Hey folks! (I know, its not quite June yet but I'm giving someone some links and wanted the June up to link it)
Summer; is it finally here? Man, I hope so!!!

Anyway, lots of stuff happening... Climbing every week/end, VE (hopefully not often) when it rains, and of course, the2nd Annual Minnesota Gathering is right around the corner at the end of the month... I can't wait!

There are people recently joined the site here so, we should all have plenty of new friends to hook up with and CLIMB!

As for this weekend, fo_d and I will be at the Bluff all day Saturday. And guess what? rockhugger says he's coming out to climb with us... Yep! he's coming out of the dark, muddy, sloppy, damp, cave-life with kurt, back out into the sunlight and onto the heights again... Now if we can get kurt to stay outta those damn caves... Yeah! Right...

Anyway, post-up all your June plans people!

(sorry Les, I didn't mean to jump the gun on ya! gotta noob in Apple Valley I wanted to send the link to... every one welcome maddog)

Aren't we getting a little ahead of ourselves here? It isn't June until tomorrow, or is my calendar slow?

Anyway... I hope you all had a good time today. I had to stay at home with a sick baby and then I had to mow the lawn. What a bummer. I am sure something will come up next weekend too. Anyway. I am glad that Jeff (rockhugger) finally got out again.

How did the church group go? I would like to lead a group from my church some time. Climbing is definitely a spiritual thing for me, and it would be nice to share this with others. I would definitely be interested in how you went about setting it up Les (fo_d).

Still looking forward to Blue Mound...

BTW... There is a big group fromVE going next weekend to Shovel Point if anyone is interested. I still have to work out the details to see if I can go, but hook up with Kurt if you are interested.

Hey I got that workout for sure today,if your 5.7's are that tough I'd hate to see a 5.9! I'm happy with the amount of climbing I got in today and I'm very happy about the way I was climbing today especially after sitting around for two months.

Sorry! Apparently you didn't read the first line of my first post... That was where I appoligised for putting June up early because I wanted to send someone the link...

We were wondering where you were!?!?!?! Thought for sure we'd see ya there...

In reply to:

It went very good! We actually had one guy come for a second time (he was there 2 weeks ago too), we had two climbers who were relative naturals who both made it up Left Lane, and a real climber who'd climbed near us a good portion of the morning tell us he really thought we ran our group well... WOW, I was impressed!

In reply to:

Me too! In fact I can't wait!!! Are you bringing your girls Patrick? I was thinking of maybe bringing just Kali... She likes to go camping (but I don't want to have to bring Alyssa and have to keep an eye on her the whole time).

Anyway, beautiful day... A little breezy and cool, but nice and sunny...

Monday at VE... see yall then...

Hey guys! Yeah, that was a super day on Saturday at the bluff. I love that rock; much better than Blue Mounds, I think, which I found very slick. I was sticking to this stuff much better.

So much better in fact, that I toproped, led with quickdraws in place, and then led putting up my own quickdraws Cinq Jour D'Affile without ONE fall or take!!! I was purdy darn happy with myself. This was my first outdoor lead. I also did Sunburst which Dann had recommended, but sadly didn't quite finish. I found the route overall to be about the same difficulty, but the very last move to clip into the anchor is tricky. I did it fine on toprope, but just coudn't get up the gumption to do the same stemmy move six feet above the last bolt. Ah well. I didn't fall or take to that point, so that was still pretty good.

Sadly, we left fairly early; Bert got discouraged after trying to trad lead Jam and Jelly; I think he's siding with Les in saying it's hard, rather than Dann who thinks it's doable. (We gotta see you do it sometime, Dann, since it looked like a b!tch....)

All in all, an excellent day. I was kickin' ass and takin' names. I'm at VE tonight by myself, so anyone can team up with me. Tim? You still going?

Paula.

Man, oh Man! I just moved to Florida from Minnesota and REALLY miss climbing.

I don't know if I know anyone from this board, but I used to climb at the gym "Footprints" (formerly Peak) nearly every other day religiously since it first opened until it went out of business. I practically lived out of my van at Taylors or Barn Bluff for years.

Anybody here that I know? Does this jog anyone's memory?

- I used to climb with my boy Garrett who is blind and climbs barefoot.
- My friend Dan and I used to hang out with/annoy Brian Lounsbury, Pat, Melissa Quigley (I think I annoyed her more than climbed with her), Jesse Shalk (a master of slopped holds), etc.
- I'm about 6'1" and have to put up with shorter climbers complaining that I can reach holds instead of having to dyno for them. :x (sorry, but shorter climbers have a huge advantage on scrunchy moves and slopers).
- If you went to "Footprints" or "Peak" I probably begged a belay off of you for doing "The Wave" (or if you ever climbed at Taylors)
- I'm skinny

I'm looking to make it to Colorado later this summer and would love to hook up with someone.

Let me know.

GT

p.s.
Florida sucks for climbers. :? I want to start a gym!

Nice job Saturday pj! Bert too! I thought for sure he'd be able to do Jam & Jelly after he "ran" up Freebase on gear... Ya know Jam & Jelly is a 5.7 and Freebase is 5.9- right?

Honestly, I shouldn't have let fo_d show/describe/talk-you-out-of Jam & Jelly in the first place... I'm still having trouble talking him into leading it... Anyhow, I'd be more than happy to lead it for you and let you T-R it a couple times so you guys can get the feel for it. The first 20ft. are a bit intimidating if you haven't climbed it before.

I can't wait to try Cooler Crack and see what you guys think of that!

And pj, too bad you didn't get the red point on Sunburst! You KNOW you could have done it right? That last move is a bit commiting but there are a couple tricks you could try. I myself stick my left hand way up in that crack on the left and lock it off to clip (from the underside). I think Les has mentioned that sometimes he sticks his whole right arm in that big hole off the right side a bit and locks that in there to clip from. The first few times I led that I made an extra move up to the large flat ledge above the anchor and clipped from there. But then you have to deal with being an extra two feet above your last bolt and clipping the anchor at your waist... You'll get it yet!

Anyway, sorry gthornberg, I don't recognize you... But that doesn't mean anything. I do have one question for you though... WHY on earth would a climber purposely move to Florida??? Even from MN!?!?!?!? Well, you know one thing for sure... If you ever make it back here, you got RC.com friends to climb with! Feel free to contact any one of us if you're coming and want to climb... And if you're really jonesin' and want to take a road trip or flight, we're having the 2nd Annual RC.com Minnesota Gathering at the end of June here. You're certainly welcome to join us!

Ok, well, I will be at VE sometime later tonight. Unsure of what time, but I'll be there...

later

I'm in the southern Tampa Bay area. I live 2 miles from the gulf and love the ocean, but climbing is still my favorite thing to do. I hope to start a climbing gym in the area (maybe a great place for minnesota climbers to vacation, eh?).

I noticed that there is a gym 45 miles north of me doing well in Tampa, but none down where I am. My wife and I are talking about moving to Colorado or California in a year or two. Moving to Florida had more to do with finding employment since I was laid off in the technology industry in July of last year. There are a lot more jobs down here.

I'm looking to get out to Colorado by the end of this summer and would love to hook up with people.

NOT on PURpose!

You're in Sarasota??? Do you know my cousin? Angie Schnathman and her hubby Todd? She runs the restaurant at some Bobby Trent golf course down there... Well, probably not. But if I ever happen to get down there to visit them (not likely 'cus, I only do climbing vacations now-a-days), I'll be sure to stop into your future climbing gym...

Just out of curiosity, anyone seen any new bolt replacement activity out at the Bluff in the past few months? I haven't been there since... mid April. I know the hombres from the MCA were pretty active for the past two summers, and was wondering if they had started up again.

Funny you should mention this karma274... As Jeff said, we were just talking about this Saturday at the Bluff.

I've been out there at least once a week (except the first week in May) for quite a while and I have not seen anyone replacing any bolts, nor have I noticed any new bolts that weren't already there.

I know they are apparently planning to continue replacing bolts at Red Wing, but I don't know what their schedule is or what routes are on their list. I do have some suggestions for them. There are a few "moderates" that I'd lie to see at least new anchors on and some really need the bolts too.

Here's what's currently on their website...

Personally, I can see a couple erorrs in that list, but ok...

Anyway, I guess our best bet would be to contact them at the MCA Website...

You guys should totally shoot them an email. Josh and Brent are really friendly and approachable, and I'm sure they are open to suggestions. Also, if you aren't a member I would suggest becoming one. Bolts and drills and whatnot aren't exactly cheap. And it really is about time someone started rebolting out there. I remember going there two summers ago right after I started climbing and being scared shhitless by some of the anchors. (Some of the stuff out there still scares me. But at least there is less deadly hardware slowly rusting its way out of the bluff.

I have spent the past 8 weeks doing nothing but pullups on doorjams, so i should have the bare beginnings of finger strentgh. Will prob spend the day messing around on "goofed" or what ever else margaret and jill are capeable of doing. come join us.

ps just as a warning i will probally have the dog with me(storm 6 year old husky) so if you hate dogs, get used to it, this is a sporto crag with easy access. But Storm is a slut and if you come buy expect to have your crotch sniffed and ear scraching demanded.

You all missed out. It was a beautiful day at the bluff. Barely rained at all.

PS- Jake, I would recommend non ninja-camping at the bluff. It's sort of in the city and would be obvious when your vehicle is parked there all night. You could park it at the grocery store and then hike to the bluff and probably get away with it though, if you wanted to do that.

Lightboi- If you bring the dog I would strongly suggest keeping it leashed. I've seen numerous little kids who are out hiking with their family get the shite scared out of them by climbers' dogs that are just wandering around and come up for a friendly hello. The kids don't realize the dogs just want a pat on the head.

Well JOSH! Good to hear from you! I was starting to wonder if you were babying that foot... jk

Les and I will be at the bluff early. I know your day doesn't start til much later but we'll keep an eye out for you.

karma, lightboi's Storm has been to the crag many times before. She's pretty docile, just likes to leave a dump once in a while, which sucks when its in the bushes right next to where you're climbing... And Friday during the day, is not really family day at the bluff so I don't think we'll be seeing many children.

Anyway, Friday morning 0715 people... bet ya can't beat me there!

The ninja camping would most likely be away from the crag, off in the woods in the country somewhere. Being in the city is no fun. :?

Word to being in the city being no fun.

Duskerhu, yeah, I doubt there will be many people there. Just letting you know what I've seen. Personally, I don't really mind dogs at the bluff I just don't want it to become an issue with the people who are out there to hike around with the family and stuff. Most of the time the dogs are at least friendly, albeit not always that well behaved. (Not directed at Storm, lightboi. Never met her as far as I know.)

7:15 is effin early!

YO Bro! Yer gettin' too hung up on the effin (nah, I can't continue that sheet), fukcin' weather dude!

Hey, what's with the f-n-heimer anyway? :?

This morning at 0600, the weather liar here said it would start raining around 3pm and rain all night and most of tomorrow. Well, did it? Hell no! I thought for sure Kali's baseball game tonight would be rained out, but come game time at 1830, not a cloud in the sky.

Now, there are some clouds rolling in (I can see it on the SAT photos) but the system is pretty broken up in it. The storm doesn't seem to be forming up very well. So, we may get some showers but I don't think its gonna be an all day/night soaker... I got all my gear with me and I'm planning on going down right after work.

At 0500 I'll look at the radar and see what's about to hit Red Wing and make my determination then. But I got some bidness to do down there and until then I'm planning on going...

Les, did you bring those re-con biners with you tonight?

Karma you bring up a good point about dogs and crags. Storm is a husky, and all huskys MUST be leashed at all times. Saying that they tend to wander is an understatement. His comfort range from me off leash is about 300 yards.

On another note F*&% the rain

Yet another note I heard a rumor that the Red Wing PD picked up 2 kids for vandalizing cars in the lot. I hope that they are the same 2 bastard children that jacked my gear last year. So word to the wise treat red wing as the "big city" and leave your valuables hidden or at home.

Hopefully the rumor is true. Personally, I'm less worried about my truck being broken into than I am about the little fukcers who throw effin rocks off the top of the bluff onto people climbing. Hopefully one of them will fall of and splatter. Karma (the spiritual type) is a biatch!

Hope you all have a dry day of climbing tomorrow. And a dry weekend for that matter.

Hey Everyone,
I'm back from my trip to Korea [no climbing:( ] and want to get some climbing in this weekend. I will plan on being at red wing in the morning (in a few hours I guess, I'm still jet lagged and I'm wide awake right now at 2am) if the weather looks good when I awake. If not, anyone up for a quick climbing trip? I've got a couple days off of work (sun-tues) and was thinking of either devil's or the north shore.

About the weather today/this morning, its lookin' worse all the time. I'm sure we'll get rained out! *wink* *wink*

If you are up for the north shore Sung, there are a load of folks from VE going up there this morning for the weekend, kurt/Kurt included... I don't know who else is going for sure but I hear there's a bunch.

les, I'll get back to you on the coming weather...

I will be going up to Tettegouche tomorrow afternoon in hopes of hooking up with a crew who will be there all weekend. It looks like they will get rained out tomorrow, so I might just hit the good weather on Sunday. Although they may bail if it is too bad. I hope not.

Why do we get so hung up about the weather? We let it rule our lives. :?

Anyway, new week, and since I didn't get my fix this weekend (nor did Les), we're heading down to the Bluff this afternoon to get our Rock-On!

Les should be there at 3pm, and I'll be there shortly after that. Come on down if any of you wanna climb...

We ignored the lying weather man and had glorious weather up on the North Shore. It didn't start raining until the trip back, and Shovel Point was sunny and calm. I didn't get as much climbing in as I wanted to because I couldn't head out until Saturday afternoon, but it was still fun.

I finally got back to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies which was my very first climb ever. I did the 5.8+ variation this time. I wanted to go all the way out on the arete to the 5.10d variation, but I was spooked by the swing potential, or at least that is what I am telling everyone. That hanging boulder/mini van was sure spooky. I don't remember it being that loose looking. That thing is about to go any time.

We also got on Rise Over Run, and I know the rest of the crew did a bunch more, so maybe they will give more info.

The North Shore sure has a different feel to it from the rest of the State. It is more rugged and ominous. The thought of rapelling down and having the only way out be straight up adds a big psychological factor to even the easy climbs.

I almost forgot to mention, we also stopped at Betty's Pies on the way back. :)

Camp sites are $12 per night and if you call or reserve one via the website, there is an $8.50 reservation charge.

Go to the 2ed annual Minnesota gathering thread and find details, maybe someone to share a camp site with, a link to the state park reservations site, maybe someone to carpool with. Post up and let us all know you're coming...

Went to the bluff today (was a great day. cool and cloudy, but fun and lots of peeps out crankin.)

Anyways, I saw a group of what looked like inexperienced highschool or college kids toproping on a locking biner tied to a figure eight (bad idea obviously but probably not deadly) run through ONE of the top anchors on one of the 10's near Goofed on Skunkweed (high death probability) I said, "You aren't going to toprope through only one bolt, are you?" One of them said, "Yeah, you can do that." Jesus. I told them that if the bolt gave out they were DONE. Next time I saw them climbing they were using both top anchors. Close call.

I don't really know what we can do about stuff like this. I hate seeing grossly uninformed people out climbing and using horribly unsafe ways of doing things, but I've seen it a disturbing amount of times in the past 2 months. I guess just try to teach them the error of their ways.

I don't want anyone to get hurt, and/or get a climbing area closed because they were being stupid. I mean, shiit, I toprope through all the anchors and back that shizzle up with a draw or two on the bolts below. I can't imagine tr'ing through only one bolt.

Why, Why, Why?

Unfortunately, I tweaked my hip flexor pretty bad last week, and am going to be out of the game for a little while. I am still hoping to get to the MN gathering, but don't know how hard I'll be able to climb. They recommend 4-6 off for a strained hip flexor, but I am hoping to cut that time in half. I'll keep you posted. Enjoy the great weather this weekend. I'll be hanging out, wishin' I was climbing... :( :( :( :( :(

Anyone going to Taylors this weekend? I have only been outdoors a few times and all of those at Barn's Bluff, I would like to get out at Taylors. So if anyone is wanting or willing to go, I would love to tag along as my partner and I are not experienced or equipped enough to set a top rope. Anyone interested either pm me or email me at jreinan@attbi.com

dann,
I was thinking saturday around noon. How does that sound? The weather is supposed to be 80 and sunny!
WOW! You really got the college start going there Sung...
How 'bout a liiittttlle bit earlier, say, 10am???

I'm picking up an overtime shift Saturday night and I'd like to get home early enough to get a bite and a shower before I have to go in...

Ah, maddog, check yer PMs. I sent you directions and I'll call you in the AM; but its gonna be early...

Sorry jreinan, I personally hate TF on the weekends. That's why I don't get up there much. Come on down to RW and climb with us if you don't find anyone...

jreinan,
I didn't see your post till now so I'm sorry that I missed you on Saturday. I got a late email from Dann on friday night about his incident and that he wasn't going to be able to meet me the following morning so I slept in, and showed up at the barn in the afternoon looking to just meet up with some climbers. So I didn't mean to stand you up if I did.

I did get some climbing in with Chris (the other Korean guy, theres 2 of us!) and Dave. I led doctor rock, which I believe is my highest lead at the Barn so far. I did back off at the crux right below the anchor the first time, then got back on and decided that I just need to commit and do it before I go home.

Dann and Les, glad you guys are okay. And I just want to make sure because Chris and Dave thought the gathering is this coming weekend? Its the 27-29th isn't it?

Hey Sung,
Yes, we are both fine thanks...
And again, really sorry about Saturday! My arm is feeling much better now and I'm going to test it out a bit at VE tonight. Sorry if I messed up your day for you!!!

The Gathering at Blue Mounds is NOT this coming weekend...

It is the following weekend, June 26, 27, 28, & 29! (I added the 26th because Les and I and maybe a couple others are going early on Thursday).

Anyway, pass the word! I didn't realize Chris was thinking about going... And Dave too? Hopefully they can make it on our planned weekend!

See yall soon!

I swear old_school, one of these days you're actually going to show up at one of these deals and I'm gonna have a heart attack and fall over dead!

Dude, you gotta get yer priorities straight and just blow off all those "circumstances beyond your control" and just go climbing instead!

Hope to see ya there!

Anyway, back to the Cities... Anyone climbing this week/weekend? Les and I are going down to the Bluff Wednesday afternoon. Probably get there between 3 & 4pm. Maybe also Friday morning... And seeings I won't have my kids Saturday, I'd like to get out Saturday too. I'm not sure if Les is available but, if anyone else has plans that I can hop in on, let me know.

Also remember people, the 2nd Annual RC.com Minnesota Gathering is now *counting on fingers...* 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,,, 9 days out! Better get a list and start gathering yer stuff! 8)

Barns is a mad house after noon on Sat and Sun (at least until mid July) getting on a good route is near impossible. Thats also one of the reasons I font like to go oon Sat.

SHEEeesh kurt, you can't make it any earlier than 9:30? (which turns into 10... 30ish... ) I'll be passed out by then.

Alright, well, wake me up when you get there. I'll be the one passed out in his front seat...

In reply to:

Well, Friday mornings, we go right after we get off work (6am) and Saturdays we go and are done before the crowds show up... I may stick around and climb with you Saturday after Les leaves, depending on how worn out I am...

kurt, who or what is "ISenforcer" and "Bouldererererer"??? I'll try and give you a call later...

Who else is going Friday???

I hit up Barn Bluff this weekend with Karma and co., and we had a pretty good climb. It was beautiful on Saturday, with a little breeze, nice temps, and nice rock. We camped out, and then got rained off halfway up Sleeping Bat on Sunday, and that was no fun at all. A few drips, and then a deluge. Oh well. One good day outside is better than a week in the gym.

Is anyone climbing this Friday at Barn bluff?
Did it rain alot down there this weekend?
