While no one technically should be climbing in the Quarry, right now the community urges that all climbers respect the no tresspassing rules for a while. The reason is that negotiations are being made with the owner to obtain the Quarry and any "incidents" could derail this process. Please just give it a month or two and the Quarry can be open forever!

I am not going to say who in this forum because I haven't spoken with them directly. I just wanted to pass along this individual's request that climbing be postponed for a while. They will not be climbing at the Quarry either.

In reply to: I am not going to say who in this forum because I haven't spoken with them directly. I just wanted to pass along this individual's request that climbing be postponed for a while. They will not be climbing at the Quarry either. Sigh. I hope that this is true that they're working to secure access and not just playing some sort of 'Let's tell everyone to stop climbing there so we have it all to ourselves' game. Even so, keep us updated on the process. K.

No, it is not a game as far as I know. The individual is a trustworthy member of the local community. I'll be sure to let everyone know what happens.

As far as I know, none of the people who know about the access situation (the locals, etc.) at Bellefonte are currently climbing there. I don't know if there are any non-local climbers who are using the area now, and if there are, I don't know if they have run into any trouble. I am fairly certain that attention on the place has cooled off since the (non-climbing) death there last year. Immediately after that incident, I understand that there was a big police presence around the quarry and climbers were having problems with the local authorities. The bottom line is that you could probably get away with climbing there now if you kept a super-low profile and knew where to go. However, the local community is still staying away and discouraging anyone from going there because an effort was being made to secure public access to the quarry with the help of the Access Fund until the accident last year. I believe that local climbers intend to resume working on legitimate access, but I don't know if they have begun yet. If you decide to try to climb there, remember that you could be further jeopardizing future access.

Thanks a lot for posting that website. I can't believe that I didn't already know about it...I've been out of the area for a little while and a little out of touch, but I will be returning next year and am very concerned about access at Bellefonte and other areas. I hope that other people are as well, and I hope that we get a lot of support from anyone who is able to give it. Here is the website again linked: http://www.c3pa.org I will post it elsewhere on the site too, because If I didn't know about it, then I'm sure a lot of other people don't.

Bowers told me people are getting $400 tickets for trespassing. So I would avoid it. But I do not know this first hand.

Climbing at Bellefonte remains illegal (As of March 2010). It is up to individuals whether or not to obey the rights of the property owners, and to deal with the resultant consequences of their actions (fines, etc). Remember that trespassing gives all climbers a bad name. However, it must be stated that it will never be legal, that all efforts to open the quarry have either failed or been imaginary. Anyone suggesting you not climb there in order to not jeopardize such efforts is either lying to you, whether knowingly or not. Some simply want the quarry for themselves while others may indeed believe such fairy tales.
