In reply to: As far as I can tell the Adventure racing world is even more Soap Operetic than the climbing world. one additional note...please don't think this. it is not necessarily true. it is a great sport, and i love it. through the years, it has been hard to get sponsors to put these things on, and i think that explains the excitement about coverage, etc. granted, there are those out there who glam it up :? and the eco-challenge is one of the top at this. sometimes i even snarl and scoff at the tv as i, of course, sit watching it. i am amazed how that man (burnett) makes it more into a soap opera every year. being said, every sport's world has this unfortunate side-effect, including AR and climbing, but we're definitely not all like that, right? thank goodness!

The final episode was on last night...but I'm sure they will play re-runs especially over the weekend. It's on the USA channel.

wow, i'm a posting fool today... that's great bob! i have been racing for several years, but not with an official team. last year a few of us hardheaded crazies sat down and are in the process of working our way to the eco or something like it....really anything, we love the sport. likely it will take a couple of years. we are team ascension. we had a good run last year and are trying bigger, better races this year with the hope of improving more. the main thing is $$$ sooo, we're hoping if this year goes great, we'll be able to land some sponsorship. as for your daughter, i think that's great. there is so much that can go into it depending to what level you want to compete. i would be happy to elaborate more sometime next week. i'm trying to finish up here at work and get out early so i can finish preparing for a race i have this weekend! just let me know...

In reply to: As far as I can tell the Adventure racing world is even more Soap Operetic than the climbing world. Actually I was not referring to the TV side portrayal of Adventure Racing, but the more internal squabbles between organizers and competitors. The kind of stuff we see play out here on rc.com. There is also a fair amount of bad blood between certain organizers. I would say this is about par for the course of a new sport that's beginning to catch the attention of big media and money. I think it is a great sport that will continue to grow and create a more definitive identity for itself. Though I don't race myself, my brother competes at a fairly high level. If you're interested check out his team at: www.teamnomad.com/ Argurl, good luck with team ascension. I know how tough the sponsorship thing can be.

The guy who was on last night talking about how cuts in Fiji get infected without treatment in 24 hours was Mike Waugh, who is on the cover of Sherman's Better Bouldering book and is also a very accomplished climber, somewhat of a legend here in SoCal...

[quote="valygrl"]Adventure Racing KICKS ASS!!!! I did one last year, it was sooo fun. It was a short one - we raced for 22 hours and DNF'd (failed to find a checkpoint in the dark and snow). Wish I could do more, but it really requires a lot of training time. My nose partner bailed on me because he's training for Primal Quest and doesn't have time to climb. You gotta pick your priorities, I guess. :) AnnaPrimal Quest !! That's my big wall bro...... Do yo know Dan Barger ?? Ca. sports ????

So nice! I wish I could go some day!!! :) Actually I have a good friend who was in this eco challenge, she's from Costa Rica, and when she was back she told me all about it, she says it is so danm hard to finish. Her couldn't because her captain broke his toe, but they almost made it, but still the adventure was amazing.

Eco Challenge is no joke. I can't believe the suffering these people go through! This year (Fiji) only 10 teams out of 89 even finished the race!!! How do I sign up!!!

In reply to: As far as I can tell the Adventure racing world is even more Soap Operetic than the climbing world. Well...you know who is the director of Eco-Challenge? It's the same guy that puts on the Survivor TV shows. I can't think of his name right now but check it out. That should tel you why the Eco is filmed the way it is. Bryan

Mark Burnett is the Producer/Creator of Survivor and Eco-Challenge, he's a former adventure racer himself having competed in the Raid Gauloises. He has made Gerard Fusil's race format (the Raid) more television friendly. I think that Burnett got the idea for Survivor out of the apparent fact that in an early broadcast of Eco-C, when tested, viewers enjoyed the bickering and team in-fighting under duress the most. Human nature, isn't it grand?
