For the next 2 nights the Echo-Challange is on. I think it's from 9-10 or
10-11. I know you will get it with a satellite dish. Climbing, hiking, Kayaking... It motivates me and check it out, I
think it will get you're blood going.

The competition looks fun, but have you seen the follow-ups on the participants? Good grief all the parasites/germies they get! Yuck yuck yuck...no thanks!

I usually don't take the time to watch but I did last night. Even with all the "blood-letting" it looked like a lot of fun.

Agh! My local listings show it on at 1am and 4am for the next two nights...

I'm so sick of the good stuff taking a back seat to Arena Football...

Adventure Racing KICKS ASS!!!! I did one last year, it was sooo fun. It was a short one - we raced for 22 hours and DNF'd (failed to find a checkpoint in the dark and snow). Wish I could do more, but it really requires a lot of training time. My nose partner bailed on me because he's training for Primal Quest and doesn't have time to climb.

You gotta pick your priorities, I guess.

I have done 3 adventure races, in the past 2 years, and are going to do another at the end of summer. they are a lot of fun, but you have to train really hard, a lot harder then you do if you want to climb a 5.13 or any thing like that. But it's worth it.

also the eco-challene is the one of top 3 hardest adventure races in the word.

The Raid Gauloises is extremely intense, but not as TV-friendly IIRC. What's another really tough, famous race?

Kein, The other race I was talking about is the El' rapise challange last year it was in the rain forest. The fastest team made it to the finish line in like 11days or so. I have a buddy training for it.

I wana know how the smirnoff playboy plamates team made it farther than most other teams. Ill bet the promoters had a clause that they would be carted via plane close to the finish just to keep them on tv.

[edit] kill your tv, its ruining humanity.

If you watched the last show you know how hard those women pushed themselves. Their teammate, Roman Dial, is a very experienced expedition climber (among many other achievements), but it didn't appear that he was carrying or dominating the group. Let's set stereotypes aside and give credit where credit is due.

Sorry, I think im more angry at tv stations for putting on stupid shi+ like the smirnoff ice playboy plamtaes to get viewers for such a show. I dont care whether they can make it across the finish line or not. Tv is in a sad state and it makes me want to cry.

As I understand it the big five organizers are: the Raid Gauloises, the Southern Traverse, the Elf Authentic Adventure, the Subaru Primal Quest and the Eco-Challenge. Elf came out of a Raid management split. Raid and Southern Traverse are the oldest. Eco has "a habit of upstaging the competition by scheduling races head-to-head with competitors, and even scheduling a race on a rival's home turf weeks apart from the long-established, local event."

According to SleepMonsters.com Eco will not be run this year and Primal Quest announced "a major TV deal which they say is 'the highest-profile appearance of this young sport since its inception in 1989.'"

As far as I can tell the Adventure racing world is even more Soap Operetic than the climbing world.

I did one from that series last year, it's called Cal Eco, my team mates are Team Seagate Adventure, they are doing really well (without me!) (I was a stand-in for an injured team member).

Here's a bunch of links:

It is, and certainly the Eco Challenge in particular plays up that aspect in its made-for-TV format. It's an entertainment, for us couch potatoes -- but a good entertainment, don't you think? I find myself watching it year after year, and wish the format was longer to tell us more about the "other" teams they don't select for spotlight treatment. Most of the 10 teams that finished were among those others; never mentioned until their 5 second clips at the finish.

And each year, we see some onscreen mental meltdowns from people who shouldn't be there. What's more interesting to me is the sight of other folks who might seem like they "shouldn't be there," (this year, we had actors and reality-show contestants as well as models) but who keep their will and good humor thrashing uphill through the thorn bushes or getting hypothermic in the river just like everyone else. They're at a different skill level than the top athletes who train for years hoping to win, but still accomplishing a difficult thing.

Fiji Eco-Challenge was INSANE.....!! I have NO desire to go there now, for fear of infection, vomiting fits, and diahrea!!

Last years was the best (New Zealand I think?).....when the Brazillian girls and their stooge of a male (the navigator) got them sooooo lost.....and the girls bitchin at him the rest of the race!!!

Fiji....No F__KIN WAY!!! I think a that one team that had to stay in the village (Team MadRiver!!) I think...said they would come back and visit....HA...HA...AH...yeah right!!
