I think it's because we respect the environment we are in when we are climbing, so we are calmed and relaxed, and pass this onto the relations we have with other people.

Sure climbers are nice most of the time, it's like skiing use to be way back before the corprate world took over. I hope climbing does not have the same fate. I find it hard to believe all the responses are so sugar coated. Have any of you ever heard the expression: the only thing wrong with climbing is there are so many climbers doing it. Not everybody thinks climbers are a joy to be around.

Addiroids, You're talking about me aren't you? BTW, the natural state of all humans is to be jerky to each other in order to posses the things that will make us happy. The only difference between climbers and simular experience seeking people with the rest of humanity is that we realize that our experience is directly affected by how we treat others and a jerky attatude is counter productive to what we seek. In other words, most of us act like jerks in the rat race to pay bills but at the crag we chill out to experience the climb and the enjoyment that comes with it. Being a jerk dosn't usually fit into the definition of being chilled out.

I went Climbing today. And while registering at the park office, I saw these three other climbers there. Since there was only 4 places to climb we ended up right beside them. THey were on a Top rope route I wanted to try so I said, "hey, can I hook up on your rope?" and they were like, "sure buddy" I guess its kinda how if you in the middle of china and you see another american, or whatever you are, you have to talk to them. Its true. We are the nicest people on the planet.

For the most part climbers are nice, but as a few mentioned, there are some jerks. Even if their words arent bad their actions may be. I've had some guys try and beat us to a route, we were parked first and we talked about what our plans were, we were headed to the sam route. They grabbed thier packs and ran off ahead of us, then when they got on the climb they were so slow, we went else where instead of waiting for them, this was on Fairview Dome in Tuolumne. I think this made them jerks for skunking us and then being so slow. If they would have been fast it would not have been a problem. Also some people are not nice, I often find that when we come up to a crag and others are there, its like we are crashing their party. They are not helpful or freindly, even if we try and make freinds with them.

Radistrad, Whats so jerky about those situations you mentioned? Dose everyone have to bend over backwards to be nice to everyone else all the time? I consider people to be nice if all they do is acknowledge I exist with a nod. Call me a jaded Nevadan, but I've been stranded in the middle of the desert on a dirt road to nowhere with no possiblity of surviving and been passed by city people in luxuray SUVs (CA plates) without even raising an eye brow. Its a good thing Jesus loves me, because very few other seem to give a dam. I said it before and I'll say it again, the natural state of all people is to be a jerk. BTW, I always pick up the near dead.

jaded Nevadan, I think I live in the jerk capitol of the world, the S.F. Bay Area. I could be broken down and my own mother would pass on by. I mentioned why I thought the guys were jerks that snaked on us. When climbers act like they own the whole damn rock, I cant stand it, maybe I'm the jerk. But the parks are for everyone. I like it when I have the crag to my self, but if some one comes on by, I am always freindly and upfront with them. I let them know our plans for the routes we want to climb so we wont have conflicts or we can work it out if we are gunning for the same route. I hope to be treated the same, but you are right, we should feel good just to be noticed.

"When climbers act like they own the whole damn rock, I cant stand it, maybe I'm the jerk. But the parks are for everyone." Amen to that, I might also add that I'm not a big fan of climbers with a superior attatude. I'll gladdly bow to superior skills and talent, but attatude, never.

I agree wholeheartedly with both rad and crap! Most climbers are pretty cool-but I have met some at public areas such as parks, etc. that think they own the rock and that just ticks me off something fierce. Just look at some of the snotty attitudes that go flying around this site! People just need to chill out and realize that "IT'S ALL CLIMBING BRUTHA!"(to borrow rrradam's phrase). I basically suck as a climber, 5.9 on a good day, and I have been called every name in the books by people because they don't think I should even be DISCUSSING climbing if I can't climb 5.12 or something. Sorry for being negative on a forum that was supposed to be positive but I just had to vent.

Personally, I am ashamed to admit this, but the real reason I'm in a nice mood when I climb is because I usually can't remember if I'm wearing underwear or not. The sad part is that most of my climbing cloths have holes in them, and it really sucks to belay me.

theres def something that we all have in common. just last night i was driving down the pass from some evening climbing (first rock of the season here high in the mountains) and the county cop pulled me over for doing 50 in a 35 zone. he took my lisence, reg, insurance and returned to his car. when he came back, he made a comment on my high performance sports car (jeep wrangler) then asked about the climbing...10 minutes later, i got off with just a warning, and he had his beta on the lack of snow on the rock. i was stoked. climbers are definitely nocer than the average joe

i guess are nice especially to each other cos we a re family! we are a group of atheletes doing a rare sport which intergrates trust (blaying), and helping each other for e.g setting anchors, routes etc. for each other. The issues of climbers being darned nice has been in my head for some time already, i am glad that someone finally voiced it out... CLIMBERS rule! we are family!

Where i come from, most climbers are VERY nice, but there are some occasional jerks. Like this one time at a popular climbing site, to where me and my friend just made a first visit. Upon an arrival we came across a nasty cave and there was a climber and his belayer in front of it. And i say to my frien "check the grades on that one", althougn i knew, i couldnt climb .14. And so the other climbers goes "I dont think there is anything in there for the likes of you". And when i asked some normal climbers about him I found out he couldnt clim it either . What a LAMER. But generally people are really cool, they help you out, even rescue your gear, even if they ARE among the best ones in your country.

my 2 cents For years I have known that climbers are among the best of people (Thanks to you all!)- and I would like to add to the list of reasons why we are compatible. LEARNING. In my quest to get better and be safer, i have struck conversations with most anyone I see at the rock, to see if I can learn something. In fact (with fear of sounding too obvious) everything I have learned about climbing I learned from climbers! Climb on! B www.climbersfestival.org

I know why climbers are so nice. It's beucase we are born with an extra part of the brain that makes us climbers and nice at the same time.

We are nice cos we do things that not MANY people wanna do, or simply think its crazy and scary to do. I guess its because of this that we are different. Different in the sense that we do and think differently. We also see things differently. We climbers ARE special. One more thing, climber are a very small group of people in the sports arena. Thus i think we feel like a family, cos in time anyone will know everyone.
