Thanks you guys,
I had thought there was a conspiracy that only mods could delete their own posts. Then in light of your comments, I found the little X box next to reply and qoute. Cool, now I can delete duplicate posts.

Dingus, you know a lot about climbing but your an absolute authority on group dynamics in an internet setting. Thanks. (I wish I could repost your beta as it deserves a thread of it's own, but it would probably belong in community which is a place I try to avoid.)

hi dingus,

my theory in your situation is this:

assume after 15 posts the thread rolls over to the next page.

15 posts are made, and then person foo deletes his post. this would mean there are 14 visible posts and one martian. dingus posts next, and this means there are 16 posts including the martian. only 15 are visible, so the second page only has one invisible martian and the dingus pearl of wisdom is on the first page. the "review your post" button takes you to the last page of the thread, which is the page housing the martian, thereby causing you to curse and page back.

i think it is just coincidence that you happen to trigger this fairly often. most likely because a fair number of your posts are in heated threads where people delete their posts when they sober up. make sense?

Sure does bro. Butt...

I've learned not to take the trouble shooting theories too far without a peek at the code or a talk with the developer. A friend of my wife's has car problems. She came over the other night (sans car of course) and started with the 20 Questions:

Could it be tire pressure (sure)
Could it be out of alignment (oh yah)
Could it be a tire out of balance (yup)
Could it be a bad spark plug? (mmmm, maybe)
Could it be the air filter (always gotta love the clogged air filter theories! NO, it's not the air filter)
Gas filter? (mmmm, maybe)
Does it need water? (NO!)

Look Joann, this is all paper theory. Don't go replacing parts you think *just might* cause the problem. Why not bring the car over and let me take a look?

Turns out a piece of body cladding was flappin in the wind! Hehe.

That's what this problem is likely... a piece of code flappin in the wind!

Cheers,
DMT

What fun would those benign(sp?) reasons be ??? Conspiracey, censorship, and abuse of power are much more dramatic, and get more "number of views", especially when used in the title, which is important to some.

Personally I enjoy the intellectual give and take of a good debate. The topics you mentioned are guaranteed to generate polarized views and passionate arguments. Conspiracy? Nah. Poisoned my mind is, but not in that fashion. Next they'll be trotting out the Tri-Lateral Commission and the Rockerfellas ferchristsake! Tie it in to the Kennedys and we've got the Mother of all Conspiracy Theories! Yee hah!

Now where is the intellectual challenge in a poll on whether you back up you rappel rig or not?

Why are you looking for an intelectual challenge by TROLLing a rockclimbing site ??? Why not go to a site like rec.climbing if you want to do it at a climbing site ??? Unless you are out of your league there, and need to start easy. But then where is the challenge in that ???

Just so we're clear, I didn't mean to imply a conspiracy when I pointed out the missing post phenomenon. It's much more likely to be a coding glitch. I just thought someone with site maintenance responsibilities would want to know.

Now, at the risk of adding a little gas to what seems to be smouldering on its own, did Tim post his conclusions yet on the real deleted post? The last message from Tim made the unveiling of the truth sound imminent. Maybe I missed it?

Some say I am a skeptic because I believe in conspiracy theories. That is absolutely false,I am NOT a skeptic.

I truly believe that in every dark cloud, there is a silver lining(however, some silver lined clouds have trace amounts of mercury, which we all know can lead to the onslaught of nuro disorders).

Are you suggesting that some members of the site might be unstable? The nerve!

As for an update, I have posted what I found in the logfiles to the mods & eds forum. I fully expect this to go nuclear, and will probably killfile you all in short order. Neener neener, I can't hear you ;-)

Tim posted the logs, and looks like I was the idiot who accidentally deleted it.

My bad... I deleted, or at least meant to, a reply I made that I felt could be taken as incindiary, and I try not to add fule to the fires that seem to burn on occasion here. Apparently, I hit the wrong button. Odd, since the buttons are in different locations on the page, but the logs don't lie. :(

Obviously need to be more carefull, even though Tim has it set up to now undo this if it happens again in the future.

 The medication is out there, too. Might help the paranoia. No fall guy is involved in this one. I already volunteered, but they insisted on fairness and accuracy. Imagine that. The log entry show what it shows. Buy a dunce hat for Adam if you like, but there's absolutely no indication this was intentional. Thanks for owning it, Adam.

How exactly would a log entry indicating intention or lack of intention look? :? Do the logs actually have an attention attribute with entries like "unintentional action"? I don't think so.

Other than that I have nothing to add to this discussion. I do not care to speculate about why the thread got deleted as I find it rather uninteresting. The important thing is that measures have been taken to prevent it from happening again. The rest is history.

cool

I am left with two questions.

1. What was so objectionable in rich's original post that it needed to be edited? Also why wasn't he notified?

2. Why do mods get to delete their posts but users don't? Apparently two mod's did this in this particular thread and they seem to have done it by means of a tool not availible to general users. Curious as it used to be an option for users too.

2. That's just the way it's set up. Let me see if I can change whether users can delete their own posts.

1. You misread what rrradam wrote. He said he tried to delete one of his own posts. (I might be misunderstanding you here as I can't remember everything said in this thread. It's getting to be a rather long and tedious affair).

2. You can edit your own posts. That basically means you can delete it as you may remove the whole content. Isn't that enough?
