Quitting Climbing...for awhile...

Well after much debate, I think I'm going to take a break from serious climbing.

I recently had the revalation that I've spent every single weekend (except one) for the last 3 months climbing. Many of these weekends involved leaving on Friday afternoon, and coming home Sunday night or Monday morning. Helluva good time that's for sure.

Real life is starting to suffer though. My grades are mediocre at best, I'm so broke that it's unbelievable. And I've been on 3, count them, THREE dates in the last 3 months. Totally Unacceptable.

This weekend, I'm going to a Sorority Formal on Friday, the mall on Saturday, and Sunday is open.

(twitch twitch...pretend the lameness isin't real)

God, that's some of the lamest stuff ever, but I've got to expand my horizons a little. I've forgotten what it's like to drink while not smelling campfire smoke, and I haven't been to a party in 3 months when the music wasn't supplied by me or one of my friends with a guitar.

Urg...Return to the real world...I feel like I just got dropped off by the spaceship.

I quit for two years cold turkey. Think climbing had lost something and was no longer fun. When I came back I was so much better and focused. Sometimes a step back is good thing.

I understand grades suffering and having no money... but what's wrong with the climbing life? Why do you feel the need to lead a "normal" life with frat parties and going to the mall?
Break norms!!!

Believe me, I'm a norm breaking fiend. Too many cold night, and not enough climbing girls=serious issue! Hahaha.

I'm still going to climb, just not nearly as much. All weekend every weekend, and a couple trips to the gym durring the week is just a little too much. I need to get a life...

Imagine if my hobby was remote control cars or something else, and I was dedicating this much time to it. That wouldn't be healthy...I'm extrapolating a little and trying to view a climbing addiction from the outside. A little step back shouldn't hurt.

The first person to PM me asking for my gear is going to get an earfull though!!!

Hahaha

After a couple boring weekends in the real world, you'll change your mind. I've spent almost every weekend climbing/road tripping for so long, I was actually here in LA on Sunday not climbing...first Sunday in town in AGES. I was so bored I didn't know what to do with myself. I went shopping...boring. Cooked dinner...it was okay but it woulda tasted better around a campfire. As for dates, are there no cute climber chicks out your way? If you've spent this long climbing, being stuck in town with some sorority chickie going to the mall is gonna be a MAJOR withdrawl for ya.

Whatever you do don't get hooked on some sorority chick this weekend. Made that mistake four years ago. Now everytime I want to hit the road:
A) I can't take her because sweating and sleeping in a tent or truck are unacceptable
B) You get asked questions like "You love rocks more than me don't you"

And when they tell you how much they love the outdoors and climbing, know that it is a lie. Better off meeting her at the crag, better yet The Valley, because then you know she can hang.

The next time you go to the Glass, do:
The Nose
Peregrine
Sundial Crack
Left Up
Bloody Crack
Gemini Cracks
Second Coming
Rat's Ass
Maybe even Zodiac, if you like a 30ft. runout slab off the ledge.
Stay off Tits and Beer, it's serious. When Jeep Gaskin and Pappy call something "N.C. sporty 5.8" avoid it until you get your "Glass feets".
You see Travis, maybe having bitchy old tempermental me along may not be as bad as you think.

you know the real solution to this is, of course, a female climbing partner to move into town who can help keep you on task so you get good grades, supply a nice sized rack (no pun of course  ) , and go and climb with you...ooo..one can only dream...

Not dating because you're spending all your time climbing is a bad move...

but not climbing because you're spending your weekends dating is even worse.

I've found that Tuesdays and Thursdays make great date nights. Why those two nights? I'm not really sure... but they work. Just work around climbing...

By the way, sorority functions are really lame, especially to someone who is used to spending weekends camping. I've dated, seriously and casually, sorority girls. The functions blow... but thats just me, and I'm a climber. ;-)

Looking Glass is a special enchanted place. Though I've epic-ed 2x there, it still calls me. Me and the Glass have a long history.

Pretty true. I admit, though, I was in a sorority for a year and a half. I got in because I told them I was into hanggliding that that was way interesting. Too bad none of them had any interesting hobbies as well. I dropped out when I tried to compile a list of interests for an ice breaker and they all had the same thing (the only thing different was order): shopping, hanging out with friends, going to the beach. I asked one girl why she didn't mention drumming: "Well, no one else did anything like that!"

Effin' sheep.

Anyway, good luck in re-entering the real world. My love life has also suffered because of climbing (more because guy climbing partners don't want to screw with a good thing, or my sentiments the same way), but the last few years have been the best of my life, changed my perceptions about a lot of things, and I would never give that up. Ever.

Question: What is that picture you have of the kitten running from the monsters? I think I saw that on a commercial but can't remember what it's about.

Can't stress the importance of getting good grades, it's something that you can't go back and easily do over.

Other than that, wait until you see the crap that goes on in the "real world"; look at how popular "reality" shows are. A ton of people in the "real world" actually sit on their couches every week and live their lives vicariously through people like you.

I'll take a campfire and acoustic guitar music any day over the crap that comes on TV and the plastic mass produced crap like Britney on the radio everyday. People in the "real world" give a crap that Britney kissed Madonna.

Oh yeah, have fun in the mall, thinking about rappelling down to the first floor or climbing on all the structures they have there. You will soon see that most of the stuff there is garbage. In fact, think about all the people who spend every weekend in the mall, is that any lamer than climbing?

I think not. The point is to do what makes you happy while making sure that what needs to get done gets done. If you want to go to the mall and hang with sorority sisters, that's cool, but do it because that is what you really want to do and not what you think other people expect you to do. Maybe you don't want to climb every weekend, I'm sure that you can balance it out so that you will have time for climbing as well as some downtime, which will make the climbing even more exciting when you go.

I wish you had come to this realization around 5pm on Saturday. It sure would have made my life a whole lot easier. We could've just rapped straight down, leaving gear (you no longer need) along the way. I know my wife would have liked that.

What's the deal w/ you committed traddies from K-ville, anyway. First Dmac, now you. Maybe it's all that time you spend at Cherokee Bluffs, on the Tennessee. The fumes from that river will ROT YOUR BRAIN.

Good God man!!! Get a hold of yourself. Bouldering is the place to be. A whole lot more chickies there than out doing trad.

Then again, it's always about that last climb. Are you a hero or a zero?

I'm in college too...and its hard to manage climbing and grades. You just have to plan, I mean grades should be most important. I work hard in school during the week so I can take my weekends for climbing or other outdoor activities. This week has been an easy week though, I will have climbed 4 out of 7 days this week. Haha. A total break from climbing might not be the answer, but slowing down might be. Don't go every weekend, don't take 3 day weekends. If you spread your climbing out it might be worth more to you, i.e. you will be looking forward to that weekend two weeks from such and such date when you can kick back and climb

But as far as the dating thing. Man if you are like me you don't want a chic thats not going to spend time in the outdoors with you, so don't waste your time at the frat parties. I have actually found several girls who I have asked to tag along with me and my climbing partner as a ice breaker first "date" Then everything went from there. I think alot of girls actually do like climbing but you can't find one who just wants to be social @ parties and stuff and not hit the outdoors.

And I think that if you have spent every weekend in the last 3 months climbing and in the outdoors it is because you choose to and like it, not that someone is making you.

So take your depart from climbing....the real world sucks...let us know when you get back.

Woah nelly, people get MAD when you threaten to leave, the folks who I've never ever even talked to before are the worst!

Anyway, It's more a matter of moderation than anything. I don't think a bunch of you realize how much time I'm dedicating to pulling on rocks. I'd be willing to wager, I was up there in the 99th percentile in how much time climbers spend climbing.

When it starts getting difficult to have a conversation about something besides climbing, well, it's time to diversify a little. I ain't quitting altogether, as posts here have assumed: just stepping it back a bit.

Rest assured, even in my temporary semi-retirement, I'll still be climbing more than bumblie (hahahahaha).

I'm actually kind of excited about staying in town this weekend. I wonder what it's like in the city on the weekends?

I don't know who these guys are who think grades in college are important. They're not. Sure, you don't want to fail classes, but no one except dorks care about your GPA 1 year after you graduate. People are interested in interesting stories about epics and ass-clenching fear!

Learn the material, ignore the grades.

I agree with this unless you're in certain fields. I just graduated in May and my grades mattered BIG-TIME.
Travis, I understand where you're coming from. My last year of school, I climbed 4 days a week in the gym (Mon-Fri) while working my butt off in class, just so that I would have my weekends free for whatever. I ended up taking a few months off this year once my gym closed. Now that I'm back, I'm better than ever, I have a better outlook than ever, and am even more addicted to the sport.
The down side? You're going to get bored quickly and you'll spend WAY too much time here on this site. :)
See ya around.

Damn... I wish I could climb enough to start to feel like taking a break. I've got neither time, access, or weather for any good climbing at the moment. This real world thing is driving me nuts.

Why do you feel the need to lead a "normal" life with frat parties and going to the mall?
Break norms!!!

I assure you, frat parties and going to the mall are part of a climber's lifestyle. It is totally acceptable to spend a few days here and there hanging out with the sorority chicks...

However Travis, what it sounds like you need is to take the winter off. It is going to be pretty cold anyway... spend the weekdays in the gym. spend your weekends at the sorority house.

Come back this spring.

Gatlinburgh...

Just came back from there a couple of weeks ago... they have a new thing in town now that you, redneck boy, will enjoy. "Couter's in the Smokies!!!". That's right, you heard me... Couter off the Dukes of Hazard has his own garage in the smokies. It is more of a museum. The great thing is that when I was down, I got to meet Enos and shake hands. We hung out for awhile and talked. I found out he is coming to Evansville in a week or so and we are going out for dinner!!! Ha Ha, I kick ass.

Anyhow, check out "Hogg's and Hunnies" (the original name of "Coyote Ugly"), the Dacari bar if you have chicks, "Crawdaddies", and everybody knows "Blain's". I don't care too much for Pucker's though... too small. I think that is where all the locals hang out.

I have to agree on the dont quite.... Travis you taught me everythig I know about climbing... Your like my mentor in climbing... I wouldnt know what to do without ya!! You took me on real rock for the first time ever... You were always there to push me (along with Simon, Addie, Christoph and Toni) and give me faith in myself... Some of the most fun I've ever had climbing/camping has been with you... All my friends back home get so tired of me talking about Travis ( this awesome climber).. And now I jsut dont what to do!! LOL I sound pathetic... but you really mean alot to all of us, and if you take a break from climbing, make sure its just a break!! hopefully a short one! And who cares if the only time you drink is sitting arounda campfire playing your guitar entertaining yourself( along with everyone around you)... Those are seriously some of my best memories... dude, I love ya man!!

Do you have anything black? That's what everyone else is wearing, and it is after labor day and all...

But black makes me look pudgy, mabey I should wear vertical stripes, bu those make my butt look too small....What should I do with my hair? You should see, I got the CUTEST shoes to wear! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!

Travis

PS-As for ALL THE PM's asking for my gear....HA! I'll beat you with my #4 Camalot! (there have been 7 PM's, granted, I think only one was serious ;) )

Travis, sweetie, black is slimming on everyone. Good luck with your new "normal" life. Whatever that is. You're not going to do yourself any favors by getting involved with a girl who's going to pout when you do climb or come along to spend time with you and end up making the trip miserable because she got mud on her fashion tennis shoes on the approach.

But what do I know? Three dates in the last three months sounds like a great record to me.

By the way, is anyone else tired of all the whining about there not being many girls who climb?

Dr. Piton quits climbing every November, sits around his computer all winter telling other people how to do it, then steps off the couch at the base of El Cap sometime in May, and climbs it [after finding someone else to carry his gear to the base].

However, this being said,

your comments are some of the lamest-ass words I have ever seen you write!

I think I'm going to puke.

I predict your "retirement" will last no more than a few weekends. And if it does, you really are a lame-ass. Have fun at the mall, dude.

Damn, a brutha can't take a few weeks off without everyone guilt tripping him. I MUST graduate school!! Must must must, and soon. If I don't do it now, I'll never do it.

AND,

I MUST go out on more dates. I like dating, I like girls, they make me happy. They smell good, and look pretty. I miss them!

I really like climbing too, but I've taken it to an extreme so much that it is starting to hurt other areas of my life. It's kind of like a big old juicy chocloate cake: That damn thing tastes really good. So good that you eat it all the time, you spend all your free time making cakes, and eating them. You learn how to make different kinds of chocloate cakes, and eat them just as fast as you make them. You dump your significant other because they are cutting into your cake eating time, and are criticizing you about how it's ruining your relationship.

You eat ten chocloate cakes a week, and you're happy as a clam.

But then you notice that you are starting to get fat. You don't feel that good because all you have been eating is sugar. You haven't been able to get a date because you are so fat, and spend so much time eating and baking.

"Well," you think, "I guess it's time for a little diet."

Ease up on me, I just gotta take a little break to get my life back in order. Rest assured, in a month or so I'll be right back to climbing your projects in my flip flops.

And Angela, I never complained about there being a lack of female climbers. Sure, males vastly outnumber females at the crag, but one of my best partners ever was a girl. Climbing with her beat the hell out of seeing some gruff bastard like Bumblie when you are approaching a belay station. Rock climbing (the kind I do anyway) isn't a very good venue for meeting women however, so I went to a sorority dance, and met gobs of girls, in ONE night!

I guess it just comes down to needing some balance in life. If you dedicate all of your time to one thing, to the point of other areas of your life suffering, you'll never be really happy. I was climbing 5 days a week for a long time, and logging in 2 or 3 full days on the rock every weekend. I put 40K miles on my car last year, and the only girl crazy enough to date me, I dumped for other reasons.

I think it's time for a little break. Get school and my social life back in order. It's the best thing for me to do right now. Hell, I'll probably still climb more than 90% of y'all even if I just go once a week. (hahaha, sucks for y'all!)

PS, Thanks for calling me "Sweeite" calliope, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside--even IF the rest of your post was pretty harsh...haha.

Here's what I'm trying to do. Foster a healthy social life, and a successful professional one. Climbing 5 days a week, hardly ever dating, and hardly ever studying because you are completely obsessed with your hobby is not the way to do that.

Of course I wouldn't expect you to know how to have a healty social life or a successful professionaly life, so I'll just chalk up your "Lameass" comments to ignorance of what having those things requires.

On the other hand, the grocery store is open 24 hours. I need cake like I need a hole in the head. I'm too fat and don't date.

Maybe I'll take up climbing.

I didn't go to the mall, this makes about 2 years since I've been in one....well, there was that one time when I had to go in to get some Fugi Velvia from the photo store, but that dosen't count.

That dance thing was kind of fun. Drunken haze, so it seemed rather enjoyable. The funniest thing was that they loaded us all on a bus to drive us 4 blocks to a hotel. They didn't want anyone driving drunk, so they wouldn't tell the girls where it was. HAHAHAHA!

Three and a half bucks for a beer was rather ludacris though. Hell at Triple crown, the bar is open. Now THAT is southrnSTYLE.

Travis... as long as its a short break, I dont think it will kill me... but please make sure its a just a short one... I know how you feel about distributing your time... I dance 4 days a week, tutor 2 days a week, have clubs after school almost every day.... still have to study ( I know its different in college) but I still manage to climb 4-5 times a week... There are a bunch of girls who lcimb, and I think finding a girl who climbs would be perfect, so then you could spend your "girl"time doing the thing I know you love more than most stuff! Well I'm going to Lilly today... I have to admit Simon and I are going by ourselves, and are really hoping "someone"will be there since we dont know the beta on all the climbs, and Simon has only lead a few routes out there!! I lvoe ya Travis! Peace

Good luck with the big change.

Don't use too much climbing lingo and metaphors in your conversations or all the chicks will think you're from another planet.

You could try to impress them by telling them about the time you fell on that ledge and couldn't decide if it was an onsight or a redpoint, but you'd have to explain to them what these words mean first.

You could try to impress them by telling them about the time you fell on that ledge and couldn't decide if it was an onsight or a redpoint, but you'd have to explain to them what these words mean first.

(*don't tell anyone, but that whole thread was a big troll...shhhhh...*)

And Melissa, I'm with you. I was really considering driving up to The obed this morning, but I ended up going out for a little while *LATE* (like so late it was early) and I just now woke up. Don't sweat it though, i'm sure I'll be back out there dirtbagging every weekned just like before soon enough.

"I think it's time for a little break. Get school and my social life back in order. It's the best thing for me to do right now.....Or I could study for my math final to try and make a B in that class.

To graduate from university with a B average is the sign of a misspent youth. Dr. Piton is proud that he graduated with an absolute bare-bones C minus average, thus proving arithmeticallly that he did no more schoolwork than was absolutely necessary.

Not one person in the Real World After Graduation will ever ask you what your marks were because nobody cares - what is relevant is only that you graduate.

I walked to the front of Convocation Hall dead last in my class [however the diplomas were handed out alphabetically, but had they been handed out according to class standing, most likely I would have been dead last, too. I certainly hope so.]

What I remember from my university days is miles and miles and miles of cave passage discovered, explored and surveyed in West Virginia, Kentucky, Mexico, and Belize, and hundreds of first ascents across Ontario. That, and grovelling before a few profs to beg them to squeak me by.

STFU studs!!11

YOU DON'T KNOW ME!!!

Don't make me mention the fact that out of the blue, a cutie (with blue eyes ironically) called me up and asked me if I would go with her, therefore indirectly starting this chain of thought into play. An hour of dancing sandwiched between 9 hours of hard drinking, and hanging out with GOREGOUS young women seems like a perfectly respectable way to spend an evening. Pshaw. (my dress was WHITE anyway...HAR!)

Pete,
I gotcha, and believe me, I've gotten enough adventures past current and future to hold me over for a long time. Gotta take care of some things right now though.

The rock is calling.......damnit.....

Rock on! Ticks are for Kids is a cool line! Did you really lead RC? GOOD JOB if you did! That thing is kind of hard for what it is. Funky moves all the way up. I think the HP comp is in 2 weeks, that may be the next chance I get to climb. Y'all should try and make it down!

Travis' post makes me think about my own life . . . going back to school so I can devote more time to my life adventures . . . heh.

I deliberately stayed home this weekend so that I would do well on my upcoming projects. I am on this computer all the time now because it is right in front of me . . . and I could be climbing and actually getting pretty good at it.

Some of us do get a bit obsessed, don't we? I went to Bishop last weekend and was ready to shed all my constraints and just dirtbag again. But, maculated, that's not for you, you found that out!! But isn't it all a wonderful dream?

Two years ago I was thinking about how much I wanted to finally settle down and get stablility in my life, comfort, all of that. Settle for a nice guy, pop out some kids and start the next chapter of my life.

Now i suddenly realize that at this point, that's not right for me. If I am so dangerously close to sloughing off my responsibilities in the name of FUN, who am I to be popping out kids? I could be sitting at a desk job and making gobs of money because I am so skilled, but I am back at school trying to get A's so some good college will pay me to get a PhD and I'll spend the rest of my life enjoying flexibility and 4 month vacations. All so I can climb and stuff.

God, that is so irresponsible. Kudos to the TennDawg for recognizing this affliction and possibly abating it.

"Utopia" comes from the latin for: There is no place.

I just read an article in R&I that JL wrote. It's the current R&I. It was about never being comfortable in your own skin, about how you always, always desire that which you do not have at the moment. And it was also about how the only person that you can really sync up with...is yourself. You just have to accept who you are.

I was touched. Nice story John, it fits so well into this whole situation I'm currently. Perhaps not verbatum, but close enough for me to extrapolate.

Y'all should ALL read it.

Maculated,
I've always thought that climbers were incredibly self absorbed and selfish. It is just the nature of the game we love to play. People climb because there is no one to blame except themselves for their failures. Because it allows you to truely FIND yourself, even if just for a moment. We are selfish.

I was about 2 days away from dirtbagging it. I widthdrew from school for a semester, got a job, got the money, quit the job, then went to see my parents.

They understood, and gave me their blessing, then asked me to make my choice, to start up that car and drive, or to finish what I started at school.

For some reason, I came back. Even now I don't know why. But the least I can do, is take it serious while I'm here. Finish this, put it behind me, and set some framework for the rest of my life. Mabey fall in love along the way?

Well, that's not the hard part, the hard part is making it work, god knows I've been in love. But this is not the place to discuss this...

Anyway, thanks JL for a great story, it gave me some perspective, and in a way reminded me a little of what I already knew about life.

It was Proud.

Travis

Been workin. I've got a math final coming up that's gonna roast me if I'm not careful, and I'm teaching myself to code PHP so I can get a little business idea going. I was close to having the site online, but I just scrapped it, and am starting over from scratch. (boo)

God, it was goregous today though wasn't it?

By the way, is anyone else tired of all the whining about there not being many girls who climb?

Aye god, the sport is teeming with fit and attractive women these days! Back in the Iron Age when I started climbing we would all gawk in astonishment when a female appeared at the crags. Classy gents we were. On one of the rare occassions that we did see a woman approaching the rocks, my friend Greg pointed and shouted "Look! A girl!", whence we all craned our necks excitedly, causing her to flee the vicinity at a vigorous trot.

Climbers these days don't know how good they've got it!

OK, just don't take care of them too well, and if you get a B in math instead of a C, and missed any climbing time to achieve it, I will be sorely saddened.

Heed the call, Young Bull. Throw those books under the bed and head for the crag.

P.S. Any knickers under that bed as a result of last night?

Dude finish school. don't be a 6 year senior like me that had to retake freshman classes so his GPA would be OK enough to get into his department, but had alot of playtime by neglecting his studies. oh and put the PHP down man... you're page was good enough without it, and if you learn it before i do, i'll be saddened... Sides if you take enough time off, i might get up OPP before you do :P
