Anna

I have done 3 adventure races, in the past 2 years, and are going to do another at the end of summer. they are a lot of fun, but you have to train really hard, a lot harder then you do if you want to climb a 5.13 or any thing like that. But it's worth it. also the eco-challene is the one of top 3 hardest adventure races in the word. later DaggerX

Ill bet the promoters had a clause that they would be carted via plane close to the finish just to keep them on tv. [edit] kill your tv, its ruining humanity.

Their teammate, Roman Dial, is a very experienced expedition climber (among many other achievements), but it didn't appear that he was carrying or dominating the group. Let's set stereotypes aside and give credit where credit is due.

Sorry, I think im more angry at tv stations for putting on stupid shi+ like the smirnoff ice playboy plamtaes to get viewers for such a show. I dont care whether they can make it across the finish line or not. Tv is in a sad state and it makes me want to cry.

As I understand it the big five organizers are: the Raid Gauloises, the Southern Traverse, the Elf Authentic Adventure, the Subaru Primal Quest and the Eco-Challenge. Elf came out of a Raid management split. Raid and Southern Traverse are the oldest. Eco has "a habit of upstaging the competition by scheduling races head-to-head with competitors, and even scheduling a race on a rival's home turf weeks apart from the long-established, local event." According to SleepMonsters.com Eco will not be run this year and Primal Quest announced "a major TV deal which they say is 'the highest-profile appearance of this young sport since its inception in 1989.'" As far as I can tell the Adventure racing world is even more Soap Operetic than the climbing world.

http://www.csmevents.com/adventure_racing.html I did one from that series last year, it's called Cal Eco, my team mates are Team Seagate Adventure, they are doing really well (without me!) (I was a stand-in for an injured team member). Here's a bunch of links: http://members.attcanada.ca/~ceaston/adventure.html Race on!

In reply to: As far as I can tell the Adventure racing world is even more Soap Operetic than the climbing world. It is, and certainly the Eco Challenge in particular plays up that aspect in its made-for-TV format. It's an entertainment, for us couch potatoes -- but a good entertainment, don't you think? I find myself watching it year after year, and wish the format was longer to tell us more about the "other" teams they don't select for spotlight treatment. Most of the 10 teams that finished were among those others; never mentioned until their 5 second clips at the finish. And each year, we see some onscreen mental meltdowns from people who shouldn't be there. What's more interesting to me is the sight of other folks who might seem like they "shouldn't be there," (this year, we had actors and reality-show contestants as well as models) but who keep their will and good humor thrashing uphill through the thorn bushes or getting hypothermic in the river just like everyone else. They're at a different skill level than the top athletes who train for years hoping to win, but still accomplishing a difficult thing.

Last years was the best (New Zealand I think?).....when the Brazillian girls and their stooge of a male (the navigator) got them sooooo lost.....and the girls bitchin at him the rest of the race!!! Fiji....No F__KIN WAY!!! I think a that one team that had to stay in the village (Team MadRiver!!) I think...said they would come back and visit....HA...HA...AH...yeah right!!

In reply to: As far as I can tell the Adventure racing world is even more Soap Operetic than the climbing world. one additional note...please don't think this. it is not necessarily true. it is a great sport, and i love it. through the years, it has been hard to get sponsors to put these things on, and i think that explains the excitement about coverage, etc. granted, there are those out there who glam it up :? and the eco-challenge is one of the top at this. sometimes i even snarl and scoff at the tv as i, of course, sit watching it. i am amazed how that man (burnett) makes it more into a soap opera every year. being said, every sport's world has this unfortunate side-effect, including AR and climbing, but we're definitely not all like that, right? thank goodness!

wow, i'm a posting fool today... that's great bob! i have been racing for several years, but not with an official team. last year a few of us hardheaded crazies sat down and are in the process of working our way to the eco or something like it....really anything, we love the sport. likely it will take a couple of years. we are team ascension. we had a good run last year and are trying bigger, better races this year with the hope of improving more. the main thing is $$$ sooo, we're hoping if this year goes great, we'll be able to land some sponsorship. as for your daughter, i think that's great. there is so much that can go into it depending to what level you want to compete. i would be happy to elaborate more sometime next week. i'm trying to finish up here at work and get out early so i can finish preparing for a race i have this weekend! just let me know...

In reply to: As far as I can tell the Adventure racing world is even more Soap Operetic than the climbing world. Actually I was not referring to the TV side portrayal of Adventure Racing, but the more internal squabbles between organizers and competitors. The kind of stuff we see play out here on rc.com. There is also a fair amount of bad blood between certain organizers. I would say this is about par for the course of a new sport that's beginning to catch the attention of big media and money. I think it is a great sport that will continue to grow and create a more definitive identity for itself. Though I don't race myself, my brother competes at a fairly high level. If you're interested check out his team at: www.teamnomad.com/ Argurl, good luck with team ascension. I know how tough the sponsorship thing can be.

The guy who was on last night talking about how cuts in Fiji get infected without treatment in 24 hours was Mike Waugh, who is on the cover of Sherman's Better Bouldering book and is also a very accomplished climber, somewhat of a legend here in SoCal...

So nice! I wish I could go some day!!! :) Actually I have a good friend who was in this eco challenge, she's from Costa Rica, and when she was back she told me all about it, she says it is so danm hard to finish. Her couldn't because her captain broke his toe, but they almost made it, but still the adventure was amazing.

Mark Burnett is the Producer/Creator of Survivor and Eco-Challenge, he's a former adventure racer himself having competed in the Raid Gauloises. He has made Gerard Fusil's race format (the Raid) more television friendly. I think that Burnett got the idea for Survivor out of the apparent fact that in an early broadcast of Eco-C, when tested, viewers enjoyed the bickering and team in-fighting under duress the most. Human nature, isn't it grand?
